Where Are the Tennis Games?

Top Spin 4

The sports gaming season is quickly approaching. We’ve got two hotly anticipated titles releasing this March in the form of EA Sports UFC 2 and MLB The Show 16. Golf and hockey have returned in very real ways. There are even sports that have multiple publishers vying for consumer dollars. What an exciting time to own a console.

But where's the love for tennis games?

The only place to play tennis on the current generation of consoles is in the parks, homes and country clubs of Los Santos in Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V. It’s a very passable representation of the sport, but I would rather my post-match decisions dealt with upgrading my attributes rather than deciding what car to steal.

The last tennis simulation to appear on consoles was 2K Sports’ Top Spin 4 way back in 2011. It was critically acclaimed and 2K Czech won many awards for their efforts. So why are we five years removed with still no tennis game on the horizon? It seems to me that the problem is twofold: Tennis games don’t sell well, and development costs are very high.

Tennis Games Don’t Sell Well

Domestic popularity of tennis ebbs and flows. As a result of it being an individual sport, its popularity is dependent on the personalities participating in the sport at the time. The '80s had McEnroe and Lendl. The '90s had Sampras and Agassi. In the '00s and '10s we have had the Williams sisters and Nadal versus Federer. The way to generate casual interest in the game is to make a recognizable face your cover athlete. Perhaps take it one step further and brand the game like Madden.

Serena Williams is unquestionably the greatest female tennis player ever. Creating a game branded with her face and likeness can do for tennis games what the Tiger Woods brand did for golf. You were not playing golf, you were playing Tiger Woods. When the most dominant player in a sport is an American, launching a franchise to capitalize on their popularity only makes sense.

Development Cost

While there has not been a full featured tennis game released this generation, I’ve already mentioned you can play a fairly decent version in GTA V. Rockstar is owned by Take-Two Interactive, as is 2K Sports. Perhaps there could be a little cross-company development for a new tennis game.

Another alternative is having Rockstar develop a tennis game themselves. Rockstar Games Presents Table Tennis was the game that debuted the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE) -- and yes, it's still weird this happened. It was used as a proof of concept for Grand Theft Auto IV, Red Dead Redemption and GTA V. Quite frankly, it was a criminally underrated game. In theory, using this engine significantly reduces the cost of development. The engine has already been built, and a rudimentary version of the game has already been made using this engine.

A tennis game utilizing RAGE, made by Rockstar, and featuring Serena Williams sounds like the winningest of winning combinations.

What do you guys think? Would you buy this game? Let me know in the comments below.

I was a big Top Spin fan last generation and I would gladly welcome a new addition to that franchise. I did pick up GST 2 last year and its night and day between that and Top Spin 4. Top Spin must of been doing decent numbers to warrant 3 games over the course of the last generation I know it didn't have a regular release cycle but still it did get 3 titles though. Is licensing for Tennis really that high when we had Sega,2K and EA all producing Tennis games with licensed players and events during the last generation.

THIS. I would be all over a tennis game right now.

If it's going to be a big budget £45-50 game then its going to need Star players and not just a couple like EA McIlroy golf (never played it but going from reviews). Realistically would need 20+ M&F players. I'd want to be able to play at licensed tournaments so all the GS and then the next 10/15 top ATP i.e Indian Wells, Dubai, Madrid etc.

I think Full Ace Tennis on the PC is really good.
Tennis Elbow 4 which has been announced and is tentatively planned for release in 2017, unfortunately I cannot share any information about the second game .

Thanks JBulls. I read about the next Tennis Elbow version. Hopefully Full Ace Tennis will be updated as well. The game has been dormant for a while, but I believe the developer has been working on other projects.

Plus, the TGC dev team self-published, did early access on Steam, and went very wide. And while TGC appears to have been successful, I don't think it's been a massive runaway success in terms of revenue. I sure hope it's been profitable, because I'd love another update or new version in the future.

Anyone starting today with tennis basically has to start from scratch. That's such a huge risk in an unproven market that I don't see anyone doing it.

But I hope I am wrong!
Great article guys.

Just a quick thing on this Rich - we only ever did non-gameplay work for EA on the Tiger Series and we definitely wasn't allowed to use anything that was in those games. So TGC was from scratch. The course designer actually started as a terrain editor for a tank game.

Licensing costs are through the roof at the moment. My belief is that the only way we're going to see any innovation in the sports genre is to be creative with it, like we were with the Greg Norman Course Designer.

We should do a podcast about it

i would buy a tennis game, but it would have to have all the players like full ace tennis has on the pc.

I wouldn't waste my money on a game with 20 pros in it.
I would much rather a game with unlimited fictional players in it.

Great articule, and even better comments. Tennis and basketball were my favorite sport video games. I loved the Top Spin series, and Top Spin 4 to me was a master piece. The game play was the closest to a simulation game. Yes, it has problems with the net game play (one of those really hard aspects that almost no game was able to figure out), but the rest was great. I totally agree with Rich G. It is going to be impossible because of the sells and the cost of licensing. The worse part is that ATP tennis itself is in one of it's worse moments in History. It has less and less fans, tv ratings are in all time low and if we talk about WTA, they don't even know what to do. Serena Williams getting closer to 40 is the best player, with nobody behind her in the last 5 years. The least they could do is try to lure young people to their sport, and what better idea than with video games?
I just hope that one day we can see a Top Spin 5.

Bought Tennis Elbow because of your comment. Installed the Sam mod. Gotta say glad I did it's pretty incredible.

I'd buy a PS4 Hot Shots Tennis.

Which reminds me, I'm still waiting on PS4 Hot Shots Golf.

Tennis Elbow is fantastic

The mods are very good, and its also notepad based so you can go into the database and edit pretty much anything you want with ease.

While waiting (hopefully not in vain) for the next PC tennis game (I've always been a PC games player. Never had a console), my guilty pleasure is tennis games on my iPad.
Some of them are half-decent, and I like the idea of flicking the ball with your finger.
The ones I have are Cross Court Tennis, Stickman Tennis 2015, Hit Tennis 3, Tennis Champion, and Tennis 2012.

Thanks for commenting (& for designing a great game in TGC)! My hope is that someone with some creative control & decision making ability will see the buzz surrounding this article & seriously consider making a tennis game. It's been far too long!

I wonder if there will ever be another Top Spin Tennis game released on any console? It would probably have to be for PS4 and/or XBox One but I always loved this series of Tennis games.

I thought Grand Slam Tennis was going to be the legit Tennis game with all the hype but it was a disappointment. Not a terrible game but just not what everybody thought it would be.

It's crazy to think how long it's been since we've gotten a legit console tennis game. When the PS4/XBox One install base was low, I wasn't too surprised we didn't see a new tennis game. Now that the install base is much higher, however, I'm shocked a developer hasn't taken a chance on a new tennis game. The licensing would be high, but it would surely sell pretty well just for the fact we haven't gotten one in awhile. A new tennis game for consoles is by far at the top of my personal wishlist..

I totally agree with you. It's time for a new tennis game. Doesn't matter how polished the game will end up being if you ask me either. It's just time for one on either PS4 or XBox One. Not an arcade style game but a tennis game with real professional tennis players.

Tennis is just like boxing. Sadly it's far too much of a niche sport in the U.S. -- the major global market for games -- for a company to justify the development and licensing costs.

Licensed tennis and boxing games are almost guaranteed money losers in the current climate due to their limited appeal and the design crossroads facing all developers of niche titles. Build an arcade game, and the purists scream and don't buy. Build a sim, and casual gamers moan the game is too hard and don't buy.

Is Grand Slam Tennis 2 just for current gen consoles like PS4 & XBox One? I have Grand Slam Tennis for PS3. Wasn't aware of a Grand Slam Tennis 2. Maybe it's because the game is for current gen because I've not made the jump to PS4/XBox One yet.

The original Grand Slam Tennis was released for Nintendo Wii, and Grand Slam Tennis 2 followed for PS3 and XBox 360. I actually found GST 2 a few weeks back for $6, so I picked it up. It's a fun game, but it just makes me want a tennis game for PS4 and XBox One even more.
