Re: Dallas Mavericks - Our Best Defense is Our Offense

Offseason

Re-signing: Markieff Morris, Brandon Williams
Additions: Spencer Dinwiddie (free agent), Quentin Grimes (trade), Naji Marshall (free agent), Klay Thompson (trade)
Draft: Melvin Ajinca (No. 51 pick)
Departures: Josh Green (to Hornets), Tim Hardaway Jr. (to Pistons), Derrick Jones Jr. (to Clippers)
Unsigned Free Agents: Greg Brown III, Markieff Morris

Last season

It all came together for the first time in the Luka Doncic era as the superstar took his maiden trip to the NBA Finals, where the Mavericks came up short to Boston. Doncic had a career year where he led the league in scoring (33.9 ppg), finished third in Kia NBA MVP voting and stayed (relatively) healthy.
But the 50-win season wasn’t just about him. He and Kyrie Irving, who finally looked happy and comfortable, were the league’s highest-scoring duo. Midseason deals brought P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford, fortifying the frontcourt. And Dereck Lively II progressed nicely as a rookie, carving a meaty place in the rotation by spring. The Mavs’ defense was tops in the league by then.

Summer Summary:

Give Nico Harrison his due. Few GMs have done so much in such a short time on the job. Last season he filled the team’s major weakness with midseason deals to bring size. This summer it was all about upgrading the shooting with the addition of four-time champion Klay Thompson.

But you can’t win them all. The other priority was keeping Jones, a tremendous perimeter defender, but he defected to the Clippers. That could be costly given his solid fit. The Mavs signed Naji Marshall as a replacement, hoping the drop-off from Jones won’t be too steep, if at all.

The question with Thompson is obvious: How much does he have left in the tank? The Mavericks probably aren’t anticipating the version that splashed his way to multiple championships, or even a player who can average 20 points. Realistically speaking, if Thompson can consistently hit the open jumper — he’ll have a few of those looks alongside Doncic and Irving — then that’s a win, even if his defense is spotty as expected.

How far can the Mavericks go?

Making a return trip to the Finals is always tricky in a competitive league, but the Mavs have a few things in their favor. Lively figures to raise his game and maintain a solid center duo with Gafford. Of course, there is the Klay Factor as he has championship experience and a desire to prove he can still contribute at a high level.

This team has few weaknesses at either end of the court, and coach Jason Kidd knows his personnel well. Pencil the Mavs in as one of the strong favorites to claim the West, even if conquering the conference — which will be formidable once again — could be harder this season than last.

Re: Dallas Mavericks - Our Best Defense is Our Offense

The Dallas Mavericks edged out the San Antonio Spurs in a nail-biting season opener, 102-100. Despite key injuries to Dante Exum (Mavericks) and Devin Vassell (Spurs), both teams came out firing. The Spurs' bench outscored the Mavericks’ reserves by a notable 28 points, led by a strong performance from Chris Paul, who posted 26 points and 3 assists. Victor Wembanyama also added 15 points and 7 rebounds, with additional scoring support from Tre Jones, Harrison Barnes, and rookie guard Castle, each hitting double figures.

For Dallas, Kyrie Irving stole the show with a high-efficiency 38 points on 13-of-26 shooting, carrying the Mavs offense and aided by Klay Thompson's 26 points and Luka Dončić’s 15. Dallas dominated in fast-break points and defensive rebounds, securing just enough possessions to secure the win. With this hard-fought victory, the Mavericks now prepare for a brief road trip against the Phoenix Suns on October 26 before returning home to face the Utah Jazz on October 28.

Re: Dallas Mavericks - Our Best Defense is Our Offense

In an intense showdown between the Utah Jazz and the Dallas Mavericks on October 28, 2024, the Mavericks clinched a 106-97 victory, even as they managed without Dante Exum due to injury. The Jazz showed depth off the bench, outscoring the Mavs with a strong collective effort. Jordan Clarkson led the charge for Utah, putting up 24 points and 4 assists, while Keyonte George and Svi Mykhailiuk each contributed 16. Lauri Markkanen added 12, with Patty Mills scoring 10, and John Collins securing a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Utah’s defense was scrappy, leading in steals to keep the game competitive.

On the Mavericks' side, Kyrie Irving took over the game, lighting up the scoreboard with 45 points on an efficient 16-23 shooting night, while Luka Dončić chipped in with 18 points as the only other Mav in double figures. Dallas dominated points in the paint and fast breaks, showcasing their speed and control.

Up next for the Mavericks is a back-to-back road game on October 29 against the Minnesota Timberwolves, followed by a home game against the Houston Rockets on October 31.

Re: Dallas Mavericks - Our Best Defense is Our Offense

In a tightly contested Halloween showdown, the Dallas Mavericks edged out the Houston Rockets 93-91 despite being outperformed in several key categories. The Rockets led in field goal percentage, three-pointers made, fast break points, bench points, and rebounds but were undone by costly turnovers. Jalen Green was electric for Houston, dropping 32 points along with 3 rebounds and 4 assists. Fred VanVleet added 14 points, while Alperen Şengün recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

For the Mavericks, free-throw accuracy and winning the turnover battle proved decisive. Luka Dončić showcased his brilliance with 31 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Kyrie Irving chipped in 23 points and 4 assists. Naji Marshall was the only other Maverick in double figures, contributing 10 points.

The Mavericks now look ahead to back-to-back home games, hosting the Orlando Magic on November 3 and the Indiana Pacers on November 4.
