Writing History in the South(Predators Be A GM NHL 10)

I am going to be doing a Be a GM of the Nashville Predators.

Settings:
Skill Level: Superstar
Period Length: 9 Min
Game Style: OBG's Slider Set

I'm not going to have a fancy write-up with Newspaper articles and everything. I am going to post each game and then have a game recap. Every 10 games I will put out a summary of the entire NHL(League Leaders, Standing, Injuries,etc..). As well as the game recap I will post any transactions that took place on that day.

Draft Preview

The Nashville Predators will be looking to get back to the playoffs after missing them last year for the first time in the last 4 years. Several players are being marketed off in an attempt to get younger and clear some cap space in case a big name player is available as a free agent.

Trade Block:
Dan Hamhuis
Jason Arnott
David Legwand

The NHL Entry Draft will be a interesting day for the Nashville Predators. Players could be moved and big shake ups in the opening night roster could happen.

As of now the lines for the Predators are

The Draft is only a few hours away. I will have another update logging Nashville's moves at the draft and all the transactions that occur during the draft and the following months up until opening night in October.

Draft Recap

Well after talk of several big name players being traded at the Draft. Nashville made one move and it was just a swap of a veteran for a younger AHL player.

To NSH: (RW) Brain McGrattan
To CGY: (C) Dave Scrathard, 4th Round Pick

All of the big name players mentioned in the previous update all stayed put in Nashville for the moment. Several offers were made for Arnott and Hamhuis, but none of them helped the Predators in a way their GM was looking to either reduce cap or get them to the playoffs.

Nashville only had 4 draft picks to work with once they made their one and only trade. Here are the 2009 Nashville Predator Draft Picks:

1st Round: William Allen (LW)
2nd Round: Edwin Woywitka (C)
3rd Round: Rodney Garlock (D)
5th Round: Janne Edlund (G)

It is unknown if the Preds are going to attempt and sign all 4 draft picks, but we assure you that at Allen and Woywitka are the main focus for the management.

Trades Around the NHL:

To Van: Marty Turco (G), Toby Peterson (C)
To Dal: Christian Erhoff (D), Pavol Demitra (RW)

To Pit: Cory Sarich (D), Brett Palin (D), Steve Staios (D)
To Cgy: Sergei Gonchar (D), Mark Eaton (D), 3rd Round Pick

To Min: Barrett Jackman (D)
To Stl: Marek Zidlicky (D)

To Van: Jere Lehitnen (RW)
To Dal: Sami Salo (D)

Opening Night is Here

Well after a slow off-season for the Nashville Predators they will start their 2009 season in Dallas. There were some minor tweaks to the roster after the draft adding several players that were skilled enough to play in NHL right away. So the lines for tonight opener are as followed.

Nashville Predators - 2009 Depth Chart
Starter2nd3rd4th5th
LWSteve SullivanWilliam AllenJoel WardJordin Tootoo
CJason ArnottDavid LegwandMarcel GocJerred Smithson
RWJean-Pierre DumontMartin EratPatric HornqvistWade Belak
DEF 1Ryan SuterDenis GrebeshkovKevin Klein
DEF 2Shea WeberDan HamhuisFrancis Bouillon
GPekka RinneDan Ellis

Kevin Klein is the lineup to start the year, but with the drafting of Rodney Garlock look for Klein to be on a short leash before Garlock is called up to take Klein's spot. William Allen will be making his NHL debut tonight. He was the first round pick of Nashville in the draft. He is a playmaker at heart so look for him to play very well with Legwand and Erat. Pekka Rinne has earned the starting spot in net for the Preds. It was close battle and a tough decision but Rinne will give the Preds the best chance to win games. Ellis is going to be the backup but there have also been talks of Ellis being dealt to help the offense. Only time will tell.

Preds Can't Solve Lehtonen

The Nashville Predators travel to Dallas, Texas to take on the new look Dallas Stars. Both teams are lacking in the defensive aspect of the game, but Nashville was the first to show it. Loui Eriksson scored the first goal of the game midway through the first on a one-timer from Mike Ribeiro. Eriksson was left wide open to the left of Rinne. Rinne had no chance at the shot. 1-0 Dallas. Dallas would continue to pepper Rinne throughout the first, but Rinne stood tall. After the first it was still 1-0 Dallas.

In the second Dallas came out strong once again and skated all over the Preds. The Predators didn't register a shot in the period until the 7 minute mark. Their first shot came after Mike Modano tallied his first goal of the 2009 campaign. Once again a Star forward was alone in the slot. Another defensive laspe, another one-timer, and another goal. It was now 2-0 and the Preds had shown no will to try and battle back before the goal. Allowing that 2nd goal seemed to wake the Preds up because they were able to net a goal of their own just a minute later as Sullivan took a beautiful pass from Dumont and he buried until Lehtonen's glove to make it a 2-1 game. The Preds had new life until the 12:32 mark. When once again Eriksson would be open in the slot. He took a pass from Steve Ott and he deked Suter out of his skates and walked in on Rinne and beat him 5-Hole. 3-1 Stars was the score going into the 3rd.

The Predators were in trouble early as Dan Hamhuis took an interference penalty in front of his own net putting the Stars on an early 3rd period powerplay. Pavol Demitra was able to capitalize on the PP and sneak one past Rinne just over his blocker making it 4-1 Stars. The Preds tried everything they could to beat Lehtonen, but he was on his game in this one. The Preds seemed to have hope at the 7:11 mark when the ref put his arm up for a delayed penalty against the Stars, but as they were setting the play up in the zone with the extra man Sullivan tripped Ott and cancelled out the powerplay for Nashville and instead caused a 4 on 4 for the next 2 minutes. Both teams would have chances in the rest of the period but in the end it was the Stars that walked away with a 4-1 win on the shoulders of Lehtonen's 16 saves and Eriksson's 2 goals.

William Allen Scores His First NHL Goal

Allen and Rinne Lead Predators Past Avalanche
The Predators hosted the Colorado Avalanche for their Home Opener this season. Both teams came out hot putting lots of shots on net. Dumont was able bury an easy tap in after a beautiful play in the zone by Hamhuis and Sullivan found Dumont on the goal mount wide open. He tucked in behind Anderson to give the Preds a 1-0 lead only 3 minutes into the game. After a calm 14 minutes of back and forth neutral zone play the Avalanche were able to get set up in the offensive zone and work the puck to Stephane Yelle who was then able to find an open Haydar on the weak side and he beat Rinne to tie the game at 1. After the first period it was a tie at 1.

In the 2nd period Rinne really shined. As the Preds would put the Avalanche on several powerplays in the period. Rinne would make 12 saves over the course of the 2nd. Since the Preds spent most of the 2nd in their own zone killing off penalties they were only able to muster 5 shots for the period. No one was able to get anything even close to beating Rinne. After 2 with was still 1-1.

At the start of the 3rd the Preds came out flying all over the place but were unable to beat Anderson. They fired 6 shots on him in the first 4 minutes, but then Legwand took another penalty to put the Preds back on the Kill. William Allen the Preds 1st Round Pick this year was out there on the PK and he was able to steal the puck from Haydar on the left boards. Instead of clearing the puck he had room so he skated it into the Avalanche zone. He got to the top of the circle and ripped a slapshot over the shoulder of Anderson giving him his first NHL goal and the Preds the lead once again. He was later asked after the game how his first goal felt, "I love that I was get it this out of the way so it wouldn't hold me down later. But all and all I am just glad we're able to win the game." After that goal the Preds took over. They kept the puck down in the Avalanche zone for about 80% of the remaining game. Martin Erat was able to bury an empty netter for a 3-1 lead and the win for the Predators. Pekka Rinne was the first star of the game for good reasons. He stopped 28 out of the 29 shots that the Avalanche threw at him.
