Madden NFL 17: What's It Like To Take the Game Online?
Every year EA releases a new installment of Madden. Modes are refined and gameplay is adjusted to better fit the community’s wants and needs. However, one thing that ultimately stays the same is online play. Sure, EA adds minor enhancements, or a bigger mode like Draft Champions and Madden Ultimate Team, but the infrastructure remains largely intact.

So here are my online impressions for Madden 17 one week later.

Online Stability

The stability of EA’s servers have generally been a strong suit for the popular video game juggernaut. In the past, if there was an issue with lag or a disconnect, one of the two users were usually at fault. This remains the case with EA’s latest installment. After playing several head-to-head games throughout the week, there have been no issues to report.

However, one thing I did notice was an apparent issue with game speed during online play. In each of my games played online, the game speed was set to slow. But this was not the case on the field as the game felt almost “arcade” speed. Players moved around at lightning-fast speeds, eluding tackles and outrunning defenders with ease. The difference between slow offline in comparison to online was night and day. I expect EA will fix this issue in an update.

It's been a breath of fresh air to see EA do things differently with jersey color. Way too many times I would choose a jersey that looked eerily similar to my opponent’s uniform. This year, EA allowed users to choose dark or light jerseys, which made things less confusing for the opposition. Gone are the days of selecting all white, only to have your opponent select the white jersey with light-colored pants. Thank you, EA.

Note: EA’s servers were offline earlier in the week after being impacted by a DDoS attack.

Kicking Meter

In Madden 17, EA decided to revamp the kicking meter. Gone are the days of using the right analog stick to control power and accuracy. Instead, EA decided to go with a more classic look in this year’s game. For those who are familiar with MLB The Show, the kicking meter is similar to meter pitching.

Below is a look at the new kicking meter in Madden 17.

Surprisingly, the hardest thing to adapt to during online play is the kicking meter. Most of the time, the meter works flawlessly, with little to no delay. However, I experienced my fair share of issues with the meter. At times, the meter would seem unresponsive or delayed by a split second. This would result in a missed field goal or extra point, playing a key factor in the outcome of the game.

Online Presentation

Translating the presentation package from offline to online has always been an issue for EA. Maybe it’s not entirely EA’s fault. After all, not everyone wants to sit down and play a video game for an hour and some odd minutes. Adding more presentation, like replays and stat overlays to online gaming, would eventually become more of a nuisance than anything. With that said, it would be nice to see replays throughout the game. Everyone enjoys revisiting a spectacular catch or user interception. Stat overlays are also welcomed in any sports game.

I would also prefer to see more presentation elements in Connected Franchise. I am in a few 32-man online leagues and believe presentation would add to the excitement behind each game. Who wouldn’t want to see a highlight reel from earlier in the game? How about a touchdown near the pylon replayed with EA’s new pylon camera? It won’t be added in this year’s game, but this is something EA should strive for in the future. (And if there are technical issues or concerns with de-syncs keeping presentation to a minimum online, they need to figure out a way to solve it.)

Madden Ultimate Team

Madden Ultimate Team has become a popular mode for EA over the last several years. Much like last year’s installment, you begin MUT by choosing your play style, run or pass. After getting a few starter packs, you are then asked to choose a pair of players from one of the 32 NFL teams. This is where things get dicey. Do I stick to my favorite team and begin my Madden Ultimate Team with Ndamukong Suh and Jarvis Landry, or do I go against the grain and do what’s best for my play style? Ultimately I chose to roll with the Rams, selecting superstar running back Todd Gurley and All-Pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald.

One of the biggest gripes I had when playing Ultimate Team was the matchmaking. In my very first game, I got paired with a guy who had several upgrades to his team. My team, which was rated 61 overall, was matched up against a team rated 71 overall. Even worse, after taking a two-touchdown lead early in the second quarter, the game disconnected. Certainly I would be given the win, right? Nope, the game did not count. Maybe the servers just dropped and nobody was at fault. Heck, maybe it was my connection that caused the disconnection. Either way, I would have liked to see the result count, given the nature of the score.

Regardless, if you were a fan of Madden Ultimate Team in the past, you will be very pleased with this year’s installment.

Draft Champions

EA didn’t do much to improve Draft Champions, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. In this mode, users draft players similar to how you would in your friend’s fantasy football league. Users are given the option to select from three players with similar ratings and different positions. Will you put emphasis on stopping the run or would you prefer to load up at cornerback? The choice is yours.

The best part about Draft Champions is you get a new experience every time you draft. After selecting a team, you are given a four-game season. Win those four games and you will receive valuable points, in addition to a trophy.

Conclusion

In the end, this is the best Madden I’ve played in a decade. The offensive line is greatly improved, and the interaction between the defensive backs and wide receivers is awesome. I’ve been playing Madden for nearly two decades, and this version stands up to any other version that's come before. Whether you want to try out Madden Ultimate Team or test your luck in head-to-head games versus randoms, Madden 17 is worth checking out this year.

I wish they would develop a filter to prevent the same teams playing each other in ranked games. That gets annoying.

I agree, this is easily the best football game period since 2k5. EA has really done a number turning the franchise around. Certainly, it has its haters and it is always going to have people who hate it especially as the game becomes more and more of a simulation with each passing year. You are rewarded for understanding the intricacies of football, something I've had to accept as I got by for many years without worrying about many of the nuances on defense like having your line crash a certain direction or know what the different zones mean and how the players playing those zones play.

This is also my first year diving into MUT. I've always thought it was a waste of time but then I found out about the Legendary rewards and I'm so in! I have to say I've been wrong wrong wrong this whole time about MUT. An added bonus, if you play smart and can play often then someone who spends real $ in MUT doesn't really have an advantage or at least it is severely reduced though you do have to put work into things that give you coins and hunting for deals on the auction house.

Overall, MUT is a great mode especially with how its tied into Draft Champions. I've always gotten sick of Madden around November/December because Head 2 Head online and franchises would eventually become a drag but I think this might be the year I play Madden from release to the next release thanks to MUT...it also helps that I bought it digitally so I'm stuck with it

I do like playing the unranked Draft Champions mode (ranked requires those pesky tickets).

I've tried getting into MUT last year, but the online matchmaking system described in the above article was atrocious. I refuse to spend real money on it so it took me forever to get to the 70OVR level. I'd win a few games as a 70 OVR team and suddenly get matched up against 85+ OVR teams.

The truth is, there isn't much advantage to spending money on packs. Because you're guaranteed nothing of significance, you can easily spend a couple hundred dollars and not pull a single elite, let alone a legend. As someone whose been into MUT for 3 years now, what I've picked up along the way, the best Ultimate Team players combine grinding solos and occasionally spending money to supplement your roster. Last year, I spent about $50-$60 over the entire season. Never on standard Pro Packs. Finished with a 97 rated team. MUT's at the point now that you can build a great team without spending a dime. Since Madden 16, barriers have been removed for "Team No Money Spent". Prior, you'd always eventually hit a wall, not paying. Because the solo challenges and opportunity for packs were scarce. Total opposite now. Between MUT Rewards and Daily objective rewards, anyone dedicated can put together a nice team. I already have an 82 rated MUT team in M17 with a couple elites. $0 spent. Don't intend to even consider spending until maybe next year.

Just want to add my 2 cents....I've played Madden since its birth and I to I always favored 2k, I was an adapter of the breakfast and in my opinion was ahead of Its time speaking for sports gaming, both nfl 2k and nab 2k....anyways I agree this is the greatest version of Madden conceived and we are getting there....but prior to this year I spent zero time online because of cheese or "Madden" ball but I was so intrigued by draft champions....because of the chess like strategy now involved with what basically amounts to rock, paper, scissors...and matchups, I am having such a great time playing online finally. Instead of me stopping a fourth and long in a 0-0 game in their own end once very ten tries it's flipped to 9 out of ten times. Now when I guess right on what the opponent is about to do and counter it, it is gratifying. I've taken my losses and It was clearly because I was outsmarted or untimely turnovers and not because of the inability of the game program to effectively prevent a four verts or fullback dive I already know is coming.....I stand up and applaud this team....looking forward to what's in store down the line but until then I'll be playing offline and online all year long til the next release, and that is high praise in and of itself.

DREAMCAST, NOT ADAPTER OF BREAKFAST....I REALLY SHOULD PROOFREAD FOR AUTOCORRECT

If they'd enforce current injuries (out in real life out in the game too), bring offline penalties into ranked, slow the game speed slightly, prevent same team match ups...

then we'd have an improved h2h ranked experience. I can't help but feel that ranked h2h has been neglected for years to usher players to spend time in Ultimate team or draft champions. Maybe even adopting a Superbowl model similar to Ultimate Team for ranked h2h would be nice too.

That would be the few things I don't like still about online as well....no penalties, no injuries, no presentation....I understand why but I don't have to like it lol

Dont think Ill be playing online much, defensive line can't get any pressure and they give the user superpower over the cpu controlled players, it becomes a game of who can user control the best. You shouldn't be forced to user everything just to be successful online.

Online has way too many cheaters. Especially with this lag cheat players are doing now. This is the first madden where I finally went over .500 and I'm walking away, Once you get in the top 19% all the cheesers come out.

# 12 Fear The Clown @ 09/07/16 09:07 AM
I've definitely started running into some cheesy players in MUT. Regardless though the cheese this year can be beat without much difficulty. The majority of it this year seems to focus around 1 or 2 HB tosses but they can be beat with the right formation and line shifts, no need to even commit the D.

On a side note, what is enjoyable about only using 2-4 plays between offense and defense? I've never understood how it was style of play was fun even if it netted you a win.

It's still early in the games cycle, the cheesers or guys that like to go for it on 4th and 15 from their own 25, in a 0-0 game, will come out more and more over the next few months. I had a guy beating me 3-0, went for it on 4th and maybe 10 from his own 30, didn't convert, so we quit. In fact, I don't think I've finished a game that I we winning get this year. Granted, I've played maybe 5-8 games total online, MUT and DC combined. Even in that little sample, I've ran into a hurry up offense every play guy. A Toss and Sweep every play guy. And a deep ball, spray and pray guy.

I like the online play, just wish the speed of the game was slowed a little. Every game that I have won, I never got to finish because they quit. If you are going to get on, just play the game through!
