Notes:

LG James Carpenter returned from injury this week and will be starting next week.
HB Marlon Mack will be back for the game next week.
CB Morris Claiborne: We signed Claiborne to a 4 year/$23.7M contract extension.
We hold the longest current losing streak in the NFL at 6 games.

Scheme Changes:

I have decided to change my offensive playbook from the Oakland Raiders to the New York Jets. I am working on a custom playbook that I will debut during the next preseason or late this season.

On defense, I have played passively the last few weeks and my defense has gotten stagnant. Next week, we are going to rev up the pressure and see if we can’t get more out of our defense.

Next week, we host the Carolina Panthers (5-5).

Jets Can’t Hold on For Win

-East Rutherford, NJ- The Jets lost a close game to the Carolina Panthers, 21-16, to fall to a record of 1-10. The Jets were down by 1 point at halftime and took the lead of 16-14 on a Chandler Catanzaro field goal with 5:47 left in the fourth quarter. Carolina came back for a quick score with 3:38 left to take a 21-16 lead. The Jets moved down the field, but an inaccurate throw by Josh McCown with 1:56 led to an interception. The Panthers attempted a field goal but missed with 0:45 left in the game. With no timeouts, the Jets could not get into the endzone and ended their chances of getting win number 2 on the year.

Josh McCown threw 4 interceptions in the game and continued to have difficulty moving the offense in the passing game. The Jets offensive line allowed 3 sacks, while the Jets defense got to Cam Newton 6 times in the loss. Rookie Marlon Mack continued to play well subbing in for injured halfback Bilal Powell.

Left Guard James Carpenter returned to action today after missing 6 weeks with a foot fracture. He went out in the third quarter with a bruised sternum and was replaced by Jeff Adams. Carpenter was cleared to play next week.

“Our defense played well for us. We got to Cam Newton and disrupted the Panthers offense all game long. We couldn’t capitalize on the chances we had and when you can’t do that, you don’t win,” Coach Donaldson stated after the game.

With the Jets long out of playoff contention, they will be starting Bryce Petty at quarterback next week. Will the Jets take a closer look at him and see if he can be their quarterback of the future? Maybe. But, no one is convinced he is the answer.

Next week, the Jets host the Kansas City Chiefs (7-4).

Chiefs Too Much for Jets

-East Rutherford, NJ- Another week and another blowout loss for the Jets. The Jets lost 40-17 to the Kansas City Chiefs. In a game that got out of hand quickly, with the Chiefs holding a 30-7 lead at the half, the Jets did play better in the second half.

Turnovers plagued the Jets, as Bryce Petty threw 5 interceptions in his first game starting this season. It may have been first game jitters, but his throws were all over the field all game long. Three of his interceptions were from errant throws and two were from bad reads. It did not help the young quarterback that he was under pressure all game long from a tough Chiefs front seven that sacked Petty 5 times.

“Bryce is young and inexperienced. We know that. He, however, will be given the opportunity to play and see what he can bring this team,” Coach Pierre Donaldson commented after the game.

When asked about the Jets now holding the number 1 pick in the draft with 4 weeks left in the season and if they were going to dive so they would hold on to it to draft a quarterback, Coach Donaldson added, “We come in every week looking to win. The draft is 5 months away. We have given some thought about what our plans are come April, but we will not be commenting on those during the season.”

The Jets, now 1-11 on the season, head to Denver next week to take on the Broncos (5-7).

Re: Return of the Green: A New York Jets Dynasty

Late Season Update

The Jets are 1-11 with only 4 games left to go. Our goal over the next 4 weeks to get win at least 1 game, and use this time to evaluate players who may be on the team next year.

Injuries:

There are no injuries on the roster at the moment.

Contract Negotiations:

TE Austin Sefarian-Jenkins: Not interested in resigning
LG Jeff Adams: Not interested in resigning
RG Dakota Dozier: Not interested in resigning
C Wesley Johnson: Not interested in resigning

Three players on our offensive line had no interest in resigning with us. I was trying to keep at least 1 of the 3 for some offensive line depth.

K Chandler Catanzaro: We resigned him to a 3 year/$4.44M deal
C Jonotthan Harrison: He signed a 3 year/$7.29M extension

Team Leaders:

Passing: Josh McCown: 259-431, 18 TD, 34 INT, 62.4 passer rating
Rushing: Bilal Powell: 144 att, 584 yds, 1 TD, 1 Fumble
Receiving: Jordan Leggett: 57 rec, 526 yds, 0 TD
Defense: Darron Lee: 94 TKL, 20 TFL, 4.0 sacks, 1 INT; Jamal Adams: 81 TKL, 4 TFL, 1.0 sack, 4 INT
Blocking: Team allowed 44 sacks; Kelvin Beachum allowed 13 sacks

Scouting:

We focused some more on the offensive line and moved to the defensive side of the ball. We scouted for a potential 4-3 speed rusher to help us get pressure on the quarterback, linebacker depth, and for cornerbacks. The cornerback class this year, is very subpar. Most of the prospects true talent scout 2 to 4 rounds below their projected round.

Offensive Line:

LG Gabe Espinosa: 21 years old, 6’4”, 318 lbs, Wisconsin, zone blocker; Impact blocking B+, Run blocking B, Pass blocking C; Projected 6th, 6th round talent
LG Clayton Gay: 23 years old, 6;5”, 340 lbs, UCLA, run blocker; Impact blocking B+, Run blocking B, Pass blocking C+; Projected 6th round, 6th round talent
C Houston O’Connor: 23 years old, 6’2”, 300 lbs, Tennessee, balanced; Impact blocking B+, Run blocking B, Pass blocking B-; Projected 4th round, 4th round talent
C Malcolm Kuberski: 23 years old, 6’5”, 316 lbs, Florida State, run blocker; Impact blocking B, Run blocking B-, Pass blocking C+; Projected 5th round, 5th round talent
RG Roman Dickson: 21 years old, 6’4”, 315 lbs, Delaware State, zone blocker; Run blocking B+, Impact Blocking B-, Pass blocking C+; Projected 6th round, 6th round talent

My favorite out of this group is Houston O’Connor. He feels like a versatile player who can be anywhere on the interior of the offensive line.

Defensive End:

RE Lewis Wortham: 23 years old, 6’7”, 241 lbs, Connecticut, speed rusher; Hit power B, Tackle C+, Finesse C; Projected 6th round, 6th round talent

The 4-3 defensive ends in this class are not very solid across the board. I may be looking to free agency to find a situational speed rusher. I wish Wortham’s block shedding was better, but we will wait for the combine to see his speed and if it would be worth targeting a speed rusher in the draft.

Linebacker:

MLB Vincent Hackney: 23 years old, 6’0”, 252 lbs, Delaware, balanced; Tackle B+, Hit power B+, Block Shedding B; Projected 5th round, 5th round talent.

Even though we are going with Darron Lee for the time being, Hackney could have the makings of a solid 4-3 middle linebacker.

Cornerback:

Spencer Kempfert: 22 years old, 6’1”, 213 lbs, Georgia, zone cornerback; Zone coverage B+, Press C-, Tackle C-; Projected 4th round, 3rd round talent
Kalum Craver: 22 years old, 6’2”, 205 lbs, Boston College, zone cornerback; Zone coverage B, Press C, Man coverage C; Projected 6th round, 6th round talent
Martin Dunlap: 24 years old, 5’11”, 181 lbs, Nevada, man to man cornerback; Man coverage B+, Zone coverage B-, Press B-; Projected 7th round, 7th round talent

Other Notes:

Bryce Petty will continue to be our starter, with Christian Hackenberg now holding the backup spot. I waited longer than I said I would to move on from Josh McCown, but with the injuries to running backs, I wanted to wait for some better depth there before changing out quarterbacks.

James Carpenter was moved from right tackle to left tackle and will start the remainder of the season at left tackle. Left tackle Kelvin Beachum has been benched. I am doing this to assess Carpenter’s ability at left tackle.

Reserve left guard Jeff Adams has been promoted to starting left guard with the move of Carpenter to left tackle. Adams played well while Carpenter was injured and deserves a chance to earn a future spot on the offensive line.

Minimum play clock time changed to 16 seconds. With the season all but over, I am going to experiment with the increased minimum play clock setting.

I changed my offensive playbook to the Arizona Cardinals playbook.

Stay tuned for week 14 coverage.

Big Plays Hurt Jets

-Denver, CO- The mile-high air was too much for the Jets as they lose 38-23 to the Denver Broncos. In a game that Denver started out hot in, the Jets were playing from behind all afternoon.

Bryce Petty played poor in his second start this season, completing only 18-42 passes and throwing 5 interceptions. He was sacked 5 times on the day and under pressure from a tough Broncos front seven all afternoon, including 2 sacks by Von Miller. Petty was inaccurate all day, throwing errant pass after errant pass. Two of his interceptions were returned for touchdowns by the Broncos.

The Jets defense could not get any pressure on Broncos quarterback Paxton Lynch all afternoon, giving him plenty of time in the pocket to find his receivers.

“We need to get pressure on the quarterback to disrupt him. Giving a quarterback all day to pass will only lead to defeat,” coach Donaldson added.

Injuries did not help the Jets. Robby Anderson broke his left index finger and was out the rest of the afternoon. He will be able to play the rest of the season, but have a small cast on his hand. Sheldon Richardson and Leonard Williams both went out of the game in the second quarter, but thankfully, both critical big men have been cleared to play next week. Lastly, Morris Claiborne sustained some broken ribs and will be out the remainder of the season. He was placed on IR at game’s end.

After the game, the Jets signed CB Dee Milliner for the remainder of the season on a 1 year/$2.43M deal.

Next week, the Jets head to New Orleans to face the Saints (6-7).

Jets Victorious

-New Orleans, LA- The Jets finally tallied their second win of the year, in a 34-22 win over the Saints. The Jets held a 24-7 lead at the half and were able to hold on to the lead to come out with the victory. The Jets came out strong early, blocking a field goal attempt on the Saints opening drive. Marcus Williams blocked the attempt and Jamal Adams picked the ball up and ran 60 yards for the touchdown. The Jets never trailed in the game and were only tied once with the Saints, 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.

In the best team performance of the season, Bryce Petty completed 23 of his 27 pass attempts, throwing 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. The offensive line was able to hold the Saints front seven at bay, not allowing a sack of Petty all afternoon.

The defense led the way with a strong effort, sacking Saints quarterback Drew Brees 10 times in the victory. Muhammad Wilkerson led the way with 3.5 sacks.

“This was a team victory. Everyone played well. Offense, defense, and special teams all stepped up for us. The key now is to build upon this success,” coach Pierre Donaldson commented.

The Jets will look to take that success with them as they host the Los Angeles Chargers (9-5) next week at home.
