NBA 2K12: Top Five Players by Position

NBA 2K12 released two weeks ago, and we know most of you are enjoying it, despite its many online issues. This week we wanted to discuss the top player at each position. Arguments can go on for days about what player is the best at each position, so this list might be differ from others. Hopefully this list will help out newcomers to the series, or get a few conversations going with fellow OSers.

Point Guard - Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls)

In last year's game, Rose could score the points you needed and make the spectacular pass, but in NBA 2K12, he's an all around better player. Featuring an "A+" in handling and a solid "A" in basketball I.Q., Rose is now one of the few players in 2K12 that can win a game single handedly. Rose can pull up and take a jump shot, or blow by his defender to make the game-winning layup. He is the true essence of what a point guard means to a team. He runs Chicago's offense with such grace, and can turn a game around on a dime for you both online and offline. All of that is why Rose is the best point guard in2K12.

Honorable Mention: Chris Paul (New Orleans Hornets)

Shooting Guard - Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles Lakers)

The shooting guard position was essentially a toss-up between Kobe Bryant and Dwayne Wade. Kobe eventually won out. He has a 90 rating on offense and 86 rating on defense, which doesn't seem all too high for the Black Mamba, but the Lakers are used by a lot of online players out there because of Kobe Bryant. He might not be as quick or agile as Wade, but he's one of the most clutch players in 2K12, which can come in handy in close 4th-quarter games. Kobe is arguably the best all-around player in the game, and with his "A-" inside/outside scoring, he can easily drop 30 every night. Playing defense against Kobe is almost impossible to do, as he's so unpredictable with what he can do when he has the ball in his hand. Kobe is garnered as one of the best players in the NBA 2K series every year, and the year 2011 is no different.

Honorable Mention: Dwayne Wade (Miami Heat)

Small Forward - LeBron James (Miami Heat)

LeBron James might get some flak in real life, but in 2K12, he is one of the most used players. Both his inside and outside scoring is an "A-", which translate into a 94 overall offensive rating. James can shoot the ball from pretty much anywhere on the court, and can easily execute on the pick and roll or give and go. He's also very reliable at the point guard position, running the offense for the Heat. He has an "A" handling rating and an overall defensive rating of 86. His defesne will help create blocked shots and steals, which can translate into easy, quick fastbreak opportunities.

Honorable Mention: Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City Thunder)

Power Forward - Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas Mavericks)

The 2011 NBA Finals MVP is arguably one of the best players in 2K12. Most people will say Nowitzki doesn't have spectacular ball skills, and honestly, he doesn't. He is, however, a great post-up player with an overall "A" for Inside Scoring and can be a nuisance for your opponent inside the paint with his seven-foot frame. Having the ability to shoot from anywhere on the court, Nowitzki is one of the best pure shooters in the game with an "A+" in Outside Scoring. He's one of the few power forward's who can shoot the ball from anywhere on the court, making it easy for you to score on your opponent. He's also exceptional at drawing fouls. Perform a pump fake on your opponent, and most of the time Nowitzki will draw the foul. The last few years, Nowitzki was mentioned as a good power forward, but never as the best. Well, things change

Honorable Mention: Amare Stoudemire (New York Knicks)

Center - Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic)

Howard is, of course, a scoring machine, but he's also a defensive wrecking ball, with an overall 95 rating on defense. His inside presence is what will help you win games. With his incredible blocking and rebounding (99 rating) skills, and not to mention his "A+" post defense rating, D12 will be your cornerstone. The pure strength Howard possesses is astonishing, and that will be sure to help you bring in some boards in NBA 2K12. Be sure to be careful, though, as Howard is prone to getting fouls called on him, so don't be too antsy when a player goes up for a shot. But let's not forget the offensive prowess Howard also possesses. He has an "A" in Inside Scoring, and is one of the best post-up players in the game. Call for Howard to post up down low, and expect to have that play be successful for you many times over. All of this is what ultimately earned Dwight Howard the honor of best center in NBA 2K12.

Honorable Mention: Andrew Bogut (Milwaukee Bucks)

Final Thoughts

All of the players mentioned might be obvious choices, but that still doesn't take away from how good they are in the game. Debates could be made for hours about who is the best at each position, but after playing NBA 2K12 for a little over a week, I decided to go with the five listed in this article. Be sure to check back into Operation Sports next week as we reveal the top five unknown superstars in NBA 2K12.

Feel free to share your thoughts on what you think is the best player at each position.

Usually I think this forum is filled with guys who know basketball and it's players, but reading this just makes me shake my head, this some bandwagon stuff just cuz Durant is hot right now, and everyone hatin on LBJ, all KD is now and ever will be is a pure scorer and nothing else, while LeBron has the potential to be the greatest all around player of all time, if he gets his swag back on track...

any arguments wanna be sent my way, refer to this 1 simple stat that tells all, only 2 players in history have averaged 25, 7, 7 throughout their career, they would be LeBron and Big O..
so how is a guy who only knows how to put the ball in the hoop better than the best all around player to ever play the game, please infrickindulge me ?

KD is gonna win scoring titles and always be mentioned with names of great scorers like Tracy Mcgrady, Allen Iverson, etc... or would you wanna go down and mentioned with names like Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, this is where Lebron is headed.... I know my choice for sure
"LeBron has the potential to be the greatest all around player of all time..."

Even KD is my fav player and Lebron is my most hated player. I think Lebron should be rated higher than KD. I think Lebron should be 97 not 98. If its 98 its like he is better than most of the legends.

lol @ Al Bundy! seriously tho both guys are great players. I recently read an article where ESPN actually debated who was better between Lebron and KD. I dont know if you meant it like that but to act like you cant even compare the two or KD doesnt belong in the convo with Lebron?? Na b Durant is a top five player and only 23! I agree Lebron is better all around but with Durant still improving....hes right there nippin at Lebron heels. I didnt even bring up the 4th quarter issues lol

Its funny how everyone is putting KD over Lebron but when has KD been a defensive threat. Yes, he is long and can stop jump shots but Bron can stop any shot and has proven it. He has gone head up with some of the best competition and has beaten them with the Cavs and the Heat. Yes, KD has deeper range than Lebron but KD isn't an all around better player than Lebron. KD has faced the Lakers & Mavs and can't get over the hump with those two yet. The only team that can stop the Heat is the Heat.....

And before you say well the Heat have two superstars and a solid starter in Bosh...well so does the Thunder with a deeper bench.

Lebron over KD any and everyday...

Ok...lets compare the two...for Lebron's first 7 seasons he was on a team that (obviously) would have been a bottom feeder/lottery winner every year without him. He took the Cavs further than the Cavs could go with MJ himself on the court. Basically torched the Pistons in two playoff series in a row w/ on giving them a shot at the title. Two time MVP, multiple all star appearances, and probably one of the toughest players to guard one on one (with the exception of Paul Pierce(who takes a huge hit in the scoring department everytime he is matched up with Lebron)) He was the CLEAR leader of his team and had half the talent on those rosters than KD.

While I can admit KD is good Top 5 is a push because he isn't...ESPN Top Rankings is not a good comparison to the BEST players in the league. KD is a Top ten talent but much like Melo is only a true scoring machine. Sorry.....LBJ is miles ahead of KD...that is not saying KD will never be considered the best player in the future. And his stock will only take a hit if he can't at least get the Thunder in the Finals.

For those of you starting this debate about Durant and LeBron need to realize we are talking about the video game. This is not a discussion about who is actually better in real life.

I'm just going to quote this because maybe if it's here twice people will see it. Selective literacy on the internet is a pandemic.

In that case...

PG: Chris Paul. His 84 3pt rating makes all the difference in the world in deciding whether or not double teaming David West is a good idea...

HM: Derrick Rose. His 77 mid and 79 3pt makes him an inconsistent threat with his jumpshots. But get him a few easy layups and a couple of trips to the foul line? His jumper is straight cash.

SG: Kobe. His post game is ridiculous. Coupled with the fact that most Sg don't have the strength nor the post defense necessary to stop it? Makes Kobe the most complete SG in the game.

HM: Tyreke Evans. Don't laugh. A couple of OS'ers on here know just how dangerous Tyreke Evans is when going to the rim. Couple that with his insane crossover/isomotion ability and one of the quickest releases in the game making it nearly unblockable? Yeah. Tyreke is a problem.

SF: Carmelo Anthony. Bigger, Stronger Kobe with a better 3pt rating. He is simply unfair in this game.

HM: Rudy Gay. Don't laugh at this either. Dude is absolutely insane when going to the rack, and he catches on fire very very very quickly. Hit a couple of midrange jumpers, and I bet you at the end of the day he'll end up with 40+ points.

PF: Dirk. His post fadeaway is simply cheese

HM: Kevin Garnett. HIS post fadeaway is simply cheese

C: Dwight Howard. Simply unfair. Can't be guarded one on one. He will simply bully his way to within 3-5 feet and dunk it. Everytime. EVERY. TIME. Asssuming he establishes good post position first, but then...that's what the agressive backdown is for....

HM: DeMarcus Cousins. Mini Dwight. With a mid range game. His mid range is a 75. Simply unguardable if he's facing a scrub center. Expect him to get 20+ points.
D Cuz is the man! just sayin

Well that would be true if we were talking about ficitional characters but we are not most sports games are just smaller duplicates of their real life counterparts...so you really can't argue who's better if you don't compare them in real life. It's not like we are trying to see whose more bad *** between Marcus Fenix and Master Chief.

The ratings for each players reflects (in some cases loosely) how they play in real life. So it really makes no sense to compare or debate the two soley off of video games if you can't compare the two in real life. But if that's the case Lebron is still better than KD.
