Big Papi David Ortiz throws a one hit gem!

Today I felt like messing around and having some fun with the game. Unfortunately what I stumbled across was not what I was hoping to see.

I played a game with Boston (myself controlling) at Cubs (CPU controlling.) The settings were default veteran with default sliders and default rosters. My goal was to put Big Pappi on the mount to see what would happen.

Prior to the start of the game I put Papi on the bench with Beckett as the starting pitcher. Then, when it was Beckett's turn to bat I replaced him with Ortiz as the pinch hitter. After the inning is over Ortiz will then be on the mound unless you make a change in the bullpen. Away we go and I wonder how fast it will take for the big man to get rocked & knocked.

Instead, he pitched an absolute gem - 6 innings pitched and 1 hit! I used the pitching meter and my approach was realistic - to nibble outside of batters hot zones and throw strikes in cold zones. There were 2 pitches available to me - a fastball and changeup. The fastball generally ranged from 77-80MPH. Towards the end of the game I remember his fastball topped out around 78 but his changeup was 83 with full power.

I lost the game on purpose 2-1. Why? Because I've heard in some threads that if you are behind the CPU lets you catch up and if the CPU is behind the comeback logic kicks in and it will play catch up (and yes comeback option was set to off.) Keeping the score close with the CPU in the lead let me see if this theory held up. I'll let others share their thoughts on this but something is funny - at least in veteran mode.

In addition, my stamina was empty and I don't remember if I ever even had stamina. My confidence bar started around 70% and the deeper it got in the game the higher it got and eventually topped out and stayed there. The green bar (not sure what it's for) started full and gradually went to empty after around 4 innings pitched. Below are screen shots and a video for anyone that doesn't beleive this.

Also, if anyone thinks they gave him some juice because Big Papi is a stud that is not the case. I also tried this with the Angels tiny Maciel Izturis pitching and his changeup is one nasty pitch. The results were similiar - 2 innings pitched, one hit, no runs, 1 strike-out and several swings & misses.

Hmmmm... that's really weird.

This wouldn't effect my game all that much because I won't ever keep a batter in to pitch unless it's a Dave McCarty extra inning situation and I have to... but those are few and far between and that's odd.

I guess online this could be a prob if David Ortiz can pitch as well as Josh Beckett.

A games default level should ideally offer the most realistic challenge with true ratings in effect. If veteran level in the Show is equivalent to rookie mode with watered down ratings then what level equals the most realistic challenge?
