Yesterday was a day of great anticipation -- and angst for digital purchasers -- as MLB 14 The Show finally hit the market on the PlayStation 4. The release of MLB 14 The Show on PS4 signals a new generation of baseball games, hopefully one that brings great innovation, realism, and fun.
If you are still on the fence, here are five reasons you'll want to make the jump to the PS4 version of The Show:
1. "New Game; Same Great Gameplay"
Having played a preview build of the next generation version of The Show, I can say without hesitation that the core gameplay is intact. In fact, except for custom sounds and playlists (a hardware limitation), this version is "feature complete," in comparison to the PS3 version.
2. Cross Platform Saves
This is more a reason "not to not upgrade," but is still important nonetheless. If you've been playing The Show on PS3 for the last month, you shouldn't lose any progress in your franchise, Road to the Show, or Diamond Dynasty modes. The ability to transfer those saves -- assuming it works --is a true innovation for console sports titles, and allows you to transition platforms with ease.
3. Stadiums
I think the stadiums on the PS3 look pretty good, especially considering the age of the hardware. However, I think most will be blown away by the improvements made in the stadium department for the PS4 version. Crowds, backgrounds, flags, and a myriad of small details all add up to create some of the best stadiums in the business.
4. Graphics and Animations
In addition to these updated stadiums are a wealth of other graphical improvements, from dirt animations to equipment textures. Players look more lifelike, lighting is amazing, and new animations help define some situational moments. As I stated in my hands-on impressions article, it's like playing The Show with a new pair of glasses.
5. What else are you playing?
I love my PS4, but at this point, it doesn't get much use. There just haven't been that many titles released, let alone any that truly feel groundbreaking. Infamous was OK, but outside of the graphics, didn't feel that special to me. The same with Battlefield. I think MLB 14 The Show will be the first game for the new generation that will truly be worth my time (of course, being a huge baseball fan probably has something to do with that...).
