Re: what conference?

I think it depends more on the location of your school, not what conference you're in. I've played in the MAC as Central Michigan and gone to the Big Ten, and gotten an invite to the Big East as Buffalo.

Pick a school that fits in geographically to get an invite, or just use the custom conferences.

Re: what conference?

From the Sun Belt, FAU and FIU can go ACC. Problem is, they can also go SEC. I've seen Memphis in older versions go ACC/SEC but never Big East . I did a long sim once with Pittsburgh who was invited to the ACC to replace Duke which seemed kind of oddball and I turned it down. Wanted a Big 10 invite, never got it .

Big East is much easier. You have a better chance of building a top program, in the ACC you become a small fish in a big pond. Just look at Miami.

Re: what conference?

FIU, FAU, UCF - ACC, Big East, or SEC definitely
ECU - ACC definitely, Big East or SEC probably
Marshall - Big East definitely, ACC or SEC...maybe, maybe not
Navy - ACC definitely, Big East also highly likely
Army, Buffalo - Big East definitely, ACC also highly likely
Temple - Big East & Big Ten definitely, ACC maybe

There may be some others, but those I'm quite confident about.

Re: what conference?

excuse the dumb question, i've held off playing dynasty till the ltp came out:

can you customize conferences before every single season? or only at the beginning of your dynasty mode?

Only at the beginning of your dynasty. However, teams in non-BCS conferences can get invited to better conferences throughout the course of playing.

This doesn't always mean invited to a BCS conference. An independent could be invited to a conference of any level depending on the school prestige and location. A Sun Belt team could potentially be invited to C-USA before SEC/ACC/Big East/Big 12.
