So I was able to find a Eric Staal for 11k and 22 games. He was switched to the Dallas Stars but that doesn't bother me as I was not going to build a Carolina line. Big Staal will center my Flyers line! so I will give it a week hoping to find a cheap change team for the Flyers... but him being a Stars is helping me out at the moment as I am trying to win that Pacific division tournament.

This purchase completes my wishlist regarding my forwards... at least until I start going for the very expensive superstars like Toews, Crosby or Gretzky.

So here is my lineup for the foreseeable future:

Tatar - Backstrom - Iginla

JVR - Staal - Voracek
Ladd - Little - Wheeler
McGinn - O'Reilly - Hedjuk

I am quite happy and confident with this group. I'll still struggle against teams stacked with Gold players but against pretty much everybody else, I won't be easy to beat.

So it's time to turn our attention to the backend... and that won't be as easy.

Right now, I play with:

Ekman-Larsson - Klesla
Hedman - Vlasic (or Alzner or Demers or Blum)
Goligoski - Babchuk (or Hannan)

A few guys on my shop list: Subban (around 15k), Letang (50k at least), Edler (12-15k) and Kronwall (?).

I'd like to keep Ekman & Klesla, they play very well... and Hedman is very good also so we need to upgrade the other 3.

In goal, for now, I am going with Brodeur, LaBarbera & Karlson but I guess we will need to think about an upgrade at some point. I think I want to wait until my D is settled though then I can decide on an elite goalie that will fit with them.

It took a few games but I found out how to use Backstrom... you need to make very hard passes with him. It changes how to play as you need to start the passing action a bit earlier but now things are rolling with him! So I switched him to the Flames and he is now centering my first line between Tatar & Iginla.

I made a few acquisitions during the weekend: JVR, Jeff Skinner & Marty Brodeur. JVR is boosting my Flyers line seriously and I just need now to find someone better than Max Talbot to work with JVR and Voracek. I really like Eric Staal so I think this is where this will go. Saving the 15k needed for a Stall, switching him to Philly and there is my 2nd line. 3rd line would be Jets and 4th Avs so we shall be set upfront!

It will be time to focus back on the D though I like what I have back there... Ekman-Larsson & Klesla are a great match and I am very comfortable playing with Goligoski - Babchuk. I really just need a complement for Hedman. Subban maybe after I gather another 15k? Letang is also on my wishlist but he goes for around 50k recently so thats a long wait.

I did resell Skinner as I wasnt liking him too much and I am trying to sell David Perron but my wanted price is too high at the moment.

I wasn't planning to make any purchase two night ago but there were bargains all over!

First, Steve Mason, 85 goalie for 350pts with 10 games contract. And since I have lots of goalie consumables for some reason, I jacked him up to 89 for the next 5 games... That should shore up my goaltending situation until next week.

My team is a bit too grinder style with Ladd, McGinn, David Jones, Brandon Read, etc. so I am looking to add some snipers and finishers... and David Perron fell in my lap! Prices for him recently have been in the 3000-3500 range but I got him for 2000pts for 11 games. Not sure which line he will play on but it should be a good addition.

And finally the deal of the week: Victor Hedman, 84 dman with a 30 game contract for 400pts! I haven't played with him yet but he is tough when playing against and with such a big body and 88 speed, he's got to be at least able to hold his own... and even if I don't end up keeping him, 30 games for 400 pts is still a steal.

I only played one game (3-1 win over BOS) and spent half my cash but it was a good night.

I still haven't played with Hedman as I am trying to win the Pacific tournament so I need my 2 San Jose dmen (Vlasic & Demers) in there but I can't wait to try him out.

I did however create a new #1 line after buying Nicklas Backstrom for 5900pts (24 games). I put him between David Perron & Jakub Voracek. I played only a couple of games so far but it's not going great: I can't get Backstrom to get in open space and his passing ability hasn't been great... and I am not playing too well with Perron. Not enough speed to get around the D down the wing so I try to wrap around but rarely are Backstrom or Voracek open.

Let's see how it goes in the next few games but it might have been a mistake here. I should have kept my cash for someone better than Backstrom... like Eric Staal, Giroux or even Toews.

Here is what happened so far

I got 85 Blake Wheeler in a gold pack so decided to go for a Jets line. I got Bryan Little & Andrew Ladd for less than 1000pts each then added Antropov & Burmistrov when they were cheap and with many games on their contracts... I am still hoping for a cheap Evander Kane but I probably will pay the 10-15000pts for him soon if I don't catch a deal... Anyways, I am ready to go to war with Ladd - Little - Wheeler. It might not be the most sexy line but I will be competitive against pretty much anybody with those guys on the ice.

Among my gold packs, I ended up with 3 "change team" cards, 1 LA Kings which I resold for 1850pts and 2 Calgary cards... I started checking what was out there for the Flames and got Mikael Backlund, Curtis Glencross & David Moss for cheap before adding Olli Jokinen for 600pts or so. Tomas Tatar is one of my favorite player so I put the captain tag on him and applied some coaching cards to him before switching him to the Flames now as an 84... all the while keeping an eagle eye for the big boy: Jarome Iginla. It took about a week but I finally managed to get him at 6000pts, a reasonable enough price for my 1st line winger. So now my first line is Tatar - Backlund/Jokinen - Iginla

My D was a bit unsettled until I got Oliver Ekman-Larsson in my last gold pack. He is only rated 84 but I used him in my franchise and he plays very well so I got Rotislav Klesla who is a huge physical presence to be my first pairing. My Panthers duo is next with Bieksa and either Keaton Ellerby or Jason Garrison. Finally, since I kept checking the Flames looking for Iginla, I got Scott Hannan, Anton Babchuk (another guy from my franchise who I play great with) and Alex Goligoski (cheaper than usual since he was switched to Calgary) for my 3rd pairing.

At this point, look out for either players on the same teams to raise chemistry or just players you like/want to play with. I ended up getting Ryan O'Reilly and Jakub Voracek. That got me to add some cheap options from the Avs (McGinn, Jones, Hejduk) & Philly (Read, Talbot, Schenn). I especially like McGinn: physical, some quickness, makes nice passes; another good find!

Competition is fierce right now when I play against NHL teams, it's really a coin toss who will win so now it's time to save for the big pieces: Giroux & JVR to take Voracek to the next level? Landeskog to make the Avs line #2 and the Jets line a strong #3? Getting whoever else is discounted and spend the money on a "change team" card? At some point, I will also need to save up for an elite goalie... and those aren't cheap! but you can't keep relying on 82-84s if you want to win.

As always, I keep checking auctions for reasonable contracts & training cards to keep my consumables pile full and ready.

So here is my team as of 03/11 with about 6000pts in bank

Tatar - Backlund - Iginla
Ladd - Little - Wheeler
McGinn - O'Reilly - Jones
XXX (still rotating a cast of cheap 80s here)

Ekman-Larsson - Klesla
Ellerby - Bieksa
Goligoski - Babchuk

LaBarbera - Poulin

... slowly crawling my way up the leaderboards and awaiting the time I can add my first allstar!

This is my first year playing HUT and I have to say I am enjoying it much more than I thought... and about 300% more than I ever enjoyed Madden Ultimate Team and much more than I enjoyed my NHL offline GM franchise earlier this year.
Here is the core of my starter team I used for a good 2 weeks gathering points on a daily basis

Higgins - Malhotra - Hansen
Abdulkader - Emmerton - Eaves
Tatar - Cormier - Machacek

Ellerby - Bieksa
De Haan - Donovan
Blum - Tanev

A good recruiting year for UNLV as they ended with the 71st class and manage to acquire two high skill position players as 5* wide receiver Trae Lemon and 4* QB Isaac Thomas. The team was also able to fill up most of its needs to replace a huge class of 16 seniors departing.

Progress was made in 2013 with the UNLV Rebels as they ended the year 6-6, their best results since 2009.

Nick Montana did not disappoint in his first year in Las Vegas throwing for over 4100 yards, 5th among college football QBs. Montana showed great poise behind a weak offensive line that may well be even weaker next year.

Tim Cornett accumulated over a 1000 yards rushing in his senior year but much more was expected of the texan tailback. Difficulties for the offensive line to open up holes and the defensive struggles often force the team to focus on the passing attack instead of letting Cornett set up on the ground. With both Cornett and 2nd string Bradley Randle set to graduate, there will be a wide open battle at the running back position for next season.

Two Rebels finished with over a thousand yards this year, 6'5" wide out Kurt Davis and tight end Chris Hawk who lead the team with 12 TDs. Underwhelming seasons from Dres Anderson and Marcus Sullivan can however explain the lofty stats of Davis & Hawk as QB Montana could not rely on his first 2 options on a consistent basis. With all players set to return except maybe Anderson who could declare for the draft, the Rebels are hoping for increased cohesion between their star quarterback and his receiving corps.

Rebels flying too high stumble versus Colorado State

After upset wins versus Hawaii and Nevada, a stingy Rams defense brought the Rebels back down to earth in game 6 of the year. Faced with unusual schemes and and a strong outside blitz and containment, the UNLV offense never could find its groove and Pete Thomas showed why many consider him the best QB of the Mountain West by going 26 of 44 for 403 yards and 3 TDs.
