How do you Play NHL?

With so many different game modes and things to do in NHL 12, one can't possibly play them all. One of the best things about this game for me is that there are so many different ways to play and enjoy it. For me, I like to play Be a GM, but I sim the regular seasons. Playing just the playoffs allows me to get deep into my franchise while still feeling connected to the players I have. It also makes it challenging as a general manager to rebuild a team until they are good enough to make a serious cup run. I'll usually play with a team until I get fired (usually after the second contract runs out).

There is so much more to this game than Be a GM, but playing this way is what I get the most from and is the most enjoyable to me. So how do you play NHL? I'm interested to hear how other people play the game and what parts of it they find to be the most fun.

Re: How do you Play NHL?

HUT = Not my cup of tea.

EASHL = Too many non team players and I don't really have the time to devote anyways.

BAP = Poor Teammate AI and just poor logic overall ruins this mode.

BAGM = It's Ok, but every game plays and feels the same. It never feels like I'm playing against a different team on their home ice. A bit more depth would be nice as well, but come NHL 13 this will probably be the mode I play.

Play Now/Exhibition = What I play If I'm not doing a GM.

HUT is a great game mode if you know what you're doing EASHL great if you're playing with friends as well the game isn't bad it just takes time to learn I had to get used to the mechanics as well

I'm one of those weird coach-mode guys. I always thought it would be an interesting addition to a hockey game, but I never thought I'd see it implemented because there are so few of us. I'm very excited to hear more about playing as coach in this game.

I usually play online vs. when I'm flying solo. My most played mode overall is playoff mode though.

Two of my friends and I get together frequently to play and have developed what we call the Douglas Cup(stupid made up inside joke name). We drafted 15 teams on paper and then created the teams. The teams go into a Stanley Cup playoff format, single elimination, wih the 16th team being an AHL squad that is put in as a spoiler/bye for the top ranked team. Teams get attribute points to add to players on their team based on how many wins they have in any given tournament with 1 point awarded for a first rd. win, 2 for a second rd. win and so on. Points are distributed before the next tourney begins, with seeds being done by order of finish, adjusted to make sure you don't play your own team in the first round.

Trades are allowed between tournaments, as are free agent moves.

This has kept the game fresh for us and made it pretty competitive all-around. I actually have banners printed for the winner of each tourney(8.5 x 11).

This has also reminded me that I have entirely too much free time on my hands, but I would be lying if I said it wasn't fun.
