Re: Question to our European Hockey Fans

Swedish Hockey League's (SHL) trophy is the Le Mat trophy.
American film director Raoul Le Mat (who basically is the father of hockey in Sweden), got a sponsor in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer who arranged for the trophy.

It's swedens oldest sport trophy, actually as old as the the Stanley Cup (introduced 1926).

Close, but the Stanley Cup was first awarded in 1893

You both are correct. The first Stanley Cup was awarded in 1893, the first time the Stanley Cup was awarded to the NHL champion was 1927. From 1893 to 1914 it was awarded to the winner of the Challenge Cup which consisted of the best teams from the various amateur leagues in Canada. From 1915-1926 it was awarded to the winner of a game/games between the champion of the various pro leagues (NHA, PCHA, NHL, WCHL and WHL). By 1927 the NHL was the only league left standing and they claimed the Stanley Cup as their own.

Yup, I just noticed this when reading into it.
I found "my" info when looking up the Le Mat trophy.

But yes, the actual Stanley Cup is in fact much older! I stand corrected.

Still so awesome that hockey has two trophies with such history behind them....this is one thing that makes me love hockey.
