I went through and was listing each player by position, but then the system belched and I lost the info. I'll get around to doing it again at some point, unless one of you other guys wants to do it.

I had a post that listed each player and thier team as well (yesterday, before we had everybody), but the system belched for me too.

Seemed to work for Jim's puzzle too.
111,112,113,114 Reminds me of football practice...one, two, three, ONE; one, two, three, TWO; one, two, three, THREE!

Not to be lost--lots of references to cooking in the description: concocted, recipie, boil.
Some one noted that before, but I wanted to bring it back up because I am sure that it will be relevant. |

Just a coincidence. Everything you need for this puzzle is football related. No cooking or geography (or basketweaving, for that metter) necessary. |

Just in case this needs a hint - the list of answers (that has been created above) is not as helpful to you as the complete list of original clues and answers.
And the remaining key to the puzzle is indeed football-related. |

I still think that the differing number of dots after each clue may be a further clue to this puzzle. Edit--the space after David Boston's line is just a function of cutting and pasting. Last edited by albionmoonlight : 06-17-2004 at 11:55 AM. |

Just a thought. In football, the use of ampersand's is associated with down and distance, a la 4th & inches. 1st & 10. etc.

General observation: some of the puns in the list are very strong (Junio Seau = gold), others not so much. Since Quik is a clever guy who could no doubt come up with 100% winners if circumstances allowed, I'd guess that some of the names on the list had to be there to make the puzzle work. In other words, he didn't just need a player who's name started with a certain letter -- there must be more detail to it than that.
Figure out which players were "forced" into the puzzle, and you probably find the key to the rest.

Some observations:
- Not very many linemen. Mostly QB's, RB's, and DB's. - People like Orlando Pace (high number) lead me to believe that there isn't a substitution of numbers for letters (1=A, 2=B, etc.). At least not directly. - 1, 2, or 3 periods after clues. 1st, 2nd or 3rd, down? - Players can play for multiple teams. Could periods after clue indicate which team? - Quik spelled out ampersand in the original puzzle. Could focusing on the "&" symbol be misleading? - Ampersand represents "and" - Suprisingly few instances of "and" in the clues and answers. OrlANDo Pace, world not lAND. Pure coincidence I'm sure. - Any other "this and that" phrases in football? digamma mentioned 1st and ten. - QuikSand typed "me, too." in response to albion's elipsis observation. Why not simply "me too." Typo with the comma, or intentional? - I've spent way too much time thinking of useless crap.

For the record, "me, too" is the correct way to write the phrase. If QuikSand typed it that way intentionally, I would guess that he only intended to be correct.
No ideas about most of the other stuff here.

Okay, I'll give this another shot, since I hate to see a promising puzzle go to waste.
There's one clue "Distant petrol... Justin Fargas" Now the three dots after the clue, what could that mean? Since the clue only has two words, as does Fargas' name, it doesn't key a word. Nor could it refer to teams played for, as he was drafted last year by the Raiders and hasn't switched teams. So, I'm nowhere on the dots clue, leaning toward it keying a letter in the clue or the name. Here's a wild thought. There are 68 clues. Many notebook computers have 68 keys. Where do you put the ampersand? On top of the 7 key. But I see nothing in the clues/answers that would lead me to lay out a keyboard. Also, do we know we have all the answers correct. Quik thought it was important that we know it was Ricky Manning, not Eli. Never did confirm Wiley, Banks, Akers, Pittman or Pickett, among those answers where the clue was not unique to NFL rosters. If both first names and last names are important, why didn't he say anything? It's unlikely we have every one of those correct, by chance. Of course, some of the clues refer only to a first name, and some refer to both. And if they're not important, as he hinted a couple of times, that means position, birthdate, team, college attended and anything else related to the player is irrelevant. Which makes his hint that we need something else football-related hard to decipher. In short, I think we need more to go on here. At least an indication of the form of the correct answers to the first part. Last edited by Solecismic : 06-18-2004 at 01:35 AM. |

"So, I'm nowhere on the dots clue, leaning toward it keying a letter in the clue or the name."
My thought was that the dots might point to syllables instead of letters, but I didn't see anything there... I readily admit I lack the grey matter to solve most of the puzzles that appear here. Helping out at least a little on this one was fun and I look forward to the larger brains taking it home.

I agree... and apologize for the lack of a hint to help at this phase. Sliding in some clever wording in the original puzzle to act as a guide at this point would have been the way to go. All you need to work with from here are: -the players' last names (all of which are correct) -the way to use the dots as a sort of "key" -a way to identify the string of letters that results ...and from that, just one slight insight will be needed to place the ampersand. |

Well.. using 1 dot to mean 1st letter of last name, 2 dots = 2nd letter, 3 dots = 3rd letter, you get the following:
BSBSJNLDCHRSJSLCFHLSFBRWHMTBTBJPJMJRMAJMRDPSDWJRJMOAMRTAESSYLBDHTDJEKWRLTBDJTB That of course means nothing to me, but it one possible key. -the players' last names (all of which are correct) -the way to use the dots as a sort of "key" -a way to identify the string of letters that results This seems to hint that once we figure out what to do with the dots we still have another part of the puzzle to go to turn some string of letters into something meaningful, so I guess its possible. What other keys could these dots represent? Syllables on the last name is out, there are some 3 dots where the last name has only two syllables. |

It could mean "add that many letters to the first letter of the last name". So one dot for "Pass" would be "Q".

Another thing I wonder is whether the dots themselves are the entire key, or if they are combined with something else(the number of words in the clue, for example). Still messing around with this, not getting anywhere.

What can it mean that there are always 1 2 or 3 dots? What's something that only occurs in 1s 2s or 3s?

using 1 dot to mean 1st letter of last name, 2 dots = 2nd letter, 3 dots = 3rd letter, you get the following:
BSBSJNLDCHRSJSLCFHLSFBRWHMTBTBJPJMJRMAJMRDPSDWJRJMOAMRTAESSYLBDHTDJEKWRLTBDJTB using 1 dot = 1st leter of last name, 2 dot = 1st letter + 1, 3 dot = 1st letter + 2, you get: BRBSJNFDCHHSJSLCFHLSFBDWHMTBDBJPJMJJMDJMHDPSBWJRJMDITHTNESSYLBDHTDJTBWILRBDJTB That should be pretty similar to the first string, with so many 1 dots. I wouldn't know what to do with either of these if they're right. edit: left out the first letter in the second string, damn david boston. Last edited by Radii : 06-18-2004 at 11:24 AM. |

I have been looking at these letters for a long time now, and it's driving me nuts. I freely admit that I'm not one of the swiftest minds on here, and I haven't been of use on any of these puzzles, but I usually don't try them for nearly as long as I have on this one. It is starting to bother me that I can't get it, but I think I'm going to have to go to bed. Part of me hopes that it will be solved when I wake up, but another part of me hopes it isn't so I can have another crack at it.
