NBA History Revisited: 1983- (NBA 2k23)

This dynasty will be done in MyNBA Eras in 2k23 starting with the Magic and Bird Era which begins in the 1983-84 NBA season. It differs as I'm going to play through history as it happened and see how things play out in the game when set up with the same situations as real life. This means I will be playing in commissioner mode and making all the transactions, lineup changes, injuries and draft picks as they happened in real life. Will 2k have things spot on? Will a team who underperformed in real life take a leap and change history?

As far as playing games I use a random number generator to pick a game to play from each day. With this mode having correct schedules for each team I'll control the team that won the game in real life to try to keep things accurate for that game. I'll be making posts for each date on the calendar with the nights results, news stories from around the league, even some real life news and pop culture happenings on that date. I use the New York Times archives quite often and will have that assist me in giving the readers backstory into why things are happening around the league instead of just random injuries, benchings and roster moves.

Can Anybody Stop The Champs?
The 1983-84 NBA season is just days from tipoff and the question on everybody's mind is if anybody can dethrone the defending champions, The Philadelphia 76ers. The Sixers are coming off a completely dominating run in last season's playoffs as the fierce duo of league MVP Moses Malone and Julius Erving lead the champions to a 12-1 record in the playoffs, including a 4-0 sweep against the banged up Los Angeles Lakers in the finals. Dr. J and Moses come back to try to be the first team to defend their championship since the 1969 Celtics championship team.

The Season Starts With Replacement Referees
A big story from the offseason is the NBA referees striking against the league to get a bigger piece of the quickly growing NBA financial pool. An unnamed referee said that with Larry Bird getting a multimillion dollar contract in the offseason the referees are left to pick up pennies in comparison. With the referees currently striking the preseason games were more reminiscent of the Wild West, highlighted by a fist fight between the Celtics Larry Bird and Sixers power forward Marc Iavoaroni. Will the NBA strike a deal with the referees to make sure this all important season goes off without a hitch?

Ralph Sampson Arrives With Large Expectations
One of the most exciting number one picks in the history of the NBA Draft comes into the league this season as 7 foot 4 center from the University of Virginia, Ralph Sampson will make his debut in the league. Sampson was completely dominant in college basketball and before he even steps onto the floor he is drawing comparisons to young versions of Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Sampson looks to immediately become the focus of the young and talented Houston Rockets as they look to take a step up in the West and give the Lakers some serious competition.

Defending Champs Win After Ring Ceremony
The Philadelphia 76ers began their defense of the 1982-83 World Championship by holding a ring ceremony before the game where Moses Malone, Julius Erving and company received their championship rings to symbolize their hard work from the year before. Their new season started in a battle against the Washington Bullets and Jeff Ruland, who posted the first triple-double of the new season. The 76ers were able to hold onto a one point victory in the end, 87-86. Andrew Toney led the way with 23 points, but it was Moses Malone carrying the team in the defensive struggle as he had 25 rebounds and blocked 3 shots on opening night in his defense of the MVP he was awarded last season.

Pistons Defeat Celtics in Triple Overtime
The Boston Celtics have huge expectations leading into the new season, with many people picking them ahead of the defending champion 76ers in the loaded Atlantic Division. They hit a speed bump in Detroit on opening night though as they fell 151-145 in a triple overtime game. Isiah Thomas and Vinnie Johnson each posted 36 points in the triple overtime game, but the turning point came when Larry Bird fouled out with plenty of time left in the game. The Pistons took advantage of one of the league’s best being on the bench and were able to move to 1-0 on the season.

Dan Issel Rewarded With New Contract During Halftime
Denver Nuggets Center Dan Issel has been one of the franchises all-time greatest players as he approaches many milestones in his age 35 season. The Nuggets have decided to not drag out the decision if he will return next season early as they held a cermony at halftime of their opening night victory against the Jazz where Issel signed his contract for the 1984-85 season. Issel followed up that historic night with another big night as the Nuggets went to 2-0 against the Clippers and Issel had 29 points and 9 rebounds in a game that saw Alex English put up a triple double.

Ralph Sampson Looks Strong in Debut Loss
The talk of the NBA offseason was the number one overall pick, 7 foot 4 center Ralph Sampson coming into the league. The big man offers a mix of imposing size and defense while possessing some great moves on the offensive end as well. As an individual his debut game went well as he had a double double with 24 points and 10 rebounds as well as adding 4 blocks. The Rockets didn’t fare as well though as they were run out of the gym by George Gervin and the Spurs 125-95.

Lakers Move to 2-0, Celtics Start at 0-2
Two popular picks for the NBA Finals have started in different directions through the first two nights of the season. To start the night the Celtics lost a surprising game to the Cavaliers by 5. Larry Bird performed better in this game but they were no doubt struggling with tired legs coming off of a triple overtime loss the night before. The Lakers took the court later in the evening and looked in total control of the Jazz. Magic Johnson controlled the offense like few can and had 22 points and 14 assists. Several were to top scorer for the night Jamaal Wilkes who posted 25 points. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was slowed slightly on offense by emerging defensive presence Mark Eaton as he only had 14 points. But Kareem can control the game in other ways and added 16 rebounds and 6 blocks.

SuperSonics Get Trio of Double Doubles in Rout
The Seattle SuperSonics rolled into Kemper Arena in Kansas City heavy favorites against the Kings, and they did not disappoint as they trounced the home team by 28 points. The Sonics were lead by one of the most productive big three’s in the NBA as they all three put up double doubles in this game. Center Jack Sikma led the way with 28 points and 20 rebounds. His front court mate Tom Chambers added 26 points and 11 rebounds of his own. The man who runs the offense, Gus Williams, added 20 points and dished out 11 assists, mainly to the two big men. The game wasn’t a contest for most of it as the Sonics came out running against a Kansas City team that lacks a real offensive threat and will likely struggle until that is addressed.

Spurs Win Game in Battle of Texas
The Dallas Mavericks came into San Antonio hoping that the duo of Mark Aguirre and Rolando Blackman would be able to power them past the veteran led Spurs team, but it wasn’t to be as the Spurs were running and gunning to a 131-108 victory. The Spurs were led by scorer extraordinaire George Gervin, who put up 31 points in the victory. The Iceman provided the scoring while Artis Gilmore showed why he’s one of the best defenders in the paint as he scooped up 15 rebounds in addition to adding 20 points down low. Of the three Texas teams this year the Spurs seemed like the ones most poised to make a run now, while the Mavericks and Rockets look to build on impressive young cores.
