MLB 14 The Show: Five Reasons to Upgrade to PS4

Yesterday was a day of great anticipation -- and angst for digital purchasers -- as MLB 14 The Show finally hit the market on the PlayStation 4. The release of MLB 14 The Show on PS4 signals a new generation of baseball games, hopefully one that brings great innovation, realism, and fun.

If you are still on the fence, here are five reasons you'll want to make the jump to the PS4 version of The Show:

1. "New Game; Same Great Gameplay"

Having played a preview build of the next generation version of The Show, I can say without hesitation that the core gameplay is intact. In fact, except for custom sounds and playlists (a hardware limitation), this version is "feature complete," in comparison to the PS3 version.

2. Cross Platform Saves

This is more a reason "not to not upgrade," but is still important nonetheless. If you've been playing The Show on PS3 for the last month, you shouldn't lose any progress in your franchise, Road to the Show, or Diamond Dynasty modes. The ability to transfer those saves -- assuming it works --is a true innovation for console sports titles, and allows you to transition platforms with ease.

3. Stadiums

I think the stadiums on the PS3 look pretty good, especially considering the age of the hardware. However, I think most will be blown away by the improvements made in the stadium department for the PS4 version. Crowds, backgrounds, flags, and a myriad of small details all add up to create some of the best stadiums in the business.

4. Graphics and Animations

In addition to these updated stadiums are a wealth of other graphical improvements, from dirt animations to equipment textures. Players look more lifelike, lighting is amazing, and new animations help define some situational moments. As I stated in my hands-on impressions article, it's like playing The Show with a new pair of glasses.

5. What else are you playing?

I love my PS4, but at this point, it doesn't get much use. There just haven't been that many titles released, let alone any that truly feel groundbreaking. Infamous was OK, but outside of the graphics, didn't feel that special to me. The same with Battlefield. I think MLB 14 The Show will be the first game for the new generation that will truly be worth my time (of course, being a huge baseball fan probably has something to do with that...).

Got all 3 versions of the Show (Vita, PS3 & 4) but I'm not ready to consider the PS4 an upgrade until SOTS works. Until then I will keep mys PS3 Show 14 and play it equally with the PS4 Show. My Vita is for at work only.

I must say that this is a uncompelling list. Basically what it sounds like is the same game with prettier graphics.

How do you back up your files so you can upload the save on ps3 and download on ps4? I'm having so much trouble here.

One reason why NOT to upgrade is that the full feature parity is not completely accurate. For those of you who like the Move Controls and/or the 3D feature for MLB the Show, both are missing from the PS4 version.

I know some don't care about those features, but for those of you who do, please be aware that the PS4 version does not have either of those options available.

I've paid 100 to get The Show early in the past. So an extra 20.00 isn't jack
I played the PS3 version until PS4 version was out and IMO it's well worth the upgrade if you have a PS4.
Then again I bought a PS3 (600.00) just to have The Show.
It's the main game I look forward to each year over any other.

I didn't think you had to upload to the cloud in the game, I thought if you had PS Plus and saved it in your online storage that that would work. So it was a bit disappointing to find that you can only save 1 game from the 3 game modes for cross platform saving or continuing the mode in future iterations.

Hmmm... So my RTTS player might not transfer over. I just had it saved via PS+ cloud and on my PS3.

Only works with the In Game cloud save NOT PS+ cloud.

# 33 Brandwin @ 05/08/14 03:59 PM
Doh! I don't think I saved it that way. I am not sure. Oh well. I won't lose a lot of progress but I will lose the stubbs I paid for and used on my RTTS player.

Was this known before PS4 release or discovered after?

I didn't either lol.
No biggie for me though as I used PS3 version mainly to get a feel for the settings.

Don't know when it was known(I just didn't even think about the in game cloud) but I believe the cross save games we've had are all through in game cloud saves like last years PS Vita to PS3 saves. Or at least I thought that was the only way you could do the cross saves from VITA to PS3.
So if that's the case I should have known better.

i didnt buy 14 because i was holding out to buy a ps 4 and the show for it. i bought a ps 3 because of the show two years ago and didnt regret my decision. im not so sure i should do the same here im waiting for operation sports review. if i decide not upgrade to the ps 4 version is it worth it to upgrade to 14 for the ps 3. i dont play online i usually do a franchise with the cardinals and royals both. my ps 3 was stolen and i filed a police report i did get it back but they deleted my franchise of the cardinals and royals and i played 75 games of each. for that reason alone i dont want to start all over on 13 again. if i play offline is it worth the upgrade to ps 4?

I don't know how I did it, but I avoided the temptation of getting the PS3 version and waited until the 4 version dropped. It was pure hell! Now that I have had the 4 for a few days, I am in heaven. A slight upgrade this year, but will continue to get better and better.
