Optimum "player type" line combinations?

Just playing through NHL10 "Be a GM".
* Despite any kinks...AWESOME by the way

I'd love to hear some thoughts about which "player type" combinations you try to put together on your teams line combinations?

I've checked out a few of the top "cpu teams" lines to see what they do and have tried to adapt that to my own thoughts. And, at the same time, mind the salary caps ability to let me do what I plan of course.

Examples:
PLY - PWR - SNP (in some combination, usually 1st/2nd lines)

GRN - GRN - TGH (4th line, maybe even 3rd too if my top six make a boatload)

GRN - PLY - GRN (maybe another 3rd line combo)

* When and how do you best use a DNG?
* Are there other options that you've seen work?

Actual "players" aside, just curious what "type" combinations work nicely together?

Re: Optimum "player type" line combinations?

When I used to play Be a GM with the Wings (Before I forgot to copy my save files to a usb drive when I got an Xbox 360 slim ) I liked to roll with this line-up:

Franzen (SNP) - Datsyuk (DNG) - Holmstrom (PWF)
Bertuzzi (PWF) - Zetterberg (PWF) - Cleary (PWF)
Helm (GRN) - Filppula (DNG) - Miller (GRN)

My first line was a scoring line, my second line was a hitting/defensive line, and my third line was a grinding/speed line. For your fourth line, I recommend a tough guy with a few up and coming young players. Hope this helps!

Re: Optimum "player type" line combinations?

Huge help and great input TON1C.
Just signed a free agent DNG for my second-six forwards and hope he pays off. And I appreciate the input on the use of 3 PWF's.

Picked up NHL10 several weeks ago and I'm trying to digest it as quickly as I can, anticipating NHL11.

Second attempt at BEAGM, after I worked through what the heck I was doing in the first attempt for only a couple of years.

I chose Florida as the project. I got close in the first 3-year contract and then won 3 Cups in the second 5-year contract (EASY mode). I have since signed a new (and I dream, very lucrative) 3-year deal after being wined and dined by the Blue Jackets. In year two (2018-19 season) I took them to first overall in the NHL and lost out to T Bay 4-1 in the final.

In year three I again was first overall, but left in the first round of the playoffs in seven games.

Despite that, they offered a new five-year contract and, not wanting to leave things hanging, took it. I secretly am playing until I'm offered the GM role with the Leafs (close to home) - or may start a new BEAGM on a harder difficulty (if that makes a difference when you're just simming/not playing games).

Next season 2020-21, just completed and wrestling tooth and nail with my cap prior to the start of the past two years, I have won my CBJ Stanley Cup.

Despite any shortcomings (and there are certainly some glitches), I am lovin' it!!!

Thanks for asking........

Re: Optimum "player type" line combinations?

Most combos work pretty well, imo. I think what's more important is to always know what player type a guy is and play that style accordingly. Dangle with danglers, snipe with snipers, charge the net with power forwards, grind with grinders, etc.

Once you get really accustomed to playing this way, and in turn really get to know your team and its pieces, coming up with quality line combos will be second nature.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit I really haven't paid very much attention to the makeup of my lines. I wouldn't be surprised if that's apart of my problems.

Re: Optimum "player type" line combinations?

the combination doesn't matter that much, as long as you understand what to do with each guy, if that makes sense

I've always been a big fan of having lines with different personalities

line 1 is usually my talent line. I'll have a PLY center, a PWF, and a SNP

line 2 is almost always my big speed, big shot line, and it'll have a GRN for centerman, and 2 SNP on the wing

line 3 is my hustle line

I'll usually try to have a mix of PWF and GRN on this line
