Ground Pass vs. Through Ball

What is the difference between these two?

I understand the difference in real life ... a ground pass is usually at a PLAYER and a through ball is usually at OPEN SPACE (and then the player should run into that open space to gather the ball).

But is there really any difference in the FIFA10 gameplay?

I am using full manual for both "pass" and "through ball".

I found that, in FIFA09, it was difficult to make a short pass - so I mostly used through balls for short distances and regular passes for medium to long distances. But that does not seem to be the case in FIFA10.

Any thoughts on how I can better take advantage of the different types of passes? Ground passes / lobs / through balls / lobbed through balls.

Thanks!

I haven't played much with manual ground passing (I use semi), but I have made it a point to incorporate more lob passes into my game (on manual). They've been quite effective for me as a substitute for long ground passes up the pitch, for example, from the LB to LM/LW or up to a striker. Sneak a peak at the radar to make sure the intended recipient has a little space, as the goal is to bring the ball down, not a 50/50 header.

Also, switching flanks and long diagonal aerial passes can be quite effective against teams playing a narrow defence. I've found that assisted lob passing can really limit your range on the diagonal ones since they're aimed at a player. If I can get a video of one next time I play, I'll post it. In the meantime, since I'm bored, here's a crude little diagram of each scenario:

To answer the original question, there is a difference. Even if it's on assisted, a through pass kicks it further ahead than the player's natural stride would carry him. The longer you charge it, the further ahead it is kicked, but on a less severe angle, so that he has time to catch up with it. Same thing with lobbed throughs. I use Assist on most of the passes, but the poster above is right about lobs for long direct passes b/c you can usually get more ooopmf on them.

Re: Ground Pass vs. Through Ball

I mix and match them depending on the situation. I notice that the through ball can get a bit messed up on manual (I play on full manual). For instance, if I'm trying to send a long through ball to a player that's near me making a run, the game will sometimes interpret that as a through ball to the next furthest player and my intended target will lay off. So instead, I use either a lob over the top or a long pass in front of my intended target that he can run on to.

Other than those instances, I think the two can be interchanged quite often on full manual.

one critical diffference is the ratings between the two. ground passes are from short pass/long pass. where as through balls have to do with VISION.

Re: Ground Pass vs. Through Ball

In order to get a different feel from each of the differing passes, I've switched up my control settings. Ground passes are stuff full manual, but through balls are on assisted, lobs and crosses on semi. I really think that the press of the triangle button (regardless of assistance level) sends a different message to your AI players so they'll keep moving forward and run on to the ball rather than stop and wait for it. That's been my experience.

I feel like, on all manual, through balls are more weighted. So, if your in the box and you have a guy go on a run to get behind the defenders you'll want to use through pass because you don't have much space
