Breaking Down the First Madden NFL 16 Trailer

The initial Madden NFL 16 trailer arrived earlier today, along with the first information on this game which confirms what we first reported — that Madden NFL 16 is going to be focusing heavily on the passing game.

This is all well and good, and the first trailer actually shows a few new add-ons that you might miss if you aren’t paying close enough attention. You can watch the video above or read on below...

Rob Gronkowski Catch: You can see clearly Gronkowski make the catch with Darrin Well’s arm making its way through Gronkowski’s arms. Obviously, getting tangled up is entirely possible in this year’s game. Maybe more pass interference calls as well?

Patrick Peterson Interception: The basic thing you see here is the Seahawks Wideout (Jermaine Kearse) has his hands on Peterson’s back, jockeying for position. Peterson, however, is making the play on the ball and then proceeds to hand a nasty stiff arm to Kearse. Sorry bruh.

Antonio Brown Catch: This is one I actually missed at first, but check the Raven’s defenders left hand and Brown's left hand. The Ravens defender actually separates Brown’s hand from the ball. Brown (presumably) goes on to make the catch, but really — we don’t know that to be the case or not. Which is it?!

Odell Beckham Jr. Catch: First, ugly ball path warping. I mean — why even have that in a trailer? Either Odell Beckham Jr. is a former student at Hogwarts (and all of his catches make sense) or that’s something which needs to be cleaned up. Regardless, you can see Beckham interact with the defender as he falls to the ground after making the catch.

Final Thoughts

All in all, things are shaping up nicely for Madden’s new-look passing game. Wideouts and defensive backs jockeying for position and trying to fight for the ball are going to be new things. The added controls will be interesting to see how they work, but it’ll add a new element and depth into the game which wasn’t there before.

So far, an early thumbs up to the Madden team for the focus on fixing a longstanding series of issues in the game. But there’s much more to come…

Sent you a PM. I've said all I am going to. Y'all will have to say whatever you want and see if I'm not serious about this once things are unveiled.

I'm willing to wait til we get more info and give madden a chance but after last year I need to see a lot . The game was broken with 6'5" & 6'6" WR's

Does this year's Madden have, at least, last year's FIFA physics? Yes or no?

Sure didn't see evidence in any of that or a flashing "new physics" banner or sign so I'm thinking...

Let's keep this thread on the subject of the Madden NFL 16 trailer, please.

Guys lets just focus on the trailer. If not it's simply going to get locked.

Something still isn't right about the models from the elbow down. Not that forearms are flexible body parts, but Madden somehow manages to make them look too stiff and unnatural and it's been like this since the series went 3D.

I'm going to take a stab and guess the one handed/circus catches will probably be overdone. Subtly has always been a weak point for Madden.

Im not going to lie, I buy Madden every year and I am going to buy it this year because I love football and its a licensed game. that said, I hope it brings something new to the table visually, as it sucks to see this trailer and not be able to distinguish anything from Madden 15. that said, I will temper my expectations like I do every year, and hope its fun to play

I'm hoping we get animations for players to reach for the 1st down marker. If defensive players use the aggressive tackle, they have a better chance at stopping you from getting the 1st, but a higher risk of a broken tackle and a larger gain. If they go with the 'safe' tackle option, they most likely don't stop you from the 1st down, but they lower the risk of a broken tackle and a bigger gain.

Did anyone notice on the ODB/Hall play that, instead of Hall sticking to his canned animation, that he instead fell with ODB as they were going down - transitioning from the attempted catch animation to a falling/bracing animation all thanks to ODB essentially sitting on him? I haven't played for a few weeks, but I don't believe that's been implemented to play out dynamically like that. That play, along with the hand swipe, makes it look like they're changing the way players interact with each other.

Don't get me wrong, Hall absolutely should be at least attempting to turn into the play and deflect the pass, that was horrid...but there appear to be some very promising things in the video that nobody is talking about.

If what I'm seeing is true and the interactions between players are becoming more fluid, I see the potential for blockers to properly rip-reach on an outside zone...without it being scripted to play out as such. I see potential for proper leveraging with press to disrupt the route instead of stop the WR dead. Maybe not this year, but the potential is there.

I get it - people are sick of being bent over by previous Madden iterations. Does that mean it's necessary to overlook the positive things that have been implemented by this team over the past couple years, and the improvements that continue to be made? Call the bad what it is - but don't ignore the good too...that's like saying Megan Fox as being a total tw*twaffle with a stub-for-thumbs... without admitting that you'd totally poke her. I'd totally poke her, and I totally see potential for this franchise - even if it is taking longer than I'd like.

I agree with the analogy part, at least the early part. lol

I thought Chris did a nice job of breaking everything down on each catch, including calling out the last one.

Not too much positive attention has been brought out by the first three interactions.

With this game, it's always about potential or moving in the right direction but it never gets there. Nothing is ever implemented year one and have it be amazing. If the interactions look improved, but nothing great that's what we can expect in the game. Things rarely if ever get revisited, they move on to the next back of the box item.

I also think there is cause for concern based on the controls description. Players choosing between possession catch or aggressive catch. That's got gimmick all over it. Wrs high point the ball or try to use their bodies to block out defenders. There is no such thing as possession or aggressive catching.

What I've seen is standard EA marketing. Slightly improved area of fundamental football with an arcadey twist being sold with buzz words like aggressive and possession used out of context. It'll most likely play out just like it has for years with people who like EA football eating this up and the ones who don't still unhappy. Hard to get excited about that imo.

The majority of FIFA community feedback is about UT and NOT gameplay nuances. People need to realize that FIFA, despite it's good sales, is not the measuring stick for sports games. It's the Show & 2K by a HUGE distance.

I reiterate:

This thread is about the Madden NFL 16 trailer. It is not a call-out thread. Discussion stays on the trailer and Madden in general.

People have lost the faith man.

As far as the trailer goes, it was alright. More of the same if you ask me.

I do like that the defender can't stick his hands through the WR's chest and make an int. (good news). Hopefully the balls and players will be solid objects, in all facets of the game this year. And I know that it is still early (only May), but I hope they improve the lighting and colors in the final release.

Its always been like this for madden, "I hope this, I hope that", i'm over it with this development team, it's obvious they don't value the sim as much as the arcade.

I remember this post, the OP is a good guy that believed what the guy from EA spouted. He (the guy from EA) was just a Gamechanger, that was saying (on the EA boards) that he had already played M-15' and that we were all going to "be impressed with the CFM changes", and then he doubled down, and tripled down. Each time saying just how great CFM was going to be and that we just had to trust him and buy the game. After I told him that I wouldn't blindly follow his orders and buy Madden based solely on his statements, I ended up with a five month ban.

Blah, looks so dated compared to other games. If this was PS3/360 I might be impressed. But for XB1/PS4? It just leaves me wanting more. Madden is that 40 year old former athlete still living in 1982. Time to move on.

I refuse to get hyped for Madden 16. Every year new promises are made and we all hold out hope for a better title and then we are met with disappointment every year. It's also hard to judge a title based on 4 scenes in a trailer.
