NCAA Football 10: Likeness in Video Games Disputed

The Detroit Free Press has posted an article on NCAA football players Likeness in Video Games Disputed.

Quote:
"he issue of video game developers using athletes' likenesses prompted lawsuits from former professional and collegiate players who say such companies are profiting at their expense.

On Friday, the NFL Players Association announced it had settled a lawsuit with a group of retired players -- led by former Michigan State star Herb Adderley -- who claimed the union had breached licensing and marketing terms for use of their images in video games and other sports products.

And last month, former Arizona State and Nebraska quarterback Sam Keller sued the NCAA and EA Sports for using images based on players -- although jersey names aren't used -- but not allowing players to profit."

If the NCAA is confident nothing wrong has occurred, then EA shouldn't be too far behind. Hopefully this also means the TeamBuilder rosters are a joke and we will have 'complete' ones soon enough.

My guess now is that EA did this on purpose so you'd have to buy the game to see the rosters, and when July 14th comes around the rosters on the TeamBuilder site and the disc will match.

Except EA owns the exclusive rights to college football so 2K couldn't make a college game. Not sure how this is positive in any manner for consumers of future NCAA Football titles.

There are arguments that point both ways. I find it a bit suspicious that OMT who has been active today in the season showdown thread (surprise) has been nowhere to be found on the clearly named thread with about 200 posts concerning the rosters. And although he hasnt confirmed it yet, PastaPadre was under the impression that they are final.

As much as I loved NFL 2K5, 2K's college football games were no where near the quality of the NFL game...
