MLB 15 The Show: Some Tips on How to Throw a No Hitter

Pitching a no-no in MLB 15: The Show is a herculean task. To be honest with you I’ve never done it, although I have gotten close throwing a few one-hitters.

It’s something that can be done and many have done it, but for those who haven’t here are some tips that may help you.

1. Use an ace pitcher. This is a pretty obvious tip. I would say your chances decrease exponentially if you aren’t using an ace pitcher. I’ve come very close throwing one hitters with Corey Kluber and Clayton Kershaw.

2. Don’t nibble. You need to conserve energy. You gotta be able to throw nine innings without getting tired. Yes, you should still be trying to hit the corners, but you should also not be afraid to go into the zone. Pound the hitters cold zones and let them make contact. You don’t need 10 strikeouts to throw a no-hitter.

3. Don’t give in. OK, this may sound like a contradiction, but you have to do this when you are ahead in the count. On 0-2 or 1-2 pitches, stay out of the zone. Make the hitter chase. This is one of the most important keys to a no hitter that so many people forget. Never groove a fastball on 0-2.

4. Keep your cool. If you get behind in the count, or you walk a guy or two, don’t panic. You’re still in control. Or at least tell yourself that. If you do get behind in the count, pound the hitters cold zones. If you walk one or two guys just forget about them. Heck, think of it as just another base to get an out at.

5. Use mound visits. If it works like it’s supposed to, a strategic mound visit could settle your pitcher down in a sticky situation.

6. Build confidence in your pitches. Strategically use your best pitches to elevate your confidence meters on pitches. You probably won’t use all of your pitches effectively in a game, and that’s OK. What you want to do is try to pick a few pitch types and build up confidence in them from there. I usually always try to max out my fastball, a breaking ball, and an off speed pitch. If my other pitches aren’t working. I stop throwing them.

7. Know your enemy. I know this sounds like an easy way out, but play against a bad team. Or at least a bad hitting team. If they have mostly left-handed hitters, use a left handed pitcher. Hey, sometimes you have to stack the deck to win.

8. Mix it up. Keep the hitters on their toes by mixing your pitches. Don’t be afraid to start a hitter out with a changeup or curveball. And don’t be afraid to go fastball high and tight with the count in your favor.

9. Know when to fold em’. Sometimes you just have to give in and put a guy on. Don’t be afraid to intentionally walk one of the other teams’ best hitters if the situation calls for it. If its late in the game, and a bad matchup, or you have a runner on second, an intentional walk could be the difference between a double play to end an inning or facing the extra hitter and losing your no-hit bid.

10.Dont forget to celebrate. If you do throw a no-hitter in The Show, tell all of your friends and family. They need to know of your monumentus acomplisment. Take a screenshot, post it on Twitter and Facebook, Heck, post the whole game on Youtube if your were recording it.

And hey, if you don’t get it. Just reset the game and try again.

I threw one with Jarred Cosart of the Astros in MLB 14 The Show against the Tigers, One of the Hardest Video Game Feats ever. I was one out away from NO-Hitting the Yankees in my Y2Y Franchise with the Stros this year with Alex Wood against the Yankees.

Creating rookie baseball players for use in MLB The Show: Road To The Show. The Road to the Show (RTTS) mode has quickly become a popular mode, and with that comes an emphasis on controlling a lesser-talented rookie player for an entire career. It’s quite real. But so is franchise mode. With that being said, I’ve come up with a new method for creating baseball players. I start with a new spreadsheet, and enter in the ratings of a positional player who emphasizes speed, contact and glove. And then on the row below I enter in the attributes for a player who emphasizes strength, power and arm. Then, I have all the various skills such as contact, power, fielding ability, base running ability listed in each subsequent column. In the last column is the total number of points allocated to each player. When added up in the last column, you’ll see that the attribute ratings awarded to each type of player is fairly equal. It varies for each position, but every player ranges from 500 to 600 points. The attributes range from 0 to 60. So keep that in mind when creating your players. This is the most fair and authentic method in player creation on MLB The Show. Come up with a list of fictitious characters you’ve conjured up. Make them from common baseball countries such as the United States, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada, Japan, etc. Envision them playing Major League Baseball. What do they look like? Customize them with a specific height, weight, uniform number etc. Then assign each player his attributes using the 0 to 60 ratings. Once you have designed a plethora of players in your database then create them on your MLB game. You could either leave each of them as a free agent and wait for MLB teams to sign them or assign them to a team yourself. Personally I prefer to assign every one of my created players to an MLB team. This ensures them of playing minor league baseball right away as they won’t quite be good enough to play in the show right away. They’ll develop in the minors and work their way up, just like real life. Scatter the players around Major League Baseball, and see them flourish and become the superstars of their new teams. You’ll probably feel a sense of accomplishment when these player begin making a name for themselves and making the all-star teams and winning awards and World Series titles.

When will the writers at OS realize that cold zones have very little effect on game play?

Been playing Baseball video games since Atari 2600's Real Sports Baseball, and I just threw my first Perfect game, haven't even gotten a No Hitter before. Clinched the ALCS in the process! Using Chris Sale.

I went 8.1 without giving up a hit with Pineda against the Mets. Sure enough, gave up a hit with 1 out in the 9th. I was devastated

A's franchise agains the Astros. Got through 5 2/3 with a perfect game, that ended on an error by Semien. Got through 8 with only allowing that base runner. Gave up a hit to break it up first batter of the 9th, then the wheels fell off. It was a 1-0 game, and after an error that put runners at first and third with one out, I gave up a double into the gap that ended it. Took the loss.

I threw a perfect game in I think 2012 with the doc for the Phillies and have not been able to do it since. The Show is such a great game.

The best advice is to try not think about it. If you can go through an entire without realizing thats the best case scenario but if you do realize it... try to think of something else to help keep your composure

I threw 2 no hitters in a row with the same pitcher. I find the problem being the CPU will suck the whole game then suddenly in the 9th inning the CPU turns into 1927 New York Yankees and your out fielders become BALLerinas while doing pliés and arabesques.

I threw a 1 hitter, closest I've ever come in The Show. Samardzija was perfect through 6 until Iglesias dropped a bunt. Event with my 3B playing in, it was good enough that he beat it out pretty easily. I intentionally hit him with a fastball in the 9th! It put Miggy up as the tying run with 2 outs in the 9th and he gave me a scare with a deep drive but I don't regret it.

Threw a no-hitter with John Lackey about a week ago. I didn't even realize I was doing it until the broadcasters mentioned it in the 7th inning. I'm never able to do it if I realize I'm doing it a lot sooner, because the pressure gets to me and I try to be too fine.

Took me a while but in an RTTS AA game, I had a PG going into the 9th and ended up with a 1 hitter... It seems just like in RL baseball, some nights the hitters just get swing-happy and early in the game I realized that I could get ahead with a strike on the corners with either my 4 or 2 seamer, then pitch just outside the zone up and in with the FB and down and away with a VCH or slider.

I just threw my first no-no ever on MLB the Show. Threw a couple on MVP but never on The Show. Using WTNY's OS Realism roster. And playing as the DBacks. Threw Patrick Corbin out there in Colorado against the Rockies. He had a statline of 9 IP 0H 2BB 0R 9Ks. With 1 error as the team. And he threw 105 pitches. Didn't even notice until I was through 7 2/3 innings when Matty V said he was only 7 outs away. Had the TV on as well so I didn't have the sound up.

And my rewards for playing were Erick Aybar and Odubel Herrera.

I've thrown 2 perfect games and a few no hitters. My 1st perfect game was online against another user and I pitched the whole nine innings with relief pitcher Yusmeiro Petite.. Yes I started a reliever and ended up having a perfect game lol... My 2nd perfect game was with Michael Wacha

I threw a no hitter in 15 with Jon Lester (I can't recall who against) and have gotten to the 9th innings a few times, most recently with Cole Hamels against the Mets. Finished that one with a one hitter. Before 15, honestly, I don't remember the last no-hitter. Probably in High Heat Baseball 2003, but that was so long ago.

I threw one against the CPU on All-Star difficulty with Michael Wacha also. The biggest thing that helped me get the no-hitter and throw several one-hitters goes along with #8. Not only mix of pitch types but mix up pitch locations. If you continue throwing in the same area you eventually will get pounded. Here is a link to my no-hitter with Wacha if anyone is interested.

My no hitter this past weekend. Pitching with Shelby Miller and the Braves. Stopping a 4 game losing streak vs. the Mets. I started paying attention to the at bats vs the Mets lineup after the 5th inning. I would check my previous pitch sequence to the player at the plate. I challenged a lot guys in their hot zones.

In 7 years of playing the show over 4 iterations of the game, I've only pitched 2 perfect games (both in 14) and one no-hitter (in 12). One of the perfect games was a rookie September callup, so probably as much fluke as it was talent. All three were southpaws.

So I guess my tip to all those who want to throw a no hitter is: Be a southpaw?

Honestly just try your best to keep it out of your mind and stay focused. If that doesn't work, try to imagine that you gave up a hit way back in the first inning, and you're just trying to get outs and win the game. The last thing you need is for the situation to get to you.
