Madden NFL 16: E3 Hands-On Preview

Legacy issues have plagued the Madden series for more than half a decade. After several hours of play against both another player and the CPU, I can happily say that most of those issues have either been taken care of or toned down a significant amount. It is clear that Tiburon is going out of its way to address things that were taking away from simulation football, and its not so much the things that were added to Madden 16 that make the game exciting, but rather what it took away.

Here are my quick thoughts on the game:

  • The first thing I noticed was how much smarter the CPU plays. Open wide-receivers rarely go ignored, large gaps are hit by runners and the QB isn't afraid to throw the ball away in favor of taking a sack.
  • The game is definitely smoother, with less hard cuts and every step carrying a little more weight. The game actually feels a little slower at its default speed, but that's likely a by-product of less unnecessary motion.
  • Speaking of movement, the user seems to have a bit less control over the ball-carrier. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, since the movement has always been so exploitable, but it definitely takes some getting used to.
  • One concern that the community has that can be confirmed: ridiculous catches are far too frequent, especially for the user.
  • That being said, there are a lot of new animations that are welcomed. In particular, players running along the sidelines looks a lot more organic.
  • For all of the improvements CPU AI has made, you'll still see them make little effort to stay inbounds.
  • The CPU run game is noticeably stronger, while the human run game has been nerfed to a reasonable level.
  • Formerly over-powered formations like shotgun running have also been nerfed. Running in general is tougher and seems to be strongly correlated with how good your offensive line is.
  • Still not a whole lot of missed throws for QB's. Most incompletions take place on deflected passes or impressive looking drops/strips of the ball.
  • The interaction between corners and wide receivers is much better. It is hard to say whether or not it's where it needs to be, but it's a start.
  • Kicking seems a little tougher and more sensitive.
  • Another early concern: running back kicks seems a little on the easy side.
  • Defensive players hit gaps in the line with authority, but there's definitely still some issues with the way that they track the ball-carrier.
  • The game looks great. Between the fans and the players, Madden finally has a "next-generation" look to it.
  • That said, player models could use some work. There doesn't seem to be an alternative to super defined and muscular players.
  • After two close games with the CPU, clock management skills seem to be improved. Between the two drives, the CPU scored on me twice by mixing deep passes with balls thrown to the sideline.
    • I saw a few defensive holdings and more than one pass interference. If the penalty sliders work as they should, a realistic number of penalties should be managable.
    • In my time playing against a competitive online player, the player expressed frustration with former "cheese plays" not working quite as well.

Early Outlook

It is easy to sing the game's praises after such a limited time with it, but the best news is that the game seems to be shedding itself from the numerous frustrations that have been popping up for years. Surely new problems will make themselves known after more frequent play, but there wasn't anything too glaring after my playtime. The issues I did encounter will certainly have the chance to be tweaked before release, so we'll have to wait and see on those.

Overall, the game is more difficult, a little more life-like and has visuals worthy of excitement. The early outlook is definitely trending upwards for Madden NFL 16.

This is my favorite outcome of this feature. I suck on defense at any other position.

Another question: If I don't press any button, will the WR do the kind of catch that is linked to his trait? Or do I still need to press the corresponding button?

supposedly the AI will do on their own. We'll see.

On top of safety play, Cam will be dangerous this year and Benjamin should be a beast.

Like sky said, EAs blog claims that controlled players will play to their traits/ratings. Seems like it could be a great system this year with extra layers of strategy to personnel and play calling, as well as a more wide open passing game

The Buccs could be a sick team this year as well based on what I'm seeing from the new mechanics

At this point I've seen enough to know I'll have a lot of fun with the game. There may be certain plays that happen more often than norm al but if it's a fun experience then I can live with it. I just hope the CPU AI plays well. Until we get some slider test going we really won't know for sure.

Any new equipment? Or ways to edit equipment?

This is why I'm hoping some other company manages to make a football game that is directed towards those that aren't interested in joystick jockeying and more about coaching and building teams with more statistical realism, but with Madden style graphics so it's still fun to watch the games.

Very early builds, but the game looks the same so far with the exception of the catching triggers now.

Still no gang tackling and pursuit, only one on one tackles. I did notice more stutter on one cut, but that was it. We'll see how heavy the physics are this year since they said the same thing last year.

can't really say defense plays better or blocking until we actually play, sometimes we want to see what we want to see in videos and believe it is better. That is why people always use the word "seem" in their opinions.

I think in one of the blogs released earlier this week they mentioned how QB spy had been improved so it wasn't so easy for the qb to swerve around the spying defender. Has anyone seen what this looks like in one of the videos so far? I'd like to see it in action.

Have anyone been able to see if Team Abbreviations is in Players career file. Its been missing for three years now. Thanks! Also have anyone see any injuries in game while your time with it. Im thinking they had injuries off so they wouldnt give away the new system. Atleast i hope Thats the case.

u sure you're not watching vids from last year?? I am a sim guy and a madden *****, and even I have to admit to seeing gang tackling on nearly every play. This particular aspect of the game looks nothing like 15, imo. I have been very impressed/happy with this aspect of the game from all the vids i've seen so far. Gang tackling def exists in 16. I've seen a few clips with 1 defender engaging the ball carrier, another coming to help, and a 3rd cleaning up the tackle. So, not sure how u missed it, but maybe take a look at some of the vids again.

Connected Franchise was not unlocked on the show floor.

I didn't ask about injuries but I would guess they are disabled in Draft Champions as well.

No it's not, per the Player Card thread.

There absolutely positively is gang tackling in Madden NFL 16, I saw it happen repeatedly, and the devs (particularly Rex Dickson) were very quick to point out to me the improvements in gang tackling while I was playing games.

That was the one with the long Jennings one, correct? If it was I remember that being one of the worst videos when it came to that and that video almost seemed like a different game compared to the others. Watch the "Madden 16 Draft Champions with Rex, Kolbe, & Sean" with the Chiefs and Giants. There's a nice gang tackle at around 9:40 as well as some good two man tackles throughout.

Here comes the yearly OS show, every year it's "the best ever", vast improvements. I'm taking the wait and see approach. Fooled me last year, ain't falling for it again until I can put a jury out on it myself through a rental.

Yeah, I'll for sure be taking a wait and see approach as well. It has been many years since I've felt this positive about Madden prior to release...but, like you I have been burned too many times in the past to just buy it day one again. I will be waiting at least a couple of weeks after release to hear what other people are saying before deciding on whether or not to purchase.
