Just caught up, pretty good. Bit of a disappointing season but it's going to happen. That's why there's always next year.

Thanks. Yeah, the season was disappointing for sure. Hopefully season 2 will be much kinder to me.

NHL Awards Show Marred by Brawl

Despite the fact that the NHL’s “Big 3” (Ovechkin, Malkin and Crosby) were pretty much shut out of the action (Ovechkin did win the Pearson Trophy), the NHL was enjoying one of it’s most successful awards ceremonies in recent history.

The champagne was flowing, the jokes were funny (it may have something to do with the fact that Ron MacLean wasn’t hosting) and everyone was having a good time, waiting for Marian Gaborik to accept his Hart Trophy so everyone could go home. Former Blackhawks Denis Savard and Steve Larmer were out to present the award (neither of whom ever won this trophy, but nobody seemed to care). Larmer announced that Dallas Star’s goalie Marty Turco was the winner of this year’s Hart Trophy. Silence. Marian Gaborik, who by now was half way down his aisle on the way toward the stage, stopped dead in his tracks and looked at Larmer, who was visibly uncomfortable. Larmer tried to recover with a quick joke to Savard, but when he looked next to him, Savard wasn’t there, he had disappeared backstage, leaving Larmer there to handle the situation himself.

Marty Turco made his way to the stage, people now starting with light congratulatory clapping, still sensing the tension, as Gaborik was still frozen in the same spot. Turco accepted the award from Larmer, who stood back from the podium. Turco started thanking everyone for the award, and congratulated Gaborik on a great season.

Suddenly, the lights went out, while the emergency lights came on, someone in the crowd yelled, “RUSH ‘IM!” People starting running towards the stage. Turco was stunned. Gary Bettman ran out onto the stage and screamed into the microphone for everyone to take their seats, while behind him, Larmer held Turco, while Savard, who had now returned, delivered punches to Turco’s stomach area. Bettman was then hit in the groin with a flying chair, and fell off the stage.

Gaborik hit the stage and dove onto Turco, while his “Slovak Pack” friends starting kicking Turco in the ribs. Miroslav Satan then got to the podium and yelled something incoherent into the microphone. Zdeno Chara let out a blood curdling yell, and then piledrived Alex Kovalev into the floor. It was madness. Teemu Selanne, who had won the Lady Byng earlier in the night, was seen curled up in the fetal position while clutching his award and crying. Gordie Howe was walking onto the stage trying to restore order when his elbow lightly grazed Sidney Crosby’s arm. Crosby fell to the floor like a tonne of bricks, clutching his face and rolling around like he had been shot. Howe looked down, obviously disgusted by the act, and got down on Crosby and started whaling on him for real until security hauled him off. While Howe was entangled with security, Crosby got up behind him and hit him in the nuts. The brawl would last for 45 minutes until the police and SWAT teams arrived.

Chelios Calls It a Career

DETROIT - Apparently Detroit's disappointing season, and major offseason uncertainty have led to Red Wing's defenseman Chris Chelios to hang up his skates.

Chelios played in only 39 games last season. He notched 2 assists in that time, and was -3 with 32 penalty minutes. He did appear in all four of Detroit's playoff games against the Dallas Stars.

The loss of Chelios, which was expected, leaves Detroit with an open spot on their defensive corps. Early front runners for the spot include Derek Meech and Logan Pyett of Grand Rapids, or perhaps a free agent acquistion or even a draft pick.

Aaron Downey of Grand Rapids of the AHL, also notified the Wings that he would retire as well.
