man...Monarch: Legacies of Monsters is such trash.
That's hyperbole, but it's just really disappointing how much of a nose dive this show has taken. Or maybe I'm just finally realizing that it was always more hype than substance.
Spoiler
Pacing is painful.
The characters suck. Every single one of them.
The story has more in common with a soap opera than anything to do with Godzilla and crew or even the backstory of the organization built to track monsters. It should be titled Monarch: Legacy of Infidelity.
Some of the movie tie-ins have been neat to see, and I honestly want to like this show and its characters. It's just not good.
Shaw - Leaving his post to go be with Keiko...This was one of those things where "x needs to happen so the movie can happen", and I get that. It doesn't make it any better of a plot point. The older version of him does have some redeeming qualities.
Keiko - Likeable enough, except for being the classic "don't worry that there are these gigantic monsters who could devastate civilization. Military bad mmkay"
Bill Randa - He exists.
Honestly, the 3 flashback characters are not terrible. At least there is an attempt to tell a cohesive story with them.
Let's get to the modern crew though
Tim - He acts like this good guy who really wants to help people, but he was acting like a mobster in his first interaction with Cate. How much easier would it have been to explain things rather than grabbing her arm and dragging her away and then kidnapping her. Like what did you think would happen?
Monarch Director Girl - Whatever her name is, I don't care. You would think that you would have to be pretty smart and competent to get to be 2nd in charge of a secret government organization. Nothing about her character would lead you to believe that she has any form of competency though.
Duvall - Reminds me of Captain Phasma from the new Star Wars trilogy. A character who does stuff without any exposition or building of her character.
Then there is the main crew...
Cate - Thank god that Anna Sawai is pretty because that is the only thing that her character is bringing to the show, at least in terms of positives because the character has plenty to not like. That isn't a knock on her acting, the character is just poorly written. You felt for her early on when her world came crashing down with her dad dying and the flashback to G-day and then finding out her dad had a whole other family. Her character made a lot of sense early on. But then it shows that I guess cheating runs in the family because she was hooking up with some girl in one of the flashbacks (maybe she was mad at her dad for being too much like herself?), and now there is this cringy instance romance between her and her half-brother's ex girlfriend (who 5 minutes prior admitted to selling them out, but while bonds can be formed instantaneously they apparently can not be broken that quickly). Not to mention how she is constantly causing and over reacting.
Kintaro - His character is like an ekg. His moods and actions bounce up and down to such extremes that there just isn't any consistency. One minute he's taking out his anger on Cate (reasonable to need an outlet after finding out your dad has another family), to trying to prove to her that the dad was a good man, to being the hero, to jumping to conclusions of his own on their dad.
Maye - Insufferable. The resident genius who can do anything with a computer. Ok fair, not uncommon to have that in something like this. But then she sells out the Randa kids (bit of a jerk move but selfish characters exist and also not uncommon for a character), but then she doesn't even follow through with it. For some reason she just abandons that selfishness out of nowhere, offering herself up in some kind of self sacrifice to help the Randa kids. Ok...why? What was the catalyst for her moving on from wanting to free herself? It seems to be her feelings for Cate, which as I mentioned earlier, nothing the show has presented gives any indication that these two would be that way. I guess the writers did realize that putting her right back into the position of spy (for AET) would have been ridiculous thankfully.
Bit of a rant here. Maybe it's because Godzilla Minus One showed a masterful job of how to tell a monster story while primarily featuring the human element, and that movie was so recently released and is a baseline for comparison. Regardless, I'm not at all upset about my apple+ sub ending in a couple of days and not being able to finish out the last 3 episodes now though.
Ooooooof
And here I am 2 episodes left....and it was entertaining lol.
Agree about Godzilla Minus One brilliant and top 3 Godzilla film of all time.
