The UNC Greensboro Spartans closed out non-conference play this evening with a comfortable 81-64 win against the Eastern Michigan Eagles (7-5).
The Spartans (7-5) led by just 5 points, 40-35, at halftime, but they dominated the second half to win by a sizable margin.
Quincy Dunnington and Edwin Starks played great down low for UNC Greensboro. Dunnington tallied 14 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks while Starks added 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Martynas Montrimas totaled 13 points and 4 assists and Mathew Van Weerdhuizen made the most of his few shot attempts to end with 11 points and 6 rebounds. Hatila Verdejo also scored 10.
Damir Evans and Rashaun Alloway scored 14 points each for Eastern Michigan. Evans also dished out 6 assists and Alloway collected 4 rebounds. Cyril Garcia also scored 10 points.
The Spartans will step back into conference play with an extra pep in their step when they host Wofford next Thursday to open up 2014.

Martynas Montrimas scored 21 points to go along with 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals to lead UNC Greensboro (8-5, 3-0 Southern Conference) to a tight 80-78 win tonight against Wofford (6-6, 2-1), handing the Terriers their first conference loss of the season.
Montrimas shot 4-for-7 from the field, but he did most of his damage from the free throw line, where he shot 12-for-16, including a number of free throws in the final minute of the game that preserved UNCG's win despite the Terriers hitting three three-pointers in a row in the final minute.
Mathew Van Weerdhuizen also scored 18 points for the Spartans. Edwin Starks also totaled a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds.
Matas Frye scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds for Wofford. Frank Garlepp also scored 15 points, though he shot just 6-for-17 from the field. Nate Allison paced the Wofford offense with a 12-point, 10-assist double-double.
The Spartans have tomorrow off before hosting Charleston on Saturday.

Martynas Montrimas scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed 5 rebounds to lead UNC Greensboro (9-5, 4-0 Southern Conference) to a defensive 65-58 win tonight at home against Charleston (3-7, 2-2).
Montrimas was especially effective from the free throw line, where he made 9 of his 11 attempts. Mathew Van Weerdhuizen also scored 14 points for the Spartans, shooting 4-for-7 from three-point range.
Earnest Riggs paced Charleston's offense with 13 points and 4 assists and Odie Werch totaled a double-double with 11 points, 14 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
Both teams shot 42 percent from the floor tonight, but UNC Greensboro held advantages from the free throw line (10 made free throws to 5 for Charleston) and three-point range (7 made three-pointers to 3 for Charleston).
Next, UNC Greensboro will travel to face Davidson next Wednesday evening.

Edwin Starks scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as he led the UNC Greensboro Spartans to a 76-56 win tonight on the road against Davidson.
Mathew Van Weerdhuizen added 17 points for the Spartans (10-5, 5-0 Southern Conference), hitting 3 of his 5 shots from three-point range. Hatila Verdejo also scored 14 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.
Rasheed Avery did all he could for Davidson (4-11, 2-5), scoring 26 points, a new career-high for the 6'6" senior guard, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats fell out of the game after halftime.
UNC Greensboro will travel to Elon to take on the Phoenix on Saturday for their next game.

Gary Quick stuffed the stat sheet tonight, scoring 28 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 6 assists, as he led Elon to a surprising 73-60 win at home tonight against conference-leading UNC Greensboro.
Quick was dominant, hitting 12 of his 17 shot attempts and all three of his free throws.
Mitchell Saunders scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for Elon (2-11, 1-4 Southern Conference), as well, and Pete Foster added 12 points and 8 rebounds.
The Phoenix held a big edge from the free throw line, where they made 15 free throws to UNCG's 5. Elon also shot 45 percent from the floor.
Edwin Starks scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for UNC Greensboro (10-6, 5-1), who suffered their first conference blemish of the season with tonight's loss. Quincy Dunnington also scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds and Martynas Montrimas and Mathew Van Weerdhuizen scored 12 and 11 points, respectively.
UNCG head coach Lee Williamson said after the game, "I don't often break the fourth wall in these, but sometimes in this videogame, you get these games where you can't do anything right and your opponent does everything right. That was tonight. It doesn't matter whether you're playing the top-ranked team or the basement dwellers of college basketball; either way, you're going to lose.
"It probably doesn't help that Elon has had our number for a few years. Playing us is their Super Bowl for some reason."
The Spartans will look to get back on track next Wednesday when they travel to Boone, NC to take on Appalachian State.

BOONE, N.C. (AP) — UNC Greensboro (11-6, 6-1 Southern Conference) saw all five starters score in double figures as the Spartans outlasted Appalachian State (8-9, 5-3) on the road for a crucial conference victory, 78-69.
Martynas Montrimas led the charge for UNCG, netting 19 points. Mathew Van Weerdhuizen chipped in with 14 points, while Edwin Starks had an impressive performance in the paint with 14 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Quincy Dunnington fell just shy of a double-double, contributing 10 points and nine rebounds, and Earnest Abdur-Rahim added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Despite the loss, Appalachian State showcased a balanced attack with four starters scoring in double figures. Jared Maldonado led the Mountaineers with 12 points and nine rebounds. Dinky White and Marlon Bullock added 11 points and seven assists, and 10 points and five assists, respectively, while Hugh Byrd tallied 10 points and nine rebounds.
The Spartans held the shooting edge, converting 49% of their field goals compared to Appalachian State's 42%. Both teams protected the ball well, combining for just 11 total turnovers.
UNC Greensboro will have a two-day break before hosting The Citadel on Saturday.
