NBA 2K16: MyCAREER NBA Details and Off-Day Simulator Video

By now you’ve hopefully watched the MyCAREER trailer and read about Spike Lee’s involvement in the process. But what happens after all that? Lee’s story starts at the beginning, but ends just as you make it to the NBA.

So we pick it up with the Off-Day Simulator, one the newest additions to NBA 2K16. You will have upwards of 80 off days during each season, which should give you ample time to still participate in random activities that relate to your MyCAREER.

You’ll be taken to the NEXT Menu, your UI hub between games where you decide what’s next. Time management plays a critical role in your MyCAREER, especially since you have full control of each decision made. The NEXT Menu will show what’s scheduled each day, from Endorsements, Connections and Live Practice. Each option will reward you with something new each time. Rewards can include pre-game rituals, Virtual Currency or even the option of jersey selection for games.

Endorsements

Similar as in the past, endorsements will couple your brand with an NBA sponsor to make money. Earn VC and other rewards such as billboards, commercials or your very own signature shoe.

Companies will offer you contracts that ask you to commit to a specific amount of off-days. Like an incentive-based contract, the more you do the greater you will receive. Pay attention, though, because as you improve sponsors will begin competing with each other for your services. Don’t overcommit.

Connections

Now you can build up relationships and friendships with other players, legends and personalities around the Association. Michael Jordan could take you golfing…who knows?

If you hang with Dwight Howard for a day, you can unlock th Expression Badge. Or you can choose to chill out and water ski with Blake Griffin to earn his pre-game rim hang routine. Again, the choice is yours.

Live Practice

Yeah, we ARE talking about practice.

Scott O’Gallagher, a NBA 2K developer who the knows the Xs and Os of basketball as good as any, went all out. Live 5-on-5 practice will net you new skills. There are even options to do single specific workouts to improve ratings. All of these are pulled straight from the minds of NBA organizations and personal experience.

There’s also a free shootaround period where you can explore the gym and interact with coaches and teammates.

MyCOURT

This could have been an article on its own. MyCOURT should be one of the greatest additions to NBA 2K16. This is your landing area for the mode, the place where you always come back to between games and story scenes. You can upgrade you player, check out stats and standings and watch NBA 2KTV (and story scenes over again).

MyCOURT is completely customizable, everything from the floors, walls, rims, backboards, nets, balls, lines, and so on can be modified, colored and upgraded. There is a display case to show off all of your awards and accomplishments.

You can also invite your friends to hang out and shoot around on your court while waiting to hit the Pro-Am courts together. Want to play a quick game of 5-on-5, do it. Only have four friends, how about a quick 2-on-2?

So in the end, you'll be going from a Spike Lee Joint to a mode with more control and customization. Here's to hoping all the additions mesh well together in the end.

MyCourt sounds an awful lot like a spiritual successor to MyCrib from NFL 2k5 (RIP).

If that's the case, I might give MyCareer a shot this year. The Crib was one of my favorite features from 2k5.

Anybody else feel like this isn't a "full reveal"?

We still know nothing about face scans, character customization, or college selection.

Chris Smoove's video was more in depth than this.

Improving your skills with actual drills in practice.... I can dig it.

It isn't yet a full reveal. I'm hoping for more substantial info in a full dev blog post down the road

I feel they kind of screwed up this info dump by trying to be so cryptic. The game comes out in 10 days, I want to know what I'm spending money on now.

Now they somehow screwed up the info dump lol? If they haven't done enough to convince you at this point, you always have the option of not buying day one and waiting, getting feedback from people, reading reviews.

I say hang tight. I would imagine there will be a blog for MyCareer, just as there was for the other aspects. It'd make sense, considering a lot of the confusion regarding the ins and outs of this mode thus far.

So far this is my understanding:

Part 1: Spike Lee's movie - taking us from High School to first year NBA

Part 2: MyCareer Progression
  • Improve MyPlayer by the simulator (ie Dwight Howard commercial = expressive badge)
  • Play basketball - Normal, everyday MyCareer as we've seen before.
The Spike Lee part still worries me, the simulator part intrigues me. I'm disappointed with what I know of the first part but am optimistically hopeful about the second part shown.

Gameplay itself is fully enabled for MyCareer: everything talked about by ScottOG and Da_Czar we get!!

In case anyone missed it in SimHangout 51, Da_Czar said that if we want the most Sim experience we need to play with the Auto-Play Calling setting switched to off this year.

This is very important to remember for those who want the most sim experience they can in MyCareer.

Confusion is the right word. This is very vague and confusing.

I wonder if you have to actually play those high school football games with Dwight or whoever. And then it controls like NFL 2K. That'd be cool, lol. I think I'll be more interesting in attribute building or building connections instead of the fame-chasing stuff though.

Why turn playcalling off? How does playing freestyle give a more sim experience than running plays?

Free-style this year is tied to the ACE (Adaptive Coaching Engine) as talked about in Scott's developer diary. The difference is that with ACE enabled, the ai will adapt to what is happening in the game.

The auto-play calling will not be adaptive and we will not be able to take advantage of the new ai features enabled this year.

With free-style you can still manually call plays and picks ... so plays will still be important. We just need to manually call them this year to take advantage of everything.

Wonder why they couldn't get auto-play calling to be adaptive? Oh well, just gotta get used to calling plays on my own.

It's gonna suck though for guys who don't play PG in MyCareer and can't call their own plays.

Pretty cool for myteam people, who can now get cards from playing my career through connections.

They got the live practice idea from NBA live 09 and 10. Good stuff man! I've been wanting 2K to steal that idea for the longest.

I actually really like the sound of MyCourt, even though I'm not an online guy (so I'm not sure what purpose it'll really have for me at the end of the day). Still, it vaguely reminds me of NFL 2K's The Crib and I like that. I like knowing my achievements are somewhat tangible, somewhere to be seen, alongside being able to upgrade something I own (I've read chain nets are something that can be added, for instance).

One of the biggest things for me.

All this looks amazing. Great decision to give us things to do on our off days. Has me anxious to see what the offseason is like. If everything works right, this has to go down as the best 2K easily. Maybe even sports game. Or even video game period for me since I mostly am into sports.

Ronnie said this is myCareer week basically. I'm sure the developer blog will be release in a couple days.
