Dawn of a New Day

I drop my bags just inside the doorway of my new condo. I can’t believe I’m here. I actually made it. I walk over to the floor to ceiling windows and take in the view. I love this spot. The NIL deal was clutch for me last season. I was able to cash in and save a nice chunk of change before I even set foot on an NBA court. My mind wanders back to the moment that helped make this a reality for me.

The Cougars are in transition, Marcus Sasser fires a pass to David Grace. Grace tees up a wide open shot….

David AMAZING Grace for three!

Grace has been really been making a name for himself tonight against Arizona’s Bennedict Mathurin. Coach Sampson likes the matchup that Grace has here and calls for an ISO. Grace taking his time. He makes a move toward the basket, step back jumper….

Count it! Grace pushes Houston’s lead to double digits with that basket.

That’s 25 points for David Grace as Houston rolls past the Arizona Wildcats by a score of 72-60 to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament.

“This is where the rubber meets the road,” I say out loud to myself.

I hear little feet running across the wood floor of the condo before a small weight crashes into the back of my legs.

“Slow down, DJ.” His mother, Dominique, calls from behind me as I pick up my two year old son and give him a good view of the city that we’ll be calling home for what I hope is the foreseeable future. She stands beside me at the window and I wrap my arm around her shoulder.

“This is really happening, D.”

“I told you it would. I want you wherever I am.”

“What if I hadn’t gotten into law school out here?”

“But that’s why you applied to more than one. Wherever I landed, you would have been accepted and ready to enroll for the fall.”

“What if you would have been traded like Ty Ty?”

“God got us, babe. He wouldn’t separate us like that as hard as we worked to get to this moment.”

“You sound like Pastor Fred.”

“Please, don’t bring up my dad, babe. Don’t ruin the mood.”

My phone buzzed in my pocket. My mom was calling.

“Hey, Ma.”

Dominique picks up DJ and gives me a small wave before going to explore the rest of the condo.

“Hey, sweetie. You getting all settled?”

“As much as we can at the moment. We’re in the condo right now. The place came furnished so we’re good for right now.”

“Well, if you’re still up for it, I will be there in a few days to help make things feel a bit more like home for you.”

“Of course I’m still up for it, Ma. And I know DJ can’t wait to see his grandma. And I’m sure Dominique can use the company.”

“So how was your first practice?”

“It was pretty good. I’ve already met with a trainer and a nutritionist. We’ve got the California Classic in San Francisco on Saturday and then Summer League starts on the seventh. Gotta get ready.”

“Feels like you were just draftedyesterday. Things are moving really fast, huh?"

She was right. I was drafted on Thursday night and I flew to meet the team on Friday morning. I got a hotel room for the weekend, but my agent had some places set up for me to look at and I signed the rental agreement on this place on Sunday. I wanted to be in before practices started. Dom and DJ flew up this afternoon, I picked them up from the airport after practice. Fortunately, the place was already furnished, but if everything goes as planned, I’ll be putting my own furniture in a vacant unit about two floors up.

"And how’s Dom?”

“She’s good. Excited about starting school this fall.”

“And how’s my special boy?”

“I told you already, I’m good.” I laugh. “DJ is good. We’re all good. You’re going to love it out here, Ma.”

After a few minutes, I wrap up the call and go in search for Dominique and DJ. I find them both in DJ’s room checking out the toys and books that were delivered.

“She’s still coming right?”

“Yep. She’ll be here in a couple days.”

“Good. I think this trip will be good for her.”

“I think so too.”

“Eat!” DJ says looking up from his blocks.

“You hungry, lil' man?” I pick him up off the floor. “Well, let’s get something to eat.”

“Already on it. There is a Chick-Fil-A not too far from here and we can order some groceries from Ralph’s so I can cook tonight.”

“I get a home cooked meal, babe? Looks like Mama is on it, DJ.” I turned to Dominique. “It’s a nice day, is it a far walk?”

“About ten minutes.”

“Cool. I’ve only been at the facility and the gym these past three days. It’s been room service and door dash for your boy. Let’s get out in these Los Angeles streets.”
