Penalties

Penalties pretty much only seem to be called in high leverage situations/situations in which a penalty would be very inconvenient, especially for the user.

For example, I was just playing a game where I was seeing out a 10 point lead. About 5 minutes to go, I just need to put together a 4 minute drive to all but ice the game. One holding penalty had been called all game (holding penalty slider is set at 55) and I get back to back holding calls on first and second down. Completely kills my drive and I have to punt. Fortunately I force a turnover on downs and get the ball back just outside my red zone. Again, back to back holding calls on first and second down.

And this isn’t a case of me just noticing the penalties in bad spots and forgetting about the ones that didn’t matter. I’ve been trying to find some good penalty sliders so have been paying close attention to penalty calls.

What’s everyone else’s experience with penalties like?

Re: Penalties

This is purely user error, but I'm routinely getting penalties called on me for attempting to call hot routes on offense in the final five seconds of the play clock.

As someone who for years has just hot routed his way out of every problematic passing down in Madden, these penalties have actually been a significant enough problem for me that I have unexpectedly gone back to the drawing board for the rote act of just getting my offense in and out of successful plays lol.

In short, my primary experience with penalties thus far has been my own fault.

Re: Penalties

It's good to see them but i don't think they are done optimally. Ex. I put holding at 55 and I get a ton of holding calls....but at 50, they are too low.

The other day, I maxed out DPI and never saw any PI at all. That being said, I played a game the other day and saw back to back DPI. So, they are hit or miss but glad they are not absent like in M24

55 is actually where I have Holding too, not 99 like I said in the OP. It’s Offside and False Start I have on 99.

I haven’t seen a single DPI or OPI yet and I definitely have DPI on 99.

Re: Penalties

I just hope EA doesn't read this thread and start messing with penalties

Let's just be thankful penalties are back in a football game.

If they are too high just turn down the sliders

But please don't give EA any reason with these types of threads to go messing with game.

We can control penalties on our own

Yeah, this is my only major problem with the penalties. Same with block in the back to a lesser extent.

...and roughing the kicker, but apparently that was patched today.

Otherwise, they're as good and fair as I've ever seen in a football video game.

Obviously I’m thankful that we have penalties. I just wish they were better implemented. It does seem to hit users more often than CPU (I’ve played roughly 90 games now and these are my observations). But my biggest gripe is how ticky tacky some of them are. And I actually do kind of agree that penalties seem to happen more often in critical situations, particularly on third and fourth downs.

For example, watch a replay whenever you get ‘roughing the passer’ calls. There are times where the light breeze created by my rusher running passed the QB results in roughing. I’ve even seen animations of guys PULL UP on their rush because they saw the ball released. But then they have a weird collision with the QB where they just kinda bump into them, and it’s roughing.

Roughing the kicker calls are way too prevalent. You see so few of those in an entire season, but we’re averaging 3-5 a game. I want them to exist. But not the way they’re implemented, and not the frequency. The fact that we really can’t call block formations because there’s a huge risk of a roughing penalty kinda sucks.

Holding calls trigger at a dramatically higher rate on outside runs than any other time, just my observation. It makes me not want to use outside runs because I know they’ll likely result in holding.

False starts happen far more to the user than AI, especially if you use the fake snap. Encroachment calls are called even when your defender does not touch the offense, which is literally necessary for it to be encroachment. But I’ve gotten the AI to jump on a fake snap, and snapped the ball while they’re across the line, and NOT had offsides called. But if my guys go across the line, it is.

As I said, I WANT penalties. I’m not complaining that they exist, and I’m not upset. I just want penalties to have more contextual applications. I want them to occur regularly for both user and CPU. I want them to have more natural animations for penalties, instead of the same 1-2 canned animations for every single application of a specific penalty. (Facemask animation anyone?) I’d even love for targeting to be in, and ejections. Particularly with some of the hit stick animations, and the trucking attempts where guys straight up lower their helmets.

If you’re cool with penalties simply existing in the state they’re in, good for you. I guess I just would like penalties to exist and be properly implemented, because only existing in the state they do doesn’t do anything for me.

I still don’t understand why people think this forum has such influence. EA aren’t going to modify penalties because there’s a thread on OS with like 10 comments saying they’re not quite right. It’s very bizarre. I guarantee EA don’t even read this forum.

And I didn’t say the penalties were too high. If anything, they’re still not frequent enough. I said they were only ever called in high leverage situations.
