Who can stop the Rebels? In-state rival Wolf Pack certainly thought they could in the 39th annual Battle for Nevada, a game the Reno team had not lost since 2003 and for which the #24 ranked team was prepared. Nick Montana and the UNLV Rebels had other ideas however and threw for 445 years in the air to defeat the ranked team 42-35 in an overtime thriller.

The Hawaii Warriors and UNLV Rebels battled this Sunday at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas and neither team was ready to give up an inch. It took a 241 yards, 2 TDs performance from Marcus Sullivan on top of strong performance from Kurt Davis & Tim Cornett for the Rebels to escape with the win.

An uneventful game at Sam Boyd Stadium for the Rebels 3rd game of the season as they completely dominated the San Jose State Spartans, leading 42-10 after 3rd quarter before resting most of their starters. Nick Montana continued his progression by throwing for 307 yards and 4 TDs, a dominating performance nicely complimented by 134 yards of ground attack from Tim Cornett.

At the end of the first quarter, the Arizona Wildcats probably thought the new Rebels were pretty much the same as the old ones and nobody would fault them for it as the Wildcats were leading 21-0 and had already sacked Nick Montana 5 times. The Rebels however were not ready to give up as both sides of the ball took charge: the defense held the Wildcats to 7 points for the next three quarters while the offense shifted focus from a struggling run offense to spread the ball in the air. By the end of the 4th quarter, the score was tied at 28 and overtime proved as intense as both teams scored on their first drive before the Wildcats managed to stop the Rebels on 4th and 12th to sneak away with the win.

Nick Montana continued to show tremendous leadership as he kept the Rebels huddle under control even as the nasty quick defensive line of the Wildcats made small work of the Rebels offensive line. Montana was sacked ten time throughout the game on top of being rushed at numerous other times. The young QB still managed to make many beautiful throws including two TD passes to Chris Hawk and a spectacular hail mary bomb to Michael Sullivan on the first drive of the 4th quarter to bring the Rebels within 7 points of Arizona

The UNLV Rebels started the year in exciting fashion by winning their first season opener since 2009 and a win against Sacramento State. This year's win against Minnesota is much more significant however as the level of opposition was not negligeable and it gives hope to a program who has not had more than 5 wins since the 2002 season.

Junior Transfer Nick Montana did not take long to show what a talented QB means to a football team and lead the Rebels calmly down the field many times and providing encouragement to his receivers who dropped many easy passes. The son of football legend Joe Montana finished the game with 246 passing yards with 1 TD on 14 completed passes and 30 attempts.

However, the offensive hero for the Rebels was senior tailback Tim Cornett who ran for 244 yards including a 82 yard sideline trot to end the game with 3 rushing touchdowns. Tight End Chris Hawk also contributed heavily with over a hundred yard receiving.

Here is our class of Freshmen for 2013: 9 offensive and 10 defensive prospects. 9 of those prospects were redshirted for their first taste of college life.

The 2012 recruiting class must be considered a disappointment for UNLV as they did not manage to attract any top notch talent to their desert oasis. The team spent much energy wooing high calibre prospects but ended up always 2nd or 3rd by decision time. WR Martin Gandy from Ashland, OR and MLB Dion Lee from Adamsville, AL so far appear as the most talented players of the class.

Even though they do not appear ready to play immediately, the Rebels did prepare for the departure of 6 offensive linemen following the season by signing 6 offensive line prospects.

In the final year of head coach Bobby Hauck's 3 year contract, the Rebels showed major improvement but the results did not transpire much into the standings as the team ended the year 3-9, only one more win than the previous two years. The Rebels were however much more competitive this year, losing to Hawaii in overtime and forcing the Boise State Broncos to score 17 points in the last 3 minutes to avoid a loss.

With Caleb Herring transferring away and Nick Montana unable to play due to transfer rules, the Rebels were very thin at QB with only sophomores Nick Sherry and Taylor Barnhill on the roster. Sherry showed promise last year but a major back injury cut his season short. The scrambler from California was still sidelined this year but managed to play in 9 of the Rebels' game, accumulating 1692 passing yards while keeping defenses on their toes with his scrambling abilities. He ended the year with 9 TD passes and 6 interceptions. After disappointing the coaching staff with his lack of improvement in 2011, Taylor Barnhill certainly made up for it in 2012 as he excelled in the four games he started, throwing 10 TDs and completing 47.1% of his passes. While the team adjusted to his pocket passer skills, Barnhill was not afraid to scramble ahead with his bulky body and his ability to find TE Hawk in traffic allowed him to pull off an upset win vs Air Force.

Tim Corbett continued his development in his junior year by combining for an average of 8.7 yard per carry and scoring 7 TDs in only 65 rushing attempts. Corbett also became a vocal leader for the team but a major collarbone injury cut his season short. Bradley Randle took over the workhorse role and manage 5 TDs on the ground and was a constant threat for outlet passes.

2012 saw the emergence of Kurt Davis and Trey Mays as main targets. Marcus Sullivan was expected to be the receiver number 1 but the 5'9 sophomore from North Las Vegas struggled with more attention from defensive backs and ended the year with a disapointing 450 yards and only 1 TD. Sophomore Kurt Davis became the favorite target as the season progressed and ended the year with 6 TDs and an average of 22.5 yard per reception.

However, the real emerging player among the receiving corps was freshman tight end Chris Hawk who provided the Rebels with a big target in the middle and a sneaky ability to get past safeties for big gains. Buck struggled early in the year with numerous dropped passes but additional work in practice paid dividend and the 6'2 245 lbs Oregonian gained confidence as the year went along and his first college season was a success with 880 total yards and 8 TDs.

With the Rebels unable to find any starters for their offensive line among the 2011 recruiting class, the team saw some minor improvement through development of linemen but the presence of Hawk and Cornett really allowed the skilled players to bail out many linemen with lost battles in the trenches.

2013 will be a make or break year for the Rebels as the team will field an offensive line filled with seniors and will see the arrival of Nick Montana and WR Dres Anderson on the field after sitting out due to transfers. Tim Cornett will also be a major part of the offense in his senior year as he will try to prove he belongs in the conversation for best running back of the MWC.

**** Allright, we are now caught up with this dynasty so there will be more entries and details from this point forward.

UNLV Rebels ended the 2011 season with a record of 2-10, same as the previous year.

Freshman Quarterback Nick Sherry was surprisingly given the starter's job and showed some promising signs before a back injury sidelined him for the 2nd half of the season. Getting back his old job, Caleb Herring developed a strong rapport with his wide receiver and coupled with his scrambling abilities, the Rebels were suddenly giving headaches to defensive coordinators around the Mountain West. An extremely porous offensive line however prevented many drives from ending with more than field goals and the frustration spilled over with an on-field confrontation in the season finale between QB Herring and his linemen.

Sophomore running back Tim Cornett was heavily relied on and did not disapoint by amassing 937 yards and 6 TDs while managing to take the pressure from the QB and offensive line. Such a heavy workload did however cause a few physical breakdowns for the 6'0 tailback but Bradley Randle also showed some promise in relief.

The wide receiver corps was dominated by seniors Philip Payne & Michael Johnson but their numbers were lackluster and by the end of the season, the coaching staff started preparing for next year already by giving more playing time to sophomores. Small speedster Marcus Sullivan and tall lanky Kurt Davis gave enough production that the Rebels should feel comfortable about being able to replace the soon departing seniors.

Tight Ends showed itself to be a major area of need for the Rebels as none of the 3 seniors on the team managed to grab the wide-open job. The absence of a quality tight end both as a blocker and a checkdown passing option was identified as a major issue with the Rebels offense.

----

The offseason turned out to be full of surprises for the Rebels this year, mainly at the QB position. First, following a season in which he was benched in favor of a true freshman at the beginning and emerged as a dual threat by the end of the season, QB Caleb Herring decided for a change of scenery and transfered out of the Mountain West, joining conference rival New Mexico. Less than a week later, UNLV found a more than adequate replacement as Nick Montana, QB with the University of Washington committed to transfer to UNLV for next season. Citing a lack of playing time, the son of Joe Montana was ecstatic about the opportunity he would be given in Las Vegas.
