Survival Of The Phittest | MLB The Show 16 Philadelphia Phillies Franchise

Let the record show that I am a Mets fan who so happens to go to school in Philly that knows what their fans have had to deal with for the past few seasons. Arguably the worst team in baseball for the a few years now, the Phillies lack talent but have a few young pieces to help ease the rebuilding process a bit. Young right handed starters Aaron Nola, 22, and Vince Velasquez, 23, look to spearhead the starting rotation for years to come while Maikel Franco, 23 and Odubel Herrera, 24, will play big roles as they attempt to key parts in helping improve a team whose most recent in championship 2008 was won with offensive firepower just as much as it was with stellar pitching. The Phillies may lack the pieces needed to be a contender, but they definitely have what it takes to be a contender in the competitive NL East in the coming years.

Re: Survival Of The Phittest | MLB The Show 16 Philadelphia Phillies Franchise

Nola shuts down Reds, Paredes and Rupp slug way to win

The Philadelphia Phillies opened their season up at the Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati with a 12-1 in the first game of their series against the Reds. Young ace Aaron Nola brought his A-game with him early on as he was perfect through the first 4 innings before surrendering a base-hit to Zack Cozart. He went the distance while only giving up 1 run, 3 hit, and striking out 10 for his first victory of the season. The offense got going early with Maikel Franco scoring on a fielder's choice in the 2nd. The Phillies never looked back after that first run as they the 3rd before opening up the lead for good in the 4th thanks to 3-run shot by Cameron Rupp that barely cleared the left field wall. The catcher tallied 3 hits in 5 at-bats while driving in 4 runs on the day. Ryan Howard and Jimmy Paredes both contributed to the cause with home runs in the 5th (Howard) and 6th (Paredes) as the Phillies teed-off on Homer Bailey and the Reds bullpen to earn the win. The Phillies look to make it two in a row to start of the campaign as Vince Velasquez makes his regular season debut versus Brandon Finnegan of the Reds Wednesday night at 7:10pm.

Re: Survival Of The Phittest | MLB The Show 16 Philadelphia Phillies Franchise

House Of Pain
Velasquez' 10 K effort hurt by lack of run support as Reds' timely hitting and base running prove vital in 3-1 win

For a game that lacked offense for most of its' duration, this matchup sure made up for it by providing suspense to fans of both sides throughout. The Phillies had a chance to jump out in front right away as they loaded the bases in the 1st inning with 2 outs, only for left fielder Cody Asche to ground out to end the top half. The Reds followed that up with a close encounter of their own as Zach Cozart swung and missed with 2 down and Devin Mesoraco on third to end the 2nd inning. Despite a Tommy Joseph error on a foul popup in the 3rd, Vince Velasquez continued to duel with Reds starter Brandon Finnegan as the two did not yield a single baserunner for the next three innings. The sixth inning is when Cincinnati made their first move, as Billy Hamilton swiped his 1st of 2 stolen bases on the night and came home on a Eugenio Suarez double. However, the backbreaker came in the bottom half of the 8th with 1 out after Vince Velasquez came off the mound as a fly ball by pinch-hitter José Peraza off of reliever Adam Morgan was botched by Jimmy Paredes in right and allowed for Peraza to reach third. Morgan then hit Billy Hamilton with the first pitch which led to stealing 2nd before Suarez struck out looking. Then came the at-bat of the game as Joey Votto stepped into the batters box with two runners in scoring position and 2 outs. Morgan had the option of walking Votto and pitching to Adam Duvall who was 0-for-3 up to that point, but chose to do battle with the Reds veteran slugger. He worked to get ahead 0-2 before Votto worked off a few foul balls and watched 3 balls miss the zone. Then on 3-2, Morgan left a fastball over the plate that Votto pulled between Tommy Joseph and César Hernández for a 2-run single to bury the anemic Phillies offenses hopes of tying or taking the lead late. A consolation run from Tommy Joseph's solo shot in the 9th, his first career home run, wasn't enough as the Reds shut the door on Philadelphia to even the series up at 1 game apiece. The rubber match of the series will be played early tomorrow afternoon as Jeremy Hellickson takes the ball to makes his regular season Phillies debut against the Reds right hander Anthony DeSclafani. Hellickson, 28, went 9-12 with a 4.62 ERA last season with Arizona while New Jersey native DeSclafani went 9-13 with a 4.05 ERA with Cincinnati in his first full MLB season.

Re: Survival Of The Phittest | MLB The Show 16 Philadelphia Phillies Franchise

Herrera injury + new acquisitions
Odubel Herrera breaks ankle, is out for 1-2 months; front office deals prospects for outfielders, bullpen help

The front office made some unexpected trades in the wake of center fielder Odubel Herrera breaking his ankle Thursday afternoon in Cincinnati. The Phillies first struck a deal with division rivals New York to acquire OF Juan Lagares in return for outfielders Tyler Goeddel and Aaron Altherr and relief pitcher Elvis Araujo, all of whom were with AAA Lehigh Valley. In Lagares, a 2014 Gold Glove winner, the Phillies get a great defensive outfielder who has a solid bat and can play all three outfield positions. The deal also puts Goeddel in the same organization as his older brother, Erik, who is a relief pitcher for the Mets AAA affiliate Las Vegas. Lagares could start in any outfield position upon his arrival in Philadelphia and could push the team to send Cody Asche, Jimmy Paredes, Peter Bourjos down to AAA.

The next deal that was made involved one of the more promising young pitchers in the Phillies organization, Zach Eflin, being sent to the Nationals in a package for former Phillie outfielder Ben Revere. Revere will return to Philadelphia after being dealt to Toronto on Deadline Day in 2015. They speedy outfielder gives Philadelphia another above average defensive outfielder, who is a threat on the base paths (49 SBs w/ Philadelphia in '14) and a smart hitter (.306 AVG, NL-leading 184 hits in '14). The other players the Nationals received were left fielder Richie Gregory and reliever Severino Gonzalez. Revere will more than likely start in center field while Herrera is gone and potentially push him to one of the corner outfield spots upon returning from the DL.

The last deal was a simple tradeoff between the Phillies and Dodgers that involved Michael Mariot being sent away for reliever Pedro Baez. Baez had a solid 2015 as he went 4-2 and maintained a 3.35 ERA over 51 innings. He could find himself being used as setup man to Jeanmar Gomez alongside Hector Neris.

Re: Survival Of The Phittest | MLB The Show 16 Philadelphia Phillies Franchise

As a Mets fan myself....HOW COULD YOU DO THIS??? I find it so hard to be able to play as ANY philly team....

That being said, good luck turning them around to winners...I don't mind so much since it's a video game.

Lol trust me, it felt weird doing this and it felt EVEN WEIRDER taking Lagares (one of my favorite players) away from the Mets but I love rebuilding teams in 2K, FIFA, Madden, etc. and I've made it a point to try and play a full season for the first time without simulating (which I won't end up doing because I accidentally simmed the last game of the Cincinnati series) but I'll have to swallow my Mets pride and stick by this project!
