NBA 2K CHALLENGE: If you had 1 suggestion, just 1, for NBA 2k13: what would it be?
Posted on February 12, 2012 at 12:40 AM.
[moved from the forums with permission]

Here's a toughie.

There are lots of things wrong with 2k12 and there's just so many things that tick everyone off...

But if you were allowed to voice one thing, just one, for 2K to see, what would it be?

You have one suggestion. Just one. Use it wisely. Use it on something that they'll neglect. Use it on a deal breaker for you!

Keep it simple, like a sentence or two (perhaps follow my example and elaborate in a separate paragraph).

Imagine if you had 1 minute to pitch your idea to a business executive, aka an elevator pitch

Ready? Set! GO!!!

Here's what I think:

Lots of people ere are clear fundamental flaws in the gameplay. The freelancing sucks big time. The CPU does make adjustments but this needs to be fine tuned. The passing. That's three things right there already...however...

...because I know 2k is already going to look at gameplay, I'm not going to use my one suggestion for stuff that they'll probably improve...(plus sliders help a bunch). I'm going to use it one something that they'll definitely overlook and will definitely come back and piss me off again.

Which is why my suggestion will be......*drum roll*...

Reinvent player ratings progression (read: potential and how the potential rating works) in Association/My Player mode
(for everybody, meaning generated draft picks and existing players).

Why?
It really ruins the game after a few years with a boatload of players having 80 ratings (causing role players to be useless). Plus, its super predictable since it works pretty much like a ratings cap(Hello!? Busts exist! Potential is potential but its frequently not realized.). Give it an element of randomness (maybe so that our training camps actually mean something)! Plus, I'm almost certain 2k will overlook this, again.

REMEMBER GUYS: Keep it simple, like a sentence or two (perhaps follow my example and elaborate in a separate paragraph).

The only thing I don't really like with this game is how hard it is to blow by someone with just a nice crossover. It happens all the time in the nba where the player does a simple move and explodes to the rim and either gets an eay lay in or meets a post defender. In 2k12 this just doesn't happen.

Cpu defense biting on quality crossovers and jab steps.

I say "cpu" because players online, playing against the players who enjoy the challenge of 'on-ball' defense, actually shift over on-ball , even just slightly, on a good hesitation crossover which allows the offensive player to attack the basketball, draw help defenders and make a play by dishing the ball the an open shooter or slasher; however, playing against those who like to play off-ball, means you have to go up against the cpu defender. Granted, there are times you get by the cpu defender simply cause he reached but not cause he bit off a quick, sharp D Rose or D Wade crossover or even dropped a step to the side off of a hard jab step allowing you to make progress toward the basket.

More contro over passing, maybe a system like in FIFA where I can either have assisted/automated choices or full-control over whether the player attempts a lob-,chest-,bounce- or flashy-pass.

You actually nailed it. The problem is progression. No guys every fail to fullfill their potential. I'm seven years into a my player career and Anthony Randolph is an 89 overall and the 34th best player in the league. The way the rosters START there are about 8 guys better than an 89 overall. Jrue Holiday is the best point guard in the game in 2017 at 94 overall... Every team is loaded, good players stay good too long. SOME guys need career ending injuries. SOME players need to go from an 80 one year to a 65. It happens. It's not my job to figure out how to make it work 2K, but I know this isn't SIM basketball.

I agree with the progression comments. I personally love the defensive aspects in 2k12, I think it's very authentic although not as easy as in past games. If I had to change one thing though, I would say the post move controls still aren't intuitive.

I would also have to say better CPU reactions to crossovers, jab steps, etc. Players that heavily rely on their explosiveness and quickness to score in real life are severely handicapped in 2k IMO. If I run an Isolation with a Chris Paul or Derrick Rose, I should be able to get by my guy pretty easily because these type of players are virtually unguardable.

I agree with most of these especially the inpenetrable wall defenders are. But my is these horrible animations. It takes control completely out of your hands. Its amazing how Nate Robinson can dunk over a center or forward but when my 6'8" small forward with 99 very and 85 dunk drives to the basket they easily get bumped out the way creating a shot altering animation.

Also ref awareness, everything is a blocking foul nothing is a charge. You tap the CPU they get a call, you get knocked down it's a no call. Also, over the back calls most of the time the player called didn't even jump. I had a PG get called for it and he wasn't even in the paint he didn't even go for the board.

Create-a-Team....ONLINE.

This would be very similar to NCAA Football's TeamBuilder feature, but more in-depth.

You could choose to create an expansion OR relocate a team.
So when you go into Association, if you have chosen to relocate, there will be an option to have relocated teams or original teams. If you turn them on, then that team will replace the original team (so you don't end up with duplicate players). So for instance, you could relocate the New Orleans Hornets to Seattle. Online, you would create the jerseys, team name (which would obviously be the Super Sonics), and for the roster you could import the NOH roster to the now Seattle team. This way, you would not end up with two Eric Gordons in the same Association.

There would have to be a limit of teams in the league so if you imported expansion teams, you could only import so many. My limit for the league would be 50 teams. I know it sounds like a lot, but a 50 team schedule would look like this:

- 5 teams per division. 5 divisions in the Western Conference. 5 divisions in the Eastern Conference.

- You play each team in your division 3 times.
- You play all of the other teams in your conference 2 times.
- This is where it gets a little tricky... You play every team in the opposite conference 1 time, with the exception of 5 teams. You will play one team from the other conferences' divisions 2 times.

- For example: A team from the West would play the other four teams in their division 3 times. They will play ALL of the other teams in the West 2 times. They will play one team from each of the divisions in the East 2 times. They will then play every other team in the East one time. ((It adds up to 82 games))

- Now, the playoffs will then have 16 teams per conference. 32 teams make the playoffs. The first round would be a best of 5, and the next four rounds would be best of 7. So really, all you add is one, five game playoff series.

Now as far as creating the team, we would have to have access to EVERYTHING. Team name, logo, colors, jersey design, court, arena, arena name, etc.

Stop taking away options that were once there.

In 2011 you could easily incorporate legends 2K12 no.
Used to be able to have black or white socks but not on the last few iterations.
Used to be able to change their ages but not in 2K12.

2K absolutely has to address its online modes. Bring back Crew, make online association more fleshed out w/ better options for commissioners to customize leagues, and solidify the servers once and for all. Quite frankly online has been a PR disaster this year, to the point where 2K will lose a lot of customers to the competition if it isn't improved on in 2K13.
