NBA 2K15's Presentation Is Still The Best

NBA 2K15's presentation package remains the best to be found in sports gaming, and it's not even close.

Let's start with pre-game and work our way forward. After all, if there is a game that accurately captures the ability to not only immerse viewers in its presentation, but to create a structured narrative from the start of a telecast to the end of one, its the NBA 2K series. At it's very best, the game is a work of art. At its worst, it still makes a really impressive effort.

The addition of Ernie Johnson and Shaq does two things: It helps set the stage for each and every game and I it reminds you that every game on the planet should have something similar. Seriously, it works that well. It's easy to be floored right off the bat, as the two work with the same fantastic chemistry seen on TNT. The very first game I played involved the Lakers, and Shaq gave a brief and earnest rundown of his relationship and respect for Kobe Bryant. Still, there's no doubt that the segment needs a healthy dose of Sir Charles in next years game.

The in-game pre-game doesn't take the foot off of the pedal. Lineup announcements are well done, with the exception of some noticeable pixelation when the spotlight shines down on players. Not a huge deal, but definitely present. If I had another complaint, it would be that players can seem a bit overexcited (especially when some of the games I played involved pre-season stuff in NBA Today) when being announced - each of them with an elaborate song or dance to go with their announcement.

In game takes one step forward and one step back. There's no doubt that you will feel right at home with Kerr, Harlan, and Kellogg. The game has definitely made progress in not only delivering excellent commentary, but making you feel like your game and individual play is driving the commentary forward. Unfortunately, it seems like there is just a hint of dead space in there. There doesn't seem to be a root cause of the problem just yet, but it's certainly not game-breaking.

Halftime still leaves a lot to be desired. The interviews still feel really fresh, and there seems to be a wider range of them. Unfortunately, everything else seems like you've hit the pause button and the game is just waiting for you to return. It would make a lot of sense for Ernie and Shaq to make a return here, for a College Hoops 2K8-like update. It would be nice, even if they were generated, to see clips of other games going on around the NBA.

The graphics are still top-of-the-line but there isn't a huge step forward in this department. Player models look a little better, with players owning the wiry height and length of a traditional NBA basketball player. Post-play animations are much more tamed, and you'll see less fist-pumping, stomping of feet, and taunting after made shots. There's also a little more variation there, and things just have a more natural feel.

The crowd feels alive at all times. Fitting with the rest of NBA 2K15's presentation package, the crowd noise has a noticeable arc. There's an early game buzz that hardly compares to the late-game roar. In broadcast mode, you can see just how good the crowd looks, even on an individual basis. There aren't a ton of duplicates, and even when there are, you usually have to look for them. One complaint here is that all crowds feel pretty similar, from arena to arena.

There's a few miscellaneous things to mention as well. There are neat little graphics that will occasionally pop-up on the bottom of the screen, usually detailing a former season or an in-season stat. Sometimes they lack context. For instance, in my first game, the Harlan was talking about Kobe returning from injury this year. While he was talking about it, an overlay popped-up saying "Last Season: The Lakers have lost 15 NBA Finals, more than any other team in NBA History." It is nitpicking to be sure, but for a game that's so close to reaching presentation nirvana, every little flaw becomes a little more jarring.

Ultimately, the presentation pairs really well what is already a pretty life-like experience in terms of gameplay. There are a few things that could still be worked out, but I'm not looking for a whole lot of fixes. Instead, I want to see more innovation.

Dont like it as much this year either (playing PC version)... pre-game is nothing special, Id like to see players do their thing before the game, usually it just cuts to cheerleaders (i could care less about those tbh) and to tip off.

Halftime show is non existant, I miss the plays highlights etc.
The after play cuts are pretty weird too I had to turn those off, a shaky cam close up of a strangely looking face of a player after almost every play? Really?

I just find myself skipping through most of the stuff after a day of playing.

All i have to say 2k bandwagoneers... this game is ok has not reached its limit, 2k14 on xbox 360 beats this all the way...

I'm sorry, I have to disagree with Chris on this one. NHL and FIFA both have great presentation, not to mention these aspects of NBA 2K15 presentation that needs to be addressed:

1) Watered down halftime show.
2) Stat overlays not triggering.
3) Excessively long cheerleader routines.
4) Long pauses in commentary.
5) Missing/inaccurate stadium sounds.
6) Signature Highlights and Player of the Game Highlights not appearing.
7) No post-game wrap up.

The game has been upgraded in almost every way.... I guess this is what happens when your the best... People nitpick. The stat thing sure its weird that it doesnt show on screen but we can all hear them talking about it. Cheerleaders on the screen to long??? Skip them if they bother you..... I think people want sweat to fly out the screen... Sweat don't hit you from the nose bleed seats you pay for and your probably paying more for that then your payong for this game.

Yeah, like I mentioned the watered down halftime stuff is weird and a disappointment. Other than that, I don't have a ton of complaints.

PS: I have played NHL. The presentation is fantastic, but it's hard for me to compare that with 2K when I'm not nearly as in tune with the world of hockey as I am the NBA.

Im not in tune... Or follow NHL either but but presentation is presentation... And sports are sports.... So when i compare 2k to NHL/madden/FIFA I like to compare how well the crowd and announcers reacts to game situations. Pre/post/halftime shows... Intros which 2k does beautifully (at home Carmello is introduced "carmelloooooooooooooo Anthony).I dont want to spoil the suprise but play as or against the defending champions in their first game of the season.....

Honestly they should've put Ernie and shaq in my career also cuz I'm never going to really have a chance to watch them online , I head straight to lineups and defensive settings !

They still do a pretty good job, even though I still wish they would add Harlan's catchphrases.
I am glad that someone else noticed this issue. I don't think that it can be fixed but you think that some at 2K would have picked up on this.

Ernie and Shaq = Great addition
Player Intros & other stuff Pre-Game = Great addition
Cheerleader = nice addition

Once they fix the bugs (Stat Overlay, no replays, Player of the Game (playing on PS4 by the way, donīt know if it works on One)) Iīm fine with the presentation.

But I do miss the halftime show though. I hope it returns in 2K16.
And if they somehow find a way that replays are being shown during the Timeouts and not straight after the play, that would be awesome.
And of course a weekly wrap up or something like that.

There is no reason why it shouldn't have the best presentation. Of all the sports, it has the least players and least amount of equipment. I would think this saves an enormous amount of the developer's time to focus on other areas of the game.

My biggest gripe this year is that it seems like in about half the games I play, the post game highlights aren't available. The announce team will tell me who the player of the game is, but the Jordan highlights never happen, and then when I go to the box score to try and watch individual player highlights, it doesn't give me the option.

Also, when do they ever show the national anthem intro? I've played the game about 6 times, but it's the exact same home team intro every time so far, which has already gotten a bit stale for me.

What a year for this article to be written..

I actually think their presentation has taken a major step back across the board.

Sure, the "pregame" show with shaq and ernie is cool, but most of the time after that, it goes right to tip off. Sometimes you'll get player introductions or the National anthem, but those are rare.

Sometimes it seems like the commentators are going to talk about the upcoming game, but it's like the game is button mashing through everything right to the tip off.

The crowd doesn't get as loud as it needs to in big game situations sometimes, coupled with the fact that the commentary remains largely unchanged, with most of Steve kerrs lines actually being cut.

Stat overlays barely work, I've never seen the league leaders in any category Stat overlay pop up and work properly.

There's no halftime show, when a player is getting interviewed by doris Burke, it shows no player stats. (the interviews seem a lot shorter and a lot less relevant this year as well. Player of the game doesn't work, nor does player highlights when you play a game longer than 6 minute quarters.

I'm sorry, but the presentation this year is not good, it's maybe mediocre at best. If they can fix the Stat overlays it will get better, but the overall presentation package is disappointing at best.

NBA 2K used to be the king of presentation. Not anymore though. I really don't understand this article at all.

They added a pre-game show and got rid of the highlights and commentating at half time.

I don't know how people can say that it a huge step backwards.

That math doesn't add up to me.

Madden has used the same player types since ray lewis was on the cover. So it/they should be working on everything else, like the atmosphere around the games....as it stands, its dull. Also not having equipment makes it more difficult i think.. They have to accurately make players hight, weight, wing span and look.

I thought the presentation is meh. They're giving us something new but then they're taking away something we want. For example, the Halftime and Post game show are just too simple...there are no highlights and that stats that they show during Halftime are not details enough...I want a details stats. It only shows rebound, field goal and a couple others but what about field goal %, turnovers, steals, time possesion....c'mon man, i want to see more.

The stats overlay that show up during the game are missing. In 2k14, I thought it was cool but at the same time annoying because it prevents you from doing what you want while these things pop up. For example, i can't do a substitution or change strategy quickly because i have to wait for this pop up to leave before i can access them. So my suggestion to developers is to make it so that user can have the ability to remove the overlay quickly by a simple press of a button. That'll solve the problem. So if it's in 2k15....that'll be cool, i just hope that it doesn't interfere with user interface. There are already glitches in the game reported by many people such as not seeing stats overlay, refs delay giving the ball to you, and client that kicked you offline while you're in the middle of the game. I even have an Online Ranked game kick me all the way back to MyTeam option...that was weird.

Some of the cool presentations they added which I like are:

pre-game show that even tell you what your season standing is when you're in myCareer mode and they tell you about your last game played whether you win or lose...i thought that was cool. How do you improve on this? I thought the studio where Shaq and Ernie sat doesn't look real. The background looks like someone just draw them up and painted with a color pen....basically it doesn't look real to me. Also, it'll be cool if they have some sort of background music in the beginning of the show.

National anthem...although I didn't get to see much of it. Isn't it random or bug? I only get to see it a couple times and never seen them again.

Cheerleaders...i thought they're the best i seen in a video game
Mascots...hilarious running diving on the court.
Interview...better than last year imo.
Commentators...it sounds the same as last year. I think it's time to get rid of Steve Kerr.
Halftime and Post game shows are missing plus the highlights. I think it's time they bring back Kenny Smith to do some highlights.

One more thing, that cool piece of cutscenes before the game w/ the music? That was the coolest thing i ever seen. I hope they don't take it away or people are going to be whining about it too lol.

I agree that when you play a game in MyGM, MyLeague, or quick game the presentation is great.

I emphatically DO NOT agree that the presentation is good in MyCareer. In fact, I think the presentation is distractingly poor in that mode. The cuts scenes are flat out bad. They are emotionally flat, poorly delivered, and irrelevant (most of the time) to the game play.

With signature highlights and POTG being buggy, I definitely have to disagree...huge hit in the presentation dept for me..

# 39 Eman5805 @ 10/13/14 01:35 PM
I like a lot about the presentation. Really well done. But some of the things the commentators....comment on are quite inane. Or rather kinda typical that they mention like it's so important. Like scoring with a layup or dunking with one hand instead of two.

I guess it's so they can talk about SOMETHING relevant because they can't record unique dialogue for each situation that could happen based around a specific player.

But I do like that now they break up conversations about players or coaches several times. Before I think they'd just have two strings of dialogue for each instance. Now there could be two changes of possession and they'll chime in with one last line about such and such player. Very nice.

Me too man. Nothing more frustrating than stringing together some good highlights with your favorite player, then not being able to bask in your own afterglow. I played a game w/ the Bulls the other day, and really had a nice game with Rose. Good dribble penetration, a few nice step back jumpers, and several really good assists. I was so hyped up to watch the highlights, only to have my blood boil when they weren't available.

C'mon 2k, this kind of stuff is BS.
