NHL 14...how do I make the game less realistic?

I know, totally weird title here, and the opposite of what most people are trying to achieve. Basically, my son is getting old enough to start liking NHL games, so I pulled out the last one I still owned, NHL 2k5 and played it on the xbox 360 with him...he loved it. So much so, that we played a season and have gotten through 20 games so far. However, in order to try and get him up to current NHL rosters, I decided to buy NHL 14 for the 360 for him and I to play. Long story short, he doesn't like it, not fun. I think it's because there's no speed burst (at least I couldn't find one) and it moves at a lot slower pace (i.e. more realistic). Is there any way to make it more of a fun game for a kid? I played like 4 games with him but he said he'd rather play NHL 2k5 than NHL 14 (which is mind blowing to me, since NHL 2k5 looks terrible relative to NHL 14...but it's the gameplay that he wants). I tried the NHL 94 throwback mode but that doesn't play like NHL 94 at all, lol...I don't even understand why it's even there.

Suggestions? I actually like NHL 14 personally other than the lack of speed burst thing, it feels weird always moving at the same speed as I definitely didn't do that when I played hockey. I don't think I've played an NHL game in 6 years, so I'm little behind the times here.

L3 is the hustle button. Turn Speed and Acceleration up to max and see if he liked that.

Why not just play 2K5 with him? He'll want to move on soon enough. Enjoy the fun with him now while you can. He's got a long time to get up to speed on current players/teams. You'll blink and he'll be in college.

Just turn everything down to rookie. Using "position lock" should help also because then he doesn't have to remember to toggle between players.

I play with my 8-year-old and he kicks my azz all around the room. I used to spot him a goal or two before actually trying, but now I am struggling to compete.

I always told him that hockey was way more difficult than Madden or FIFA. For some reason, he is way better at NHL than football or soccer.
