OS Fact or Fiction: NHL 13 will be the Sports GOTY

NHL 13 will be the Sports Game of the Year.

Glenn Wigmore - Fiction:
The NHL franchise these days is always a quality product, without a doubt. It brings to the table a strong suite of modes, very solid visuals, constantly improving gameplay mechanics, and incredibly addictive online options such as EASHL and Hockey Ultimate Team.

All that said, the game is not without some nagging issues. The fighting engine continues to be awful, as it really doesn't represent what fighting is in hockey or how it works. The bells and whistles in the presentation haven't seen much of an upgrade in years, and the commentary, while robust in some respects, is also getting a bit long in the tooth. Additionally, the online modes continue to be hampered (although a lot less now) by some shoddy AI and annoying exploits.

This year's revised skating engined and GM Connected feature both sound like meaningful upgrades in a lot of ways, but it's hard to stack up the steady plod of upgrades that NHL receives to the visual and gameplay might of titles such as MLB 12: The Show, NBA 2K12 and FIFA 12.

I truly enjoy the NHL series a great deal, and I always feel that the product is top-level stuff. However, to be a true GOTY, I feel the product needs to address the lingering issues, add something truly revolutionary, and get people who aren't just hockey fans talking about the product.

NHL 13 a Sports GOTY candidate? Not so fast says Kelvin and Glenn.

Kelvin Mak - Fiction: Well, mostly fiction, anyway.

Even though I seem like OS' resident cynic, there is a part of me that holds out hope that all their promised improvements will pan out (and not introduce any new glitches). If two of my biggest gripes-- CPU defenders' gap control, the inability to cycle the puck down low because of the none-too-bright AI teammate positioning-- are indeed fixed, then I'll be a lot more convinced.

But that's a hard ask, and, even if they all lived up to the billing, there are still a few things that has been neglected for a while, and need to be patched up. My list is pretty much in line with Glenn's: the fighting engine, Thorne and Clement's commentary, and the still too magnetic puck. The last one is a biggie for me: The day I see teams chipping and chopping for loose pucks in the neutral zone is the day I'll be voting for the game as GOTY.

Make no mistake, I'm not saying I won't have a great time with NHL 13, because from everything I've seen I probably will. It's just that to be the Game of The Year, a game has to thoroughly simulate the sport that it's representing, and be the best one amongst a crowded field, at that. That's the main reason I'm saying mostly fiction-- it's because there are other games out there that do the job better for their respective sports.

What about you OS'ers? Will NHL 13 be the Sports Game of the Year in 2012?

I think the competition will be too tough this year for NHL to win. I just don't see it beating out FIFA, NBA, and The Show.

Until EA adds TeamBuilder to NHL, it will come in as a close second to FIFA for sports GOTY. The NHL has been around since 1917. Huge number of untapped classic teams from NHL, Canada Cup, Olympics and other leagues like ECHL would increase the fun and shelf life of NHL 13. NCAA Football and FIFA have fantastic wealth of user created teams available through TeamBuilder. So many great options for user created teams & leagues in NHL.

I would love to see both teambuilder and game face implemented across all EA Sports titles.

I don't consider online to be the end all and be all of gaming and don't judge the quality of sports games based on subjective experiences over crappy connections. In fact I hear nothing but complaints about the online experience from this and every other sports forum.

The gameplay depth and authentic presentation are the only qualities I think should be considered for GOTY. The fact your game might lag while taking a basket against a cheeser doesn't change a thing really.

Yeah, but online could be put in with gameplay depth. It is the one area NHL actually has the upper hand on the competition. If EA had really revamped the entire Presentation as well this year I might have given them the nod. They did alot though, so I completely understand. I just don't see it this year.

I will say no. I think NBA 2K13 looks to have the edge so far. The difference between NBA 2K and NHL for past few years is that 2K delivered a strong gameplay while adding few goodies making it more enjoyable while EA as offered us a bunch of goodies trying to make us forget about brutal AI.

Maybe NHL will get the nod in the end, but I doubt it. On top of it, 2K had to work thinking about EA making a comeback on the basketball market. EA team doesn't have any pressure on the hockey market to deliver the best they can, they are alone!

Like the real NHL, I'll be locked out to start the season. I'll wait if this time around, all the PR and Marketing EA made about NHL 13 is there or if it's like NHL 12, PR and Marketing only...

I think this game is already the sports video game of the year based off the demo.

With the true broadcast cam that has been implemented so well etc this is a no brainier now.

Its what the game NEEDED...

and it got it

the gameplay etc was already better than most game already

I'll say after playing the demo that this has a chance to be Game of the Year. It isn't a front-runner in my opinion but it sure has a chance if the features we haven't gotten to try yet play out.

I would say however, that this is definitely the most improved game of the year. Granted, it did have a lot of areas that needed to be improved upon. But when you look at all of the features we have been hearing so much about, I would have to say EAC has certainly gone above and beyond what was expected of them in one cycle.
