The Three Best and Worst Things About Madden NFL 17

Did you catch Ben's review of Madden NFL 17? If not check it out here!

The more we submerge ourselves in any specific sports video game, it’s almost impossible not to notice the tiny details that either make your jaw drop or linger like a festering wound. Madden 17 might be the cleanest football game to date, but it isn’t without its share of frustrations. Though, perhaps now more than ever, the “little things” are nice surprises instead of disappointing ones. Here are the three best and worst things about Madden 17.

The Best:

1. Special Teams. There are so many little nuances involved in emulating the most underrated facet of a football game. Unfortunately, none of them found their way into Madden before Madden 17. The ability to block kicks, see a late game punt settle at the one-yard line or the CPU run one back on you to change the tide of a game are all welcome additions. Finally, the game plays like there are three units on a football team instead of just two.

2. Jump balls. It still doesn’t work perfectly, but seeing a good corner go right up there with the likes of Odell Beckham Jr. or Kelvin Benjamin is really satisfying, especially if you’re knee deep in a franchise where drafting a shut-down corner was a priority. Another thing that can be really fun are tipped jump balls that wind up in the hands of your defense.

3. The ball physics. Let’s best honest: the ball physics of old were an eye sore. It fits into the theme of Madden formerly having too many glaring issues (both in its core gameplay and visuals) for it to really be enjoyed in any kind of simulated way. Seeing a fumble bobbled all over the field or a punt with a tad bit of spin on it land in the opponent’s goal-line area can be surprisingly satisfying. It’s one of those things that people won’t even notice a year or two from now, but it’s incredibly appreciated in Madden 17.

The Worst:

1. Stagnant line play. Every play there is a win or lose situation on the line of scrimmage. There’s no real battle -- not one of any real importance, anyway. By the time the ball is snapped, and subsequently handed off or thrown, the defensive lineman has already done one of two things: made his way through the offensive lineman in a theoretical success, or been blocked in a theoretical failure. Line play moves a little too slowly in that, while there is certainly a noticeable push/pull that allows for a forming pocket, there’s no real variance involved post-snap. A player wins or loses the battle, and if he loses, he's glued to the offensive line, rendered useless for the rest of the play.

2. Very little contextual awareness. While some sideline catch animations have been added, players (especially on the AI’s side of things) seem predetermined to run straight out of bounds on out routes. Even if it’s as low as 25 percent of the time, that’s 25 percent of the time too much. Players should always be focused on getting two feet in bounds, not running full speed ahead at the detriment of a successful play.

(Not to mention, backs routinely run right into their blockers with holes on either side. Getting the CPU to make a quick cut on that hole would be a huge step in the right direction.)

3. More quarterback variation. It’s pretty simple, really: good quarterbacks make more accurate throws than bad ones. That one little fact has seemed to avoid Madden for as long as the game has existed. Tuning bad quarterbacks to make occasionally errant throws (not just overthrows) would be a fantastic starting point. Once this variety takes hold, then looking at things like varying running styles and throwing styles also makes a lot of sense.

Every Qb throws perfect deep balls 99 percent of the time, so annoying and unrealistic. I would love to see some deep balls thrown too far inside or too far outside making the receiver adjust to it.

49er fans had to go through it when it was the last season of candlestick. stop crying

Don't have the game, but those three negatives seem far more impactful than the positives.

Great piece.

Totally agree on more off-target incompletions in general. In four games i've already had two instances where Sam Bradford (definition of an average to below average QB) was 19 for 20 and 17 for 18.

There are some issues with the game but I'm having fun and that's all that really matters to me. I have played Madden since '12 so this is a very good game so far. My biggest complaint has nothing do with gameplay but the size of the players feet. They all have size 15 feet, it looks like the old 2K and I can't stop looking at them, lol. I'm sure as time goes on I'll start to notice other things.

I heard Madden 17 for Xbox 360 is about same game as Madden 16. Am I right? Developers are focusing on PS4 and Xbox One games because eventually Xbox 360 and PS3 will be phased out where games aren't going to be made

Defense is really hard...Winston was 8/8 in the first Quarter with perfect bullet passes and bombs that his receivers caught with one hand.

Maybe my defenders were just bad...or I'm re learning how to play defense...

Having fun tho. Pre season, so it means nothing 😉

My best things:
Full player editing.
Practice squads
FORMATION SUBS.

My worst things would be:
No sim vs arcade settings for gameplay. If we had that, we wouldn't have to worry so much about patches making things less realistic from complaints.
No options to make CFM franchise mode realistic.

By 'change direction,' do u mean 'aiming the kick'? Because, to do that, u hold the left stick left or right. And, it's sensitive, so not all the way left or right. And, the kick arc disappears after a few secs to make it more difficult. U have to hold the direction WHILE performing the 3 click button kick process. That, also makes things a little more difficult. And, kind of like in real life, sometimes when setting up a final FG attempt, the team purposely runs to the middle of the hash marks to make it easy on the kicker. So, now in madden, lining up a straight away kick is easier than having to kick from a hash and aim it. Wind obviously plays a factor in these things as well.

One thing I just cannot stand and don't understand is something that has to do with the in game presentation... It seems literally 90% of the time after a play the camera does a close up of either teams coach. I understand they wanna emphasize the new coaches biut do you have to zoom in on them after every single play? I'm legit surprised that I haven't seen anyone mention this. I like to try to let games play out like I was watching a game on TV so I don't button mash to get to the line of scrimmage as fast as possible, and it irks the hell out of me that their idea if new presentation seems to have been to have the coaches on the screen between every damn play.

This doesn't bother anyone else? I really hope they can fix it and have variety on camera shots after plays

No short yardage run blocking, pass blocking still sucks, and you still cant tackle ball carriers low. Nobody goes upper body on hits anymore in the pros. They mostly go for the legs, especially the smaller safeties and corners. And the short yardage run blocking sucks, they block on the goal line the same as they block a running play fist and ten from the 30. In real life everyone attempts to out low each other on the goal line and short yardage. These things need to be incorporated into the game by next season.

After playing a few games, I have seen some good and bad. Kicking meter is challenging, but I like it. Ball physics are nice addition, but is overdone at times. Would love to see new running animations, but satisfied with overall run game. Commentary is best ever in a Madden series. Game has some issues, and hopefully patch will address them.

really? that sucks why they do that? - and I haven't picked it up yet you cant create a stadium as you did in the past anymore?

Oh its like the baseball in mlb the show once you move it you have around 3 seconds before it fades away and now you have no idea where you are aiming...eeeh!

For kicking, aim first. Once you got it in a spot, hold it there. If you do this, you have plenty of time to aim it before it disappears. Once you hit the power of the kick, you can let go of the stick & just focus on the accuracy at the bottom.

Are the QB sliders solid enough to make that happen?....over throws and under throws?

So far I'm liking the game but, like you said earlier there really needs to show some differences between great QB's, good QB's, and bad QB's. It's sad to say but the only football game that has ever shown a differential way of throwing is the very first Tecmo Bowl. There needs to be a rating for quick release, velocity in there throws. I know that they have a throwing rating already but there is no difference when any of the QB's throw the ball. This will change the way the passing game is played big time......

The single worst and most infuriating aspect of Madden 17, and every EA sports title of the last few years, is how I'm forced to waist about 10 minutes the first time I pop one of these into the system, with unskippable intro's. I had some tonight to finally pop Madden in for the first time...got to the main menu, then I was taken to a loading screen to see an intro that I didn't want to see, then to some gameplay (Rams vs Redskins) that I didn't care about (finally I can hit start->quit), then another loading screen to take me to the settings. Finally I'm getting somewhere! Except, now I'm forced into seeing the new mechanics of the game, another short load time, skipping through some prompts to quickly exit. Finally I can play like I wanted to when I originally hit the main menu. These 'features' would be a lot more interesting if I wasn't forced into them the first time playing every year.

I am enjoying this game. There are a few things that I still find annoying such as: 1. Great ball physics are ruined by the fact the ball still clips through the back wall and through objects on the sideline. 2. I would like to be able to choose a city for relocation and then choose any created team for that city. I would love to make the Brooklyn Black Knights. 3. I wish I could take my franchise team and use them in the in Gauntlet. 4. Bring back creating a stadium or use MVP 2005's formula for being a team owner. These mentioned things are not deal breakers for me, I just find them to be inconsistent with what should be after this much time in the game.

The most frustrating thing, and the only bad thing about this game, is the Online Input Delay. So many bad throws and out of bounds Field goals. Just like in NHL. Maybe it is that I am from Germany and 95% of my opponents are from the US. But that is a Gamechanger for me.
