rFactor new Simulation Game of Choice?

For years, Papyrus has held the throne for realistic PC racing games with their NASCAR Racing series. However, Papyrus is gone, and there's a new contender on the block - rFactor, thanks to the Stock Car Revolution and the NASCAR Simulation Series mods.

The first thing you look at when looking for a mod is realism. Both NSS and Stock Car Revolution are fully realistic - with realistic tracks and cars - from Michael Waltrip's NAPA #55 Toyota to Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s new AMP Energy #88 Chevy, and from Daytona to Talladega. One omission (currently) in the Stock Car Revolution mod is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, although SCE's developers promise it will be available in a future update.

The way these two mods update themselves is very interesting. SCE has its own Mod Manager, which allows users to download and install updates as they become available, whereas the NSS mod is released in complete patches (3.3 as of this writing) when changes and updates come up.

As for the gameplay of both mods, they are both excellent. Bump drafting is very prevalent on the superspeedways, Daytona and Talladega, as you can run right up behind the car in front of you and bump draft him all the way to the front. Speeds are also represented very well in both mods, with top speeds running very close to their real-life counterparts.

If either of these mods have an issue, it's the damage modeling, however, that can be traced to rFactor in general. rFactor does not have as detailed a damage model as the old Papyrus game, but it does work rather well - parts fly off cars after a serious accident, and cars are dented by minor contact, which also alters their handling characteristics, necessitating a pit stop.

Speaking of pit stops, the NSS and SCE mods do model the "fastest 15 seconds" in NASCAR quite well, except that there is no pit crew actually "working" on your car, like was depicted in the Papyrus game. While this may seem nitpicky to some, it subtracts from the overall realism when compared to the NASCAR Racing series from Papyrus.

So, are the rFactor mods worthy successors to the Papyrus crown?? If you look at them strictly on their realism, the answer has to be a qualified yes. There are a few minor issues where the Papyrus game was better, but these could be rectified in future updates or patches. Whatever your opinion, for NASCAR fans, rFactor and these mods are now the only game in town.

i tried to get OS in for a preview but there just wasnt enough time.

Rfactor is great for racing online. Lots of different things, me and a few people go out race some formula BMWs then go run some offroad trucks, maybe a little bit of the dirt latemodels, and then some soapbox derby. People who dont have it and love road racing, it is what you need.

but as for stockcar mods, well after running ASR for so long, it just doesnt work out.

I agree with Kneeb. rFactor is a superb road racing game with bedrock online code. But it's coded for road racing and just doesn't translate to oval racing as well.

Mods like NSS and even the Champ Cars on ovals are fun, but they're not as realistic as games coded for oval racing physics, rules and racing such as ARCA Sim Racing or NASCAR Racing 2003 Season.

But rFactor is fantastic for road racing, with its strong physics, racing model, and incredible variety of available cars and tracks. I know the offline AI in rFactor gets ripped, but some of the newer mods have very good AI, especially if you turn down the AI aggression. Not as good as GTR 2, but still very playable and realistic.

That said, rFactor online with about eight or 10 other clean, hard sim racers? That's sheer sim racing bliss, baby.

Take care,
PK

What makes rFactor popular, is that it's the race game that just keeps on giving. It was really set up to BE a platform for mods, which puts it at another level that other sims. There are fine mods for other games yes, but you can't buy one game, and get the top racing in F1, Spring Cup, Champ Car, V8 Supercars, Porsche Supercup, etc. Hell, you can even do rally cars.

I said in an earlier post in another thread that there's some that hang onto NRS 2003. There's some valid points to it. But overall, rFactor is where it's going. For Sprint Cup, the COT changed everything, and the physics aren't there anymore. NRS 2003's COT mod is new models, but the old car physics. They have truck series physics in the game, but that's just a band aid. NRS 2003 may be tops for some still, but it's a standing target now, and NSS and SCE are coming fast.

And for some better presentation in the game, you can get the TV Style plugin, which adds well, TV Style overlays on top. They have ITV's F1 style, FOX's Sprint Cup style, and MotoGP's style. The spotter plugin also adds in a much better spotter for both circuits and ovals.

The thing that is really cool about this is me, slizzle24 and choas81 did a 31 car 1 hour race saturday with guys from about every part of the world with no lag at all. The code for the online racing is perfect. The only thing is that you cant reconnect after a disconnect, but i have yet to lose connection unless my router messes or my internet provider messes up. This is over a 2 year period racing.

If anyone wants to check out what all there is for this game go to http://www.rfactorcentral.com/

look at the cars and tracks, its just crazy how many different things there are.

Ramenite is spot-on about rFactor continuingto keep on giving. It's amazing how many different types of racing you can get in one $40 game, and great updates and new series and cars continue to be built by the mod community more than two years after the game's release.

And all of the mods are FREE. You're not getting nickel-and-dimed by microtransactions over some online console network, turning a $40 into a $200 game. You get EVERYTHING for 40 bucks, and most of it is done very, very well.

rFactor is an amazing game that has spawned an even more amazing community of racers and modders.

Take care,
PK

Just joining the sim world, I used to mess around with Papyrus' Nascar but got sidetracked with motocross.

Any OS guys playing this? I'll be getting this game and wheel going on Monday, I really want to use the ORR2 mod.

AVR:

I still race one or two nights per week with guys from Digital Sportspage (www.digitalsportspage.com) and sometimes with randoms.

I'm not big on any dirt mods for rFactor, including ORR 2, because I don't think the physics engine simulates the varying grip levels of racing on dirt like a purpose-built sim such as Dirt Track Racing Sprint Cars, Leadfoot or Richard Burns Rally.

But I'm in the minority, as the ORR 2 mod seems pretty popular.

Welcome aboard to rFactor. You'll love it. Feel free to post or PM with any questions or comments.

Take care,
PK
