Bulldog Born, Bulldog Bred | A Fresno State Football Dynasty

INTRODUCTION

_____________________________________________

"I'm Bulldog Born, Bulldog Bred and
I'm going to be a Bulldog until the day I'm Dead."
- former Fresno State coach Jim Sweeney

Alright guys, I'm back with my Fresno State dynasty. I stopped my original thread due to some issues with in-game stats. I was also super bummed when the capture device I purchased didn't work like I wanted it to. I've been contemplating on restarting this dynasty for the better part of a month. Now that I'm sitting here watching the Alabama/LSU game, I figured its time to get things started.

A little history about myself. I was an old MMer from back in the day under the same username. I did a couple of dynasty reports, but never quite fully finished them the way I envisioned. After the site went down, I jumped to Utopia, VSN, and DSS for awhile. I couldn't afford a PS3 for the longest time so I cooled off on the dynasty reporting. I think at around the time NCAA 14 came out is when I was able to get a hold of a PS3. I mainly played offline dynasty just to pass the time.

Fast forward to July of this year, I found myself wanting to do a dynasty report again. I've been contemplating about it ever since and eventually hunkered down, came back to OS forum, and said I'm going to get this done.

The school I'll be rolling with is Fresno State. I picked Fresno State because it's my Alma mater and I feel like if I pick a team I really root for then I'll be more inclined to continue progressing through the season. I actually shy away from playing Fresno State in any of my other dynasties because I didn't want to cheese up the team, so this is actually new for me.

The goal as with many of the other dynasty reports is to have something we could look back on a few years down the road and remember the players and games that were played. We'll see how it goes. I hope you all enjoy!

2015 TEAM PREVIEW
_____________________________________________
LET'S MAKE IT FOUR STRAIGHT.. Last year's rocky (6-8) campaign took the Bulldogs to their third straight Mountain West championship game appearance. There is growing optimism that this year's team could very well end up there once again. If they plan on making a fourth straight appearance, they'll have to rely heavily on a run game led by senior Marteze Waller. Waller will be the primary offensive weapon for a squad that lost their only returning receiver, Aaron Peck to a foot injury in fall camp.

A TRUE FRESHMAN.. Along with a group of young receiving corps is a new signal caller in quarterback Chason Virgil. Virgil and sophomore Zack Greenlee had a fierce competition for the starting job. In the end, Virgil's playmaking ability and 'X' factor won the coaches over. The Texas native graduated from West Mesquite High School in December and enrolled at Fresno State in the spring semester. Big things are expected of Virgil as his skill set compliments this spread offense attack.

ALL EYES ON KYRIE.. On defense, linebacker Kyrie Wilson will be a name to watch. The vocal leader of the team, Wilson has started the last two seasons at middle linebacker. Another name to watch is pass rushing specialist Ejiro Ederaine. After a down year in sacks last year, Ederaine looks to end his Fresno State career with double digit sacks.

CHASON'S JOURNEY
_____________________________________________

How did a kid from Dallas, TX end up in Fresno, CA? They call it a grey shirt. It's a story that happens often in the world of college football recruiting.

"To be honest, I didn't know anything about Fresno State." Virgil said.

Chason Virgil, a highly touted dual threat quarterback committed to Mississippi State early in the recruiting process. Virgil had planned to enroll early to get a leg up in spring practices.

Unfortunately for Virgil, Mississippi State had other plans.

"Yeah, my high school coach told me they wanted to grey shirt me," Virgil said. "That wasn't part of the plan at all. It caught me off guard because I'm graduating in two weeks and then I get told I won't get a scholarship until next semester."

Grey shirting is the process in which a player can participate with the football team, but is not given a scholarship until the following year which would mean Chason and his family would have to pay for school during the spring semester.

Chason decommitted from Mississippi State, but because it was late in the recruiting season many schools did not have scholarships available. That's when Fresno State came calling.

"We had heard of this kid decommitting and I pulled up some game tape," Coach DeRuyter said. "I saw some things I liked and said why not, lets give the family a call and see where it goes."

After getting in touch with Chason, the Fresno State staff met with the Virgil family and invited them to a campus visit. Chason loved his visit and the following day informed the coaching staff that he planned on committing to the Bulldogs.

In the end, everything seems to have worked out for Chason as he becomes the first true freshman quarterback to start the season for Fresno State.

"Best decision I could have made," Virgil said. "I'm a Bulldog. Not a Mississippi State Bulldog. I'm a Fresno State Bulldog."

SCHEDULE PREVIEW
_____________________________________________

ANYBODY, ANYWHERE, ANYTIME.. The motto left by former Fresno State coach Pat Hill. The Bulldogs have been true to form in scheduling any team in the country. This year they travel to Oxford for a match up against a high octane Ole Miss team. They last met in 2011, when Ole Miss handed Fresno State their second straight loss in a home and home series (2010/2011). Let's hope third time is the charm to pull off the upset.

THE BOY-Z ARE BACK IN TOWN.. The last two Mountain West conference champions (FS 2012, 2013, BSU 2014) meet again in Fresno on September 21. This is always a game to mark on the schedule. The BOY-Z have always been a thorn in the Bulldogs side. Expect both teams to come out and leave it all on the field.

FREQUENT FLYER MILES.. Get ready to rack up those reward points as the Bulldogs are traveling to four different time zones this year. The away trip marked on every player's calendar is the trip to Hawaii. Who says you can't have some fun while on a business trip. Coach DeRuyter will definitely plan out a weekend agenda to keep the kids on track during this week.
