This year’s E3 expo had no significant basketball presence as we didn’t learn anything new about the future of NBA 2K or NBA Live. This isn’t unexpected, given that it’s been some time since we last saw 2K with a big presence at E3, and we already knew Live wasn't coming out this year. Either way where does each game go from here in the short term?
NBA Live
It’s unlikely anyone expected anything from NBA Live at E3, given the most recent announcement about the franchise was that the only product released this year would be on mobile, with a console release to follow sometime in 2017. With no additional information available, it’s unclear where each title currently stands, but it’s fair to assume neither is ready for a big stage reveal. EA is fighting an uphill battle trying to re-establish the NBA Live brand name while at the same time competing with the juggernaut that NBA 2K has become. It will be interesting to see when the next piece of information rolls out to consumers.
NBA 2K
It’s quite possible given the success of the franchise, the 2K team feels it’s unnecessary to make a big splash at E3. Whatever the reason, their absence clearly isn’t a concern for fans of the series. The announcement of the two cover athletes along with the three different versions available at launch has given fans enough to chew on for a while, especially with the NBA Finals in full swing. Other than Ronnie giving out some coins with locker room codes -- and some tiny details being mentioned here -- we didn't hear a peep out of the 2K team. But with the release date only a little over three months away, we should start to learn more very soon.
What about you? Do you wish there had been some sort of announcement at E3 for either franchise? What do you think is in store for NBA Live and NBA 2K going forward?
