Defending the pass?

I'm confuse on what I should use when playing the ball in the air.

I play as s, no switching, and in the past I had 2 options.

Y/triangle = go for the pick
R1/rb = swat the ball

Now the Y/triangle is play ball. I assume is still trying to intercep. But my problem is to swat the ball.

I know x/a is play the receiver. But I don't want to let the receiver catch the ball if I have good position to deflect the pass. So what I should use?

R1/rb is still showing on the controls. No mention on the tutorial At all. And to make thing worst. On the tutorials it explain I should use swuare/x to deflect the ball.

I tried in the practice and it seems all give some kind of reaction but again. To make thing even worst. Sometimes it does it automatically so I don't really know the answer.

Those who play S. Or lb without switching. What method works?

Re: Defending the pass?

Take this with a grain of salt as I might be completely wrong.

I've read on other forums that holding square on PS4 is swatting the ball. So in other words you'll hold square right after the QB passes the ball similar to what you would do with triangle (play ball) and cross (play receiver) to swat the ball.

I'm definitely going to try this tonight.

Re: Defending the pass?

I play strictly CB and also play regular online games.

RB and X is to swat. I still use RB though because it's what I am used to.

Y is to intercept the ball.

A is to play the receiver. Now, I honestly never use it because I don't fully get it yet. It seems like I am basically conceding the catch but just making sure I make the tackle?

You do concede the catch as far as I'm aware of. But you would basically just use this when the catch is made before the first down markers are reached. So if it's 3rd and 10, and the receiver makes a catch 5 yards before the first down markers, it's just safer to play the receiver, make the tackle and ensure a 4th down...instead of going for the swat, int and missing and giving up the 1st down.

I use square on the PS4. Its hard to break the ballhawk habit, though.

Re: Defending the pass?

X/A buttons are to play the receiver, but you also punch the ball and try and rip it from the receivers hands ..

I use X the most and have caused many incompletes .. but press it too early and expect an interference call ..

Re: Defending the pass?

The play the receiver option is good as long as you time it right like someone said above. You are backing breaking up the play by hitting the receiver at the time the ball arrives. So if the other team is doing an aggressive catch if you use play the receiver you are most likely going to knock the ball loose or bat it up on the air. I find many times if I play the receiver and they are doing anything other than a possession type catch I can break it up as long as I time it right.

Re: Defending the pass?

I think it’s partially know who you are defending when the ball is in the air, if it’s a 2nd, or 3rd receiver I may challenge them for the ball, if it’s a receiver of the Calvin Johnson caliber I’m likely going to use the play the ball feature given the difference in how it works vs last year.

I think the defender you switch to is important also does he have good jump, and size to match the receiver…I have always been a ‘Y’ button kinda guy going for the pick. This year though they put in thos punch out animations and with another defender there is still the possibility for an interception.

In simpler terms, I use ‘X’ to play the receiver (where I saw the punch out), and ‘Y’ to play the ball (IMO tip or intercept) that’s my experience with the new options this year.
