Do i just need an ethernet cable to get this update?

I'm not the most technologically adept person, but can you run an ethernet cord between a slim PS2 and laptop that is connected wirelessly to the internet then downloaded these rosters directly?

You should be able to. I did it with an XBOX360. Something about Bridging the connections!
