Madden NFL 17: Gearing Up For A Big Season

Madden NFL 17 is coming out of EA Play in a fairly strong position with tons of gameplay videos being shown off as of early this week (check out the OS homepage for all of them). Let’s go through some of the things that are looking good, and a few things which we’re still a little concerned about after the jump.

The Good

Gameplay

There’s always going to be a couple things people really complain about every year in every sports game. NBA 2K, The Show, Madden -- I’ve just resigned myself to expecting there to always be some negativity no matter how good these games get. What we are seeing from Madden thus far this year is pretty darned impressive. The tackle battles, zone coverage tweaks, ball physics, new animations and overall AI improvements are making for a game that is looking more and more like the real NFL. There’s a lot to like about what we’re seeing from this year’s game and the gameplay looks to be a net positive once again.

Graphics, Lighting

The thing that popped out at me while watching the videos is how the lighting and graphics do appear to be marginally better this year, but in a way that makes the experience a bit more complete.

Graphical Overlays

Watching some of the videos coming out of E3, the overlays look better and more timely with information that’s important. I’ve long been a proponent of this aspect of the game needing improvement to make the immersion factor that much higher.

Super-Sim Improvements

This isn’t for everyone, and if you are saying you’ll never use Play the Moments, then no, this isn’t your feature. However, there are a lot of people who want to simply play enough of games to matter, and this feature will allow for quick games and movement through a franchise. Anything to let people play more seasons is a good thing in my book. But your mileage will vary.

The Let’s Wait And See

Commentary

Listen, I’m sure this is an improvement over Nantz and Simms. The commentary has been such a sore spot in Madden for so long that any change is likely to be a net positive, and the continual updates sound great, especially if new lines are added for Franchise mode as well. But, I’m not all-in with the commentary because we’ve heard how it's been improved for years, and it’s continued to be a sore spot for this series. Maybe it truly is better, but I’m not sold.

Franchise’s Immersion

Count me skeptical that a score ticker and a few improved menus are going to make Franchise mode feel like a universe that’s alive. The changes that were made do sound like positives, but I’m not sold that Franchise mode is going to feel like a dynamic, living world like it probably should at this time. I’m definitely waiting on more with this.

Gameplay (Cont’d)

Like I said above, there are aspects to the gameplay I really like, but it does seem like there are a lot of big changes this year. With that in mind, I really don’t want to get too fired up without also mentioning that there are likely to be some hiccups at launch. I would suspect -- as with past Madden’s -- a patch or two later that the game will be playing at a much higher level. While I expect the improvements to be meaningful, I can’t help but get the "something’s going to go wrong here" vibe as well.

Game Planning

This sounds good on the surface, but I’m truly skeptical of this feature. It sounds pretty game-y to me, not unlike Drive Goals last year. In terms of realism, this can basically be incredibly good or it can be incredibly artificial. At some point you should lose an advantage through a game because teams typically adjust, but I highly suspect you’ll get a bonus through an entire game, which may not be to everyone’s liking.

Big Decisions

I like the idea behind big decisions, but I really want to wait and see how this whole thing works before jumping in on the "this is absolutely a positive for the franchise" idea.

Special Teams

Let’s face it, you are thinking it along with me that we’re going to see way too many big plays on special teams this year. I hope it's properly balanced. I hope it’s properly balanced. I hope it's….

So what about you? What are you seeing with Madden NFL 17? What are you looking forward to and what are you waiting to see about? Sound off in the comments!

The new commentary doesn't seem to match the old running animation. The game sounds new, but still plays like 16 with new features.

I for one only play offline cfm/franchise and when the blogs started coming out I pre-ordered the $100 digital deluxe version because this year I can't wait to try the new franchise options but I think I'll even try MUT and DC for the first time, 8/23 can't come soon enough

I think I will enjoy CFM this year because they have given me tools to "fix" what's usually lacking in the mode, as well as I believe Play the Moment, will allow 32-team player's to bring life into CFM

But I think getting caught up in semantic discussions to what was done to CFM is pretty pointless, everyone can draw their own conclusions but it seems to me that changing things in the mode so that they are easier to use doesn't constitute an overhaul.

i agree with most of the people here but i think the people like peter moore are sared if they give everything we want in 1 year they will see a decline in sales they want to leve u wanting more the EA Staff know what we want for the most part but the owners NFLPA and EA all have to give the ok of the game

for madden to be like the ps2 days they need to hire real O-Line that are playing now as actors Clint is a great guy my message is the OL Actors can better sim the real battle in the game

these needs to be cut blocking scens of u miss your block better sound effects they got the WR/DB down good the running game looks good ST are much better

my deal is they need to look at high heat baseball yes the graphics was awful but the game had everything else once u get the game there should be like the sliders but open everything up like if u want your game to be 52-45 or 7-0 or in between

I think often times we get caught up in the expectations because we want what we used to have with franchise mode. But marketing and Rex still have to sell the game. If he says "we got a couple wish list items into Cfm but we didn't really revamp it like we want until the new engine"..people would probably pass on the game and wait till it's legit. It's our own fault for expecting too much because we want it so bad to be right. Come on guys, EA has said something every year to hype a mode..we have to ignore the hype and keep it constructive..I have seen them implement ideas straight from this forum..slowly but surely EA is building a solid football game again. I have faith in the direction but I know the drill after all these years...it's unacceptable but it is what it is. Let's focus on positives, provide constructive criticism for negatives and manage our expectations..

Telling them to stop hyping something its not, is actually constructive criticism. Because who likes to be lied to ? No one. Id rather them be honest. If the honest truth is , you didnt add much to CFM , be honest and say it. If your affraid people wont buy it as much because of that, then put more money into it , hire more people to work on it, and do more with it. I dont want to hear, CFM dont make them money, yes it does. Alot of people only buy madden for it, so that 60$ is making them money. Plus they make more than enough extra from MUT and Madden Mobile which many dont even think about how much money that is making them. Which is well into the millions https://sensortower.com/ios/us/elect...le/855627886/#.Just look how much it made them just in the month of May 2016. That is one month....Also i heard Shopmaster state last year that EA said they made millions per month off madden mobile.

When you claim for the last two years, CFM is gettting more attention than ever, sorry your leading people to think, they should expect to see more done to it than a few additions in features and redoing the menus again, which is no more than was done in 25 and 15. I mean if more is going into it , why should we not expect more being done for it? That mentality dont even make sense to me.

I hear ya...I want more as well but with a practice squad, in game ticker, fully editable rosters, gameplanning, advanced big moments super sim feature, big decisions, more customization..possible patches for pre-draft editing and formation subs...what else do you expect in one year? It seems to me like the most they have implemented in one year to Cfm in a while. Not saying Cfm is where it needs to be but if they keep this focus of making it better..future looks promising.

This isn't going out to anyone in particular, but a mod yesterday asked in another thread to cease the going back and forth on CFM and people's perceptions one way or the other.

I'm assuming it's go at your own risk beyond that point.

Great question, here are some real facts ( not my perception, lets be clear here) about this statement, "what else do i expect" . My expectation is based only on two things here, saying there was this major focus, more than ever before, and what was done in 25 ( a year when they said it was shortest dev cycle due to making game for ps3 and 4 and xbox 360 and 1) and what was done in 15 ( when they didnt claim cfm was a focus). I didnt make these turn out the same number of things, i copied them from their blogs. Now the point is ,the year they claimed madden had its shortest dev cycle , due to making the game for the new gen as well as old, had the same amount of things added then as it did the last two years when CFM got more resources than ever, and is a focus. Why shouldn't i and others expect to see more? If your not bringing more, then just be honest about it, then people tend to be less let down. Its that simple.Had they said they are adding as much as they have on average the past 4 years, ok , id know what to expect then.I dont think thats unreasonable nor negative .

We definitely still need more depth in the mode. Finally having a Practice Squad is HUGE for me, but I would love to have more immersive features in CFM. I'm one of many that likely just played NBA2K16 for free this month from PSN, and would LOVE to see a draft presentation and other draft features like that in Madden.

I always hoped they could just show randomly generated college highlights during the draft after big draft picks or something one day (or saved highlights when NCAA was around )

What is your list of features that you would want in franchise? I would like to see: (not in order)
1. True Espn integration with highlights of other games during my game breaks, a halftime show and post game show similiar to what we see on NFL network. Weekly wrap up show
2. Formation subs
3. Best on best matches
4. Custom and shareable draft class
5. Playable pro bowl
6. Better progression/regression system
7. Watchable draft combine for certain skills
8. Playable college all star game to truly scout incoming rookies..we used to have this
9. Head coach injury system
10. Team and logo creator like 2k
Just to name a few.

Yes however on top of adding news stuff, every year they have to continue to tune and fix the old stuff as well. It's an ever increasing workload every year by default.

I also have faith in this team. Last year post launch support was amazing. We made it all the way to 8 updates with the last coming in May (May!!) when EA used to basically stop in January.

because they probably want people to continue to pour money into MUT - Madden franchise always gets the short end every year
