I have huge respect for him - my CD collection is largely made up of bands that emulate him - but he hasn't been musically relevant as anything other than a museum prop since the late 70's. I'd love to meet him, but I have no interest in seeing him perform. Especially since he just did the Super Bowl. That was enough for me.

To add insult to injury, XM is broadcasting this over most of the rock stations I would typically listen to (40-46). Argh!

From what I have caught, this has been a pleasent surprise. Everything has been decent, and nothing too offensive for my ears. Pink Floyd was far and away the best thing that I have seen...

Only caught a few acts starting with Green Day.. loved GD, loved Stereophonics and Audioslave did well too.

I'm not as articulate as Mac Howard has been in the thread but I agree with every word he's said.. I definately don't see why these bands need to be criticized for what they're doing.. they're calling for attention towards a topic in the best way they can, and they're certainly being successful. Great music too .

Coverage has sadly sucked on MTV/VH1. But, AOL did a good job (*shudder*) streaming every concert online live.

My wife has been absolutely livid all afternoon. Live 8 and CMT have promised country acts (like McCraw/Hill) and VH1 has chosed not to show. But what they have chosen to show were some time wasters and acts of questionable merit. She sticking it out just in case they redeem themselves but she's in a bad mood about it. She is planning on writing Viacom but she expects to get a reply about her not being in the right demographics.

Chances are they'll be on the ABC coverage. VH1 hasn't shown anything from Rome all day.

Ok, I'll tell her to catch them in Rome (don't know why CMT said UK). She is also waiting for her favorite, Keith Urban, in Philly.

He has already played, and they didn't show it on tv. The VJ's said that he was one of the best acts to perform.

I just mae the mistake of going back up stairs and she bit my head off. I had never seen her this mad (I know, it's only a show) but her point is that these people took the time to do this and VH1 did not even bother to show them. As Homer said, I think what kicked her over was not showing Keith Urban and instead yapped over his piece. I told her about ABC but she said that's only 2 (?) hours, they'll do the highlights.

Thats been my problem with this whole thing, there is no "Big Event" feeling to it. I don't remember much of Live Aid, but what I do remember was it being an all day, huge event, shit like that just doesn't happen nowadays.

I didn't even hear about this until about a month ago, and no stations are really simulcasting things, it just doesn't have the same effect as it would if it was treated as a bigger event, but i guess ratings and tv stations have to look out for their bottom line first.

This event could of used a major network with all day coverage and major lead up coverage, I think it could of been a monumental thing, but as it is it will just fade away within a weeks time.

I didn't pay attention to this today.. highlights on in the background on ABC right now. In reading the articles on CNN and such, seems like Geldoff is just as interested in hyping this as the greatest concert ever.. Still think it is a ego thing with him...

Bucc,

CMT is having a special tomorrow night, where I have heard that they'll show the entire performances of the country acts. I believe its tomorrow (Sunday) night at 11:30 ET. My girlfriend and I watched Keith Urban online, and it sucked that they didn't show him on MTV/VH1, as he probably puts on the best show in country music right now. We've been to a few of his concerts and even met him in Nashville, great guy.

thats awesome they're gonna show it. I was disappointed when I didnt see him on MTV or VH1 today. On a side note, how can this be considered the concert of the century when it was over before 7 PM?

I saw about 10 minutes total. First time I turned it on, I realized that MTV and VH1 had the same feed. WTF? Two channels showing the exact same crappy coverage? Next time I heard what is left of Chris Cornell's voice absolutely butchering a song. Holy crap I used to love that guy, now he is the vocal equivalent of a porn star in her 50s. Finally, I got lucky enough to turn it on during Pink Floyd, only to have MTVH1 cut off Comfortably Numb. What a bunch of dumbasses.

I still can't get over having 2 channels covering the same thing. Seven different concerts at one time, and the two biggest music channels show clips and live snips of the shows. They couldn't have one showing nothing but live feeds from around the world, while the other (MTV of course) spent 75% of their time doing interviews and telling us how great the acts they refused to show were? It's not like one is network and the other premium cable or something - anyone who gets MTV also gets VH1. What, were they afraid baby boomers weren't going to tune into MTV, and would only watch VH1?

I didn't even realize this was on TV. I would have liked to see Green Day's performance, them being my favorite band.

I've seen them do it live twice, I know it's fantastic.

That's why I'm not too disappointed, because I've seen them in real life. But still.

Thanks, she and I got tickets to his September show at Red Rocks. I'm not a big fan of today's country music (I'm more much into "western" music) but Keith does play guitar extremely well.

At least here in Europe it was on all day on different stations. Swedish national television swapped between channels, but it was on from 11 a.m. until 2:00 a.m. if you wanted to. Just like Live Aid.

I find it funny that the stars who were supposed to be performing to help battle poverty, have gotten goodie baskets worth $12,000 each.

Yeah, but it really only contained a $50 watch, and a card that said $11,500 was given to "The Human Fund" in their name.

MTV, VH1 To Air Live 8 Performances Uninterrupted
07.07.2005 8:34 PM EDT

Ten hours will be broadcast commercial-free on Saturday.

Your parents might not listen, your teachers might not listen, but MTV, apparently, listens.

Responding to viewers and critics, MTV Networks has announced that it will broadcast 10 hours of Live 8 performance footage — including sets from Jay-Z, U2, Paul McCartney and others — commercial-free on MTV and VH1.

MTV and VH1 will each offer five hours of uninterrupted performance footage with differing artist lineups on Saturday. VH1 will air its Live 8 highlights from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, while MTV's batch of highlights will roll out from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"At MTV and VH1, we're in a constant and candid dialogue with our audience, and in the wake of the live events last Saturday, our viewers have resoundingly told us online they want to see full-set performances from their favorite artists," MTV Networks Music Group President Van Toffler said of the move. "As a result of viewer demand and thanks to the Live 8 organizers and performers, MTV and VH1 will air 10 consecutive hours from one of the most important musical events of our time."

MTV has also announced plans to roll out a half-hour special on the issues behind the Live 8 event on Friday at 9 p.m. ET. "Live 8: Next Steps" will re-air at 8 p.m. on Saturday immediately following the Live 8 highlights.

Both MTV and VH1 will air performances by U2, Pink Floyd, Orchestra Baobab, Coldplay and Sir Paul McCartney. MTV's coverage will also include performances by Linkin Park, Jay-Z, the Killers, Kanye West and Green Day, while VH1's coverage will add Rob Thomas, Dave Matthews Band, Sting and Maroon 5 to the mix. Viewers can also expect to see performances by Destiny's Child, Madonna, Dido, R.E.M., Shakira, Snoop Dogg, Good Charlotte, Audioslave, Mariah Carey, Robbie Williams and the Who, among others.

"Responding to viewers and critics..."

The critics were the viewers, dumbasses!

"At MTV and VH1, we're in a constant and candid dialogue with our audience, and in the wake of the live events last Saturday, our viewers have resoundingly told us online they want to see music performances, not a bunch of self-absorbed, clueless 20-somethings jabbering on about nothing."
