MLB 09: The Show Midseason Report

It has now been four months since MLB 09: The Show was released. When the game was released, it received rave reviews from a number of different sources and still is generating passionate discussions on forums across the Internet.

But now that consumers have been able to reflect on "The Most Realistic Baseball Game Ever," what are some aspects of the game that are already polished and excellent, and what are some aspects that still need to be worked on for next year?

To begin with, MLB 09: The Show is still the best baseball game on the market. The few positives I will mention in this article only scratch the surface of what this game offers to both hardcore and casual fans of the sport, and the nuances that are only discovered after playing scores of games really set it apart from other baseball games available.

Road To The Show (RTTS): Become a Star without Leaving the Comfort of Your Couch

One of the most exciting and fun modes to play in MLB 09: The Show is Road to the Show (RttS). It gives gamers the chance to make their way through the minor leagues to the MLB before attempting to make it into the Hall of Fame. RttS is also a very popular mode because it allows consumers to simply focus on their player, without having to delve into things like free agency and the trade deadline.

Also, because users are instantly fast-forwarded to events that their players are involved in, it reduces the time involved in playing a single game, allowing consumers to play a few games in a short amount of time.

The Most Realistic Baseball Game Ever? It’s Certainly a Strong Contender

Very few baseball games have done as good a job with the gameplay as MLB 09: The Show. The pitcher-batter duel is the best of any simulation game available. I say that because it forces the gamer to think about what pitch and location is being set up by the opposing pitcher. When a game transcends the television screen and begins to make you guess -- and second guess -- yourself, it is an extraordinary representation of the real-life sport.

A Thing of Beauty: Presentation Is Second To None

Another top-notch aspect of MLB 09: The Show is its presentation. From the look of the stadiums -- especially with the new dynamic-lighting system that transitions games from dusk to darkness -- to the look of the fielders and their sleek new fielding animations, there isn’t a prettier game of baseball available. While some people may notice problems with the player’s body proportions, it isn’t anything detrimental to the overall look of the game and the fluidity with which it plays out on the television screen.

The new lighting engine makes the stadiums in MLB 09: The Show incredibly realistic.

While many aspects of MLB 09: The Show are very impressive, there are still a few rough spots that prevent it from being the be-all-end-all in baseball videogaming. With a few changes to the Road to the Show mode, and minor fixes to the gameplay engine, Sony’s premier baseball title will be poised to leave the competition even further behind next year.

The Check-Swing System Appears to Be a Game of Chance

One of the most frustrating aspects of the core gameplay in MLB 09: The Show is the check-swing system. While it appears to be much more accurate than it was in previous versions of the game, it is still not as accurate as it should be. It’s very frustrating to suddenly be down in the count 0-2 because there was a bad check-swing call. I understand that mistakes are made on check-swing calls in real life, but sometimes the bat has barely even left the batter’s shoulder, and yet the umpire says that the batter did not check his swing.

On the other hand, the barrel of the bat sometimes ends up facing the pitcher, and yet the umpire says that the batter did not swing at the pitch. It’s a minor problem when looking at the big picture, but with a game that is already as realistic gameplay-wise as MLB 09: The Show, this fix would add even more authenticity to the experience.

Fix the Artificial Intelligence in Road To the Show

As I’ve previously said, Road to the Show is an excellent mode in MLB 09. However, there are still a few changes and fixes that can be made to make the mode even more enjoyable for consumers. Chief among these changes is improving the artificial intelligence of a created player’s teammates.

There are a number of times where I have been pitching and a fly ball has been hit to the outfield. The outfielder seems to be able to get to the ball in time to catch it, but then the animation suddenly causes him to move very slowly and eventually miss the ball by inches. Sadly, this is scored in the game as a hit because the fielder never touches the ball (and it is the right call), causing my pitcher to fail some of his goals and lose training points. This is a frustrating occurrence that happens more than I would like to see, and if it can be fixed, it would make the mode even better.

Incorporate More Fielding Opportunities Where the Player Is Not Involved

In MLB 09: The Show, SCE Studios San Diego decided to give consumers more control of their created players on the basepaths -- giving them the option to bypass part or all of their teammates’ at bats when on base. This was generally well received because gamers got to avoid a lot of the boring situations they used to experience in the previous games -- they would be on base and nothing would happen for five minutes or longer.

My criticism with the fielding aspect of the mode is that it is too easy to prepare to field the ball in the mode’s current state. I say this because whenever the game fast forwards to the created player, the users know that there is going to be some kind of play involving their player.

Why not give consumers the option to play the entire game, or at least more of it, from their created player’s perspective? This would certainly slow the games down a bit, which wouldn’t make everyone happy, but it would also make users focus on what was happening during each pitch so that they can react realistically if the ball is hit in their direction.

Allowing users to play an entire game from their created player's point of view would become tedious for some, but others may enjoy feeling like they are more involved in their team's games.

Will MLB 10: The Show's Tagline Be "Baseball Perfected?"

SCE Studios San Diego seems to have nearly perfected its baseball series, and with rumors of new player models and more training exercises for Road to the Show in next year’s version, a few of the aforementioned changes could leave other companies struggling to keep up. The developers have not rested on their laurels in the past, so it seems likely that next year’s version will be better than the already-stellar MLB 09: The Show.

The main question really is how much better can the game get?

No complains here, except for occassional CPU late burst.

As for additions to next year's installment:

- better fielding (i know it's good right now, but there's room for improvement)
- Pls pls pls and pls, TV style presentation. Matt is awesome, Rex and soup can go.

- more cutscene (TV angles please)

- commentary ( more lines please, and please take note from 2k's commentary this year)

Thats all, other than that I'm loving this game everyday!

^^ to go with the presentation I would like a little better use of the music we get to incorporate. A little longer homerun trot so we can hear that song and maybe instead of just reliever entry music we could get "warmup" music and show the pitchers making a few tosses with their music going.

there's a few things i'd like to see from what it seems like i notice w/ the game

-sliders actually working (don't mean the pitch)
-remove cpu comeback since it's a simulation game and NOT an arcade game (seems like it's always on no matter what)
-if u're an OF running straight on a ball, don't have the OF slow down to pick it up cuz those seconds do matter for plays at a base/plate (i'm perfectly fine for when a ball is off to the side of the player but not running straight at it)
-faster catcher tag animations (all other bases seem fine but i've had numerous plays at the plate where he went into slow motion and runner ended up being safe)
-the uploading of a picture would be really cool and seems like something they could easily do but i have no reference to this haha
-classic stadiums
-like someone else said, fix the hit analysis (perfect timing and solid contact will not repeatedly result in a VERY high popup just out of the infield/ground ball and i don't expect that to mean a hr everytime either)
-on the very, very minor side could they update papelbon's delivery to ONLY from the stretch? he hasn't pitched from the windup in 3 yrs. he's one of the few i noticed this with but there could be a few others.

that's all i can think of off the top of my head.

Yeah, midway through the season this game is in a dumpster somewhere. I believe this is the only time a game ever pissed me off so much I literally shattered the disc. The breakdown occurred after two days of dealing with the games bugs completely affecting the outcomes of games on top of what seemed to be at times, random chance outcomes not based on actual user input, in a fit of rage I shattered the game. I don't mind losing, but after spending an hour on something and having the hour cheated by an anomaly--two times in a row--would probably piss off just about anyone.

Never have I done this to any video game ever. Not even to The Show 08 or 07 and obviously not to the MVP Baseball series. I don't know what it was. But at least I got my moneys worth for a few enjoyable months with RTTS. I felt bad for my friend though, who seemed utterly disappointed I was selfish and shattered the disc instead of giving it to him. My bad, dude.

Wow...$60 right into the dumpster.

Like I said, I bought it the day it came out and since the disc-shattering day was in May, I had plenty of fun with my players in RTTS and a long-winded successful franchise. I really enjoyed playing the actual "game" with my friends, but when it came to playing against the AI, there are some serious flaws and limitations that took away from its realism and eventually feeling like playing it wasn't worth my time.

Getting to this point meant it was time for a break. And no doubt, I'll be back next year. But while I languish in the limbo that is the mid-baseball, pre-Madden season, I consider my midsummer gaming boredom a direct result of an unrivaled passion for the above "perfect" game...

Alright, alright, who am I kidding? I lost three games in a row after being up four runs or more coming into the 9th against the White Sox. I pitched perfectly, yet still got hammered by the entire lineup. In three straight games. Whatever, I was pissed. Can you blame me? If it would've been a real game I would've thrown inside at a few players, eventually have been ejected and called it a night. Instead I shattered a disc. Oh well.

MLB The Show 09 was great, but didn't cut it when it came CPU AI and overall gameplay. But this is coming from a person who thought MVP Baseball 2003 was the greatest baseball game ever. And beating a classic is a tall order. Sorry.

I'm guessing just turning the game off at that point where you were pissed wasn't an option.

Lets see...frustrated with a game...do I

a) turn it off, do something else and calm down

b) shatter the disc and throw my money into the trash with the pieces.

I'd choose A, but hey thats just me.

Believe me, the first two games before I was able to walk away--steamed yet still alright. But maybe I didn't leave enough separation between the second and third game of the series...I mean, what were the odds?

# 31 countryboy @ 07/16/09 09:26 PM
baseball is a funny game. I lost the first 3 of 4 to the Reds coming out of the All-Star break and 2 of those were blown leads by my bullpen. In game 4 of the series, I whipped their behinds 18-2, in a game where I scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 1st and 4 more in the bottom of the 2nd.

Trends come and go in baseball. You have to ride out the lows to experience the highs and when you feel invincible, the game will quickly bring you back to reality.

Alright, alright! Don't rub it in. You have the Show and I don't. But yeah, I get where your heads at.

To be perfectly honest, I liked The Show just as much as anyone, it's just that for about ten seconds I was an idiot. The whole thing is actually pretty embarrassing as I'm a huge fan of the series, but given the context of this article, it seemed time to share the story.

i can tell u from my games it was not poor management of my pitching for the cpu comeback. it's happened a number of times to my starting pitching, relief guys and closer, all w/ plenty of energy and pitching a good game til a bunch of bloop hits and a cheap hr. and it's happened too many times in my game for me to chalk it up to just darn good hitting haha. and i do realize this happens in real baseball during long seaons, but it seems like it happens far too often in my game. becomes frustrating. i dunno

I've always been a fan of the game so of course obviously I was going to dig this years version of it. Overall it's great, I sold my 360 just for the sole purpose of remembering that this game doesn't come on the Xbox 360. And I do not regret it.

About the gameplay. I play my franchise on manager so it evens out evenly. I had a game where I beat the Reds 18 to 6. With one of my players(Casey Kotchman) hitting 3 homers in the game. And I've had games where my pitcher is in the 5th or 6th. Give up a hit or walk, Bring in a fresh reliever, He gives up a bloop single or homerun. I've got to say I've never been more annoyed by a game when that happens. When I had it on the Ps2 while waiting for my Ps3, I ended up slinging my controller against the wall in one of these bright moments. But alas I still play it because obviously it's the best.

On my RTTS, I've had fun with it and I've done good. Made it into the Braves starting lineup out of the 2010 spring training and they even traded Chipper so I could keep the spot. And I've been crushing the Met's and the Phillie's pitching so it's allllllllllllllllllll good.

Online I've had fun with it except for the lag right before the pitch gets to you but obviously you can adapt.

Overall the game is great and worth the money, I'm still managin' my franchise and trying to find the time to do my RTTS too.

My biggest flaw though is the derby being taking out. Because mainly when I'd have my friends over, We'd challenge each other to see who could win and hit the farthest homers. Please put it back in for 2010.

I'm glad the my PS3 can't post on this board or there would be constant accusation of some "human comeback code." Honestly, in about 102 games so far I have won probably 4 or 5 times in my last at-bats and have blown games in the computer's last at-bats about the same amount of times. It all evens out, especially if you are patient at the plate. I've gotten to K-Rod, Lidge, Capps that I can remember in the 9th with leads.

Just like in real life players hit the wall. I play with the Braves and was cruising with Mike Gonzalez all year until he blew saves on back to back nights at Boston via walk off homers. In about a month since he only has 3 saves and has an ERA around 4. I removed him from the closer role for Soriano and have been doing fine.

i thought of another thing they should correct. when a pitcher gives up consecutive hits/walks/runs/hrs and you go do a mound visit, there is really no reason why their confidence should LOWER becuz of this. the reason for the pitching coach/manager going out there is to RAISE their confidence and not to lower it. that little bug is kind of frustrating. (and by kind of, i mean it is)

its not a bug, its meant to be that way. Some pitchers become even more frustrated/lose more confidence when they get the visit.

# 38 TheGameV30 @ 07/17/09 04:40 PM
also seems like about 60% of the curveballs either end up in the dirt or dead middle-middle w/ only missing the pitching mark by... 2 mm? seems kinda wrong

# 39 TheGameV30 @ 07/17/09 04:42 PM
some, sure but that means they make it normal for all the pitchers in this game? did they really go through and pick out certain pitchers to have this happen and not to others? i'm thinking no but i could be very wrong

Enough can't be said about the pitcher/batter duel. Hope this doesn't get touched.
It's absolutely intense, every batter, and when the big boys step in, you gotta be sweatin' it.
You also have to be on point when you go to bat with a big time
hitter. You need a solid eye because the pitchers tend be very careful, and smart. It is a great experience.

My only gripes with the game are the following.
1.Check Swings
2.Outfielder's

It can get frustrating when you barley hit the x button and the batter will just swing , and other times you duplicate the same action and pressure on the x button and now you get the check swing.

I would like it to work in this manner. In order to get a full swing you have to hold the button down, and depending how long you hold the button down will determine how much of a swing is executed. You barley tap it and the bats barely moves off the shoulder. The pitching in this game is so real that we need more accurate controls for the swing of the bat. Fast balls come so fast you need to get that bat started and then decide if u want to fully commit to a full swing, and I feel with this type of control we can get that.

With the outfielders. My problem is when they run at full speed and go a long way to track a fly ball when you get to the spot, they don't stick their glove out to make a play. They just stay in the running animation. I would like for them to get alert to stick that glove out when they get near that spot. It works perfectly when you have time to get under the ball, but it's very inconsistent when your running at top speed and go a long way.

Besides the 2 issues I mentioned I dont see anything else that needs to be touhed gameplay wise. Just add more dressing to the game , but the meat and potatoes of the game is very well cooked
