Help! Most of my passes (especially online) are weak lobs no matter what

I have so much trouble, especially when playing online, to put any velocity on the ball. When I have steps on defenders in man, or when I have a throwing window into a zone and I try to hit a pass in stride, the ball is just kind of weak armed and slightly lobbed, giving the DB all the time in the world to close on the ball. This is the case even when holding the button down for a bullet pass.

Now, I primarily play with QBs like Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Fitzpatrick, but I can't for the life of me figure this out. I've tried in practice mode, and so many LS + button pressure combinations, to all areas of the field, still result in lobbed passes that are far too easily picked or batted down.

I feel like this might be an effect of the trajectories, but what do I do if I'm consistently getting trajectories that are just plain wrong for the situation?
