What's the best RPI you've had miss out on an at large bid?

I'm doing a sim legacy for fun, and I landed a sweet gig at Wichita State. However, this past season I had an RPI of 36 miss out on an at large bid after winning the MVC regular season and losing in the conference title.

And the insane part? I kind of agree with the selection committee. My RPI was surpisingly high, but my best win came against South Illinois and Kansas State. I lost to other people, including some terrible conference losses and a ridiculous first round loss in a tournament to an independent team. Our last 10 games left us with a record of 6-4.

As a post script, we also got bounced in the first round of the NIT. Ouch.

Have you all had similar experiences?

Re: What's the best RPI you've had miss out on an at large bid?

As a follow up, the next year the team, who would return all five starters, won the national championship (fully simmed) from the 5th seed. The team was 91 overall the year it was snubbed, 94 overall the year it won.

If anything it's nice to see this game be realistic enough that it doesn't just robotically use RPI. I was just wondering if you all had similar experiences being on the nasty side of the bubble watch?

Re: What's the best RPI you've had miss out on an at large bid?

I had an RPI of 41 with UMass and missed out. I had key wins over 3 ranked schools but also had key loses to 5 schools by double digets. I had 3 starters go down for a period of time and little depth on my bench. It was my first year at UMass after 5 great years at Idaho St. The roster was thin on talent but what I had was really good. I ended up finishing 4th in the A-10 but lost in the 2nd round of the conferance tournament. Two days later my 3 starters returned. I made the NIT and ran through it, winning by 13.4ppg. The only good thing is 2 of the 3 startes that were ot were sophomores so they are back for their junior year and a run at the NCAA's. That had to be the most up and down season I have played in my 4 years with the game.

Re: What's the best RPI you've had miss out on an at large bid?

Ill be honest, In all of my legacies, which has been a lot, but most havent gone too many years, I have only missed the tournament two times. Kinda crazy to me. Lots of those years were average seasons where I was able to make a conference tourny run and get an autobid. More times than not, I dont play many games the first year or 2 and I end up with like 5 or 6 losses heading into conference tourney, where Ill either win the tourny or lose at some point, but my record usually has me in.

The 2 times I didnt make it, 1 was in my longest legacy. I started at East Tenn St. Was there for 5 years, made the tourny all 5, then went to UL-Lafayette for 3, where they were a 92 ovr when i got there and had no trouble making it. After that, I decided to go back to ETSU, and that team was attrocious. Went like 11-18, lost in the first round of the conf tourny, and I happily retired, since that was my plan going into that season anyway.

The other time was in my Fordham legacy. I didnt start there, and i forget where i started, but after the 2nd yr i left and went there. The team wasnt good, but I had a solid record of something like 20-10, where we lost in the conf semis and were 4th or 5th in the A10 in the league. This actually may have been my 2nd yr at Fordham i dont remember for sure, but we didnt make it to the tourny or NIT.

Ive still never gone to an NIT, and I know thats not really a goal, but at somepoint I do hope to go there once and win it so i dont have to go back haha. I think with this current legacy i have, my San Diego St team is good but Im not good enough with them where i could see this team making the NIT. IDK tho I guess we will see

Re: What's the best RPI you've had miss out on an at large bid?

As I mentioned in the "Selection Committee" thread, I have my own RPI calculation that correctly determines the RPI, so I'm not sure what my legacy had these guys rated but I know what mine did...

In Year 1 of the experiment, I had Iona in as an at-large (1st place in MAAC, did not win tourney), but the game did not. Iona's RPI, according to me, was 25. Siena, the conf. tourney winner, was 24.

The highest that I omitted from my selection was Morehead State, 36th overall RPI. Next were Georgia (42), Dayton (47), and Memphis (52).

St Johns just had a RPI of 31 and miss out at 19-12 . I was shocked.
