Re: NB90's Volume 1: NBA 2k24 Jordan Era
Bulls open title defense with 102-90 win over 76ers
CHICAGO -- The rings and the banner were nice. What the Chicago Bulls really relished, though, was opening defense of the franchise's first NBA title with a 102-90 win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night.
“We can't think about last year too much,” Scottie Pippen said after the Bulls followed the raising of their championship banner by dropping the hammer on the Lakers in the NBA's season opener, which featured 38 points from Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley struggling to score more than normal.
Jordan said the Bulls fed off the emotion from the pregame ceremony to jump out to a first half lead, which held up even after the 76ers got within three points in the fourth quarter.
“I think we controlled the game the whole time,” said Horace Grant, who had 19 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists.
Hersey Hawkins led Philadelphia with 30 points on 14 for 21 shooting. Barkley struggled and look out of shape as shot 7 for 17 to finish with 16 points and just 6 rebounds. That said, Barkley opined in a pregame interview that he thinks the Bulls will have a tough time repeating.
