Question NHL 10 - CPU v CPU, worries ahead of release

I know this is premature but I get concerned as I'm a cpu v cpu 'player'. The last EA NHL game I bought was devoid of penalties and fighting when watching a cpu v cpu game. This was a couple of years ago.

With the introduction of the new first person fighting engine I'm concerned that this will be the case again this year...how will this work for cpu v cpu, does it work for cpu v cpu?

I'd be really grateful if anyone from EA that reads this, or indeed if Steve from OS (with his beta copy) could possibly check this out please. Maybe put on a cpu v cpu game and crank the penalties & fighting slider up and see what happens.

I appreciate that I'm in the minority when it comes to cpu v cpu gameplay but that's how I and quite a few others enjoy the game.

If anyone could check this out I'd be very grateful.

If this works then NHL 10 is looking good from a cpu v cpu perspective, especially with the addition of the multi team season, allowing us to choose any game to watch...fingers crossed penalties and fighting is ok.

I'm not trying to be a jerk but what's the point of buying the game just so you can watch the computer play??? Enlighten me....

You'll be able to tune it to get penalties to happen often enough (Rules/Penalties, Gameplay/AI/CPU Penalties, Gameplay/Checking/CPU Aggression sliders all maxed out).

Not sure about fights, I think they would be rare at best in a CPU/CPU game.

Maybe in NHL 11 we can see more CPU fights. Sucks being the only person in Be A Pro fighting.

Thanks Redshirt, appreciate your time to respond. Hopefully we can tweak this to our liking for this mode and sort the penalties, which from what you say look encouraging. I hear you about the fighting, guess we'll have to wait and see. I've just tried this with NHL 08 and the penalities and fights were there for cpu v cpu, given the new fighting engine this may be tricky but I guess time will tell. In 2k9 penalties and fighting were there, so it may come down again to who does this best, EA or 2K from a cpu v cpu point of view.

TIm - everyone plays the game in their own way. Some of us aren't that good at playing the game (me included), must be my age. Personally I like the players ratings to have a say rather than me controlling the outcome, a little bit like real life where you just watch tv and have no controlling influence. I play all my games likes this, Madden, NCAA, The Show, NBA 2k etc

It can also come down to time, some don't have the time to sit and play but would rather put a cpu v cpu game on in the background while jobbing around the house for example. I've been a cpu v cpu'er for a number of years, going back to the pc version, megadrive and early PS1.

The game will get played in the 'normal' manner as my son will play it. It's a case of each to their own really, we all get enjoyment from different facets of the game, and in my case I like it to be as realistic as possible in cpu/cpu mode.

That's actually pretty neat!! Like I said, I wasn't trying to be a jerk.. I just haven't heard of that before.. However, Might be something to consider when I start a franchise or something.. Thanks!!

Yup, the AI vs. AI games have plenty of penalties when cranked up. I'm just not allowed to show modified sliders at all, during gameplay videos. Per NDA.

Steve - thanks for the info about the penalties, hopefully there are some fights thrown in there as well! I've just got a bad feeling about the fighting given the new first person engine, like how will the cpu handle it against the cpu, if at all? If not then hopefully it's something EA can tweak in a patch, if possible.

Tim - No probs, glad I enlightened you a little about it. I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea, and we each play the game in our own. My way is that with the addition of the multi player season I can now be my own tv director and pick any game from any side's schedule and watch it play out as cpu v cpu, with no influence from me.
