Last week EA released a news statement stating the J1 League, Japan’s top flight soccer league, would be featured in FIFA 17. On the surface it’s not surprising seeing as EA has been adding more and more licensed leagues to its FIFA franchise for the past few years. In typical OS fashion, let’s dive a little deeper to see what impact, if any, this has on consumers.

With the Copa America 2016 wrapped up and Euro 2016 in full swing, it’s time to dust off your copy of PES 2016 and play along with the action. When Konami announced its intentions with a downloadable Euro 2016 mode, gamers like myself were initially excited at the prospect of playing along with the real action. What could be more exciting than leading Wales through their first European competition in fifty years, or taking the reigns of Portugal and attempting to finally get Cristiano Ronaldo over the hump? But in what seems to be a trend with Konami, the game released with outdated rosters and unlicensed national sides.

Thankfully the lads over at PES Universe stepped up, as is the case more often than not, and provided PS4 players with a complete file full of all the outstanding teams and managers necessary to make your virtual Euro 2016 experience as authentic as possible. Just take a look at this video created by the one and only Weedens featuring the excellent editing work done by the MidniteKid...

It’s a great time to be a soccer fan. Mornings and afternoons spent in France watching the 2016 Euro’s. Evenings spent with Copa America, taking it all in from the comfy confines of my couch. All the while my laptop sits next to me, as I in true American ADD fashion, scour the internet for any semblance of new information, or better yet, gameplay videos from FIFA 17. To my delight, news has been plentiful and gameplay videos are slowly starting to emerge. With a few days to digest all of this information, let’s take a look at the early features highlighted in FIFA 17.

With Pro Evolution Soccer (PES) 2016 being out for over six months, it’s time to compile our annual “PES Wishlist” for the upcoming release, PES 2017. After spending countless hours playing and scouring the internet, we’ve experienced the good, bad and ugly that PES 2016 offers. With eyes towards the future, let’s have a look at some key features we’d like to see added and/or improved upon for 2017.

Note – this isn’t an “end-all-be-all” list but rather a high-level rundown of some of common issues plaguing PES 2016 and where we’d like to see the game go in future iterations.

Active Soccer DX 2 is by no means a soccer simulation. Instead its focus is on fast paced, arcade action from a top-down view that utilizes the game’s simplistic control scheme. It’s because of this simplistic three-button control scheme that users are able to pick this title up and feel somewhat comfortable within hours and even minutes of play.

The game does provide a seven-step tutorial to help familiarize yourself with these controls, and even allows you to change the control scheme, but custom mapping was somehow excluded as the sprint button is mysteriously mapped to the “Y” button. Once you take the pitch, you’ll notice awkward animations and moments where the rules of soccer are blatantly ignored. As an overall theme, the developers missed out on a lot of bugs that can lead to head-scratching moments.

You read the buzz regarding FIFA and Pro Evolution Soccer (PES). Then you started to wake up early on Saturday mornings to check out English Premier League games. Slowly but surely the beautiful game dug its claws into you.

If that is the case for you, now is a great time to take advantage of sales and ply your trade on the pitch. But before you do that, it’s best to have a solid understanding of what will incur over the next 90 virtual minutes.

For simplicity's sake, I will separate this article into two areas:
  • Before the match
  • During the match

For as long as I’ve been playing sports games, I’ve been fascinated with the tracking of progress within career modes. From the early days of a black and white composition book to the more recent use of capture cards and video blogs, dynasty tracking has come a long way.

In this piece, I'll take a look at what makes for a good read, as well highlighting some of the more successful and popular dynasties on OS. Even though each dynasty is unique in its own way, there are some common characteristics that all successful dynasties share. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

It has been quite the year for Konami's PES 2016. After turning some heads with PES 2015, PES 2016 received positive reviews and created a strong buzz among footy enthusiasts. With Konami releasing PES 2016 earlier than FIFA 16, many players flocked to PES 2016 as their first 2016 footy experience. Some were elated at the upgrades within PES 2016 while others felt the game was incomplete in its then-current state.

In this article I'll dive into how the game has held up post-release.

Release week for any AAA sports titles on OS is mercurial to say the least. After the initial excitement of playing a new game dies down, the comments often turn negative as bugs, glitches and other oddities are discovered. In what seems like a disturbing trend, games are shipped now with more bugs than ever, especially as developers attempt to push the envelope with new modes and ideas. Inevitably, this leads to posters calling this year’s iteration “Madden 15.5” or “FIFA 15.5” and so on. Just as one thing leads to another, the next t

In a day and age where video games are supposed to mimic what we see on television, there's still a fine line between fun and realism that can make or break a sports title. At its core, PES 2016 achieves what it was set out to accomplish, a blend of realism (unique player ID, team styles, etc.) and fun (fast-paced action, highlights galore, etc.).

Trying to cram 90 minutes into a 10-25 minute experience can be challenging, especially in a sport where a good majority of the play is focused in the center of the field, ways away from either goal. Sure, PES 2016 suffers from inconsistent referees and animations that could be improved, but when it shines, it illuminates the screen.

Make no mistake about it, FIFA's stranglehold on exclusive licenses is a major reason why the series has enjoyed so much success since the launch of the Xbox 360 and PS3. The ability to pick it up and play as nearly all of your favorite clubs makes it a day-one purchase for so many of us footy enthusiasts. Combine that with stable online servers and modes galore, and it's no wonder why EA Canada has been the most praised EA development team over the last few years. Despite this stronghold, FIFA has still found a way to grow by expanding into the all-important US soccer market.

When I think back to the most enjoyable sports gaming experiences of my life I vividly recall two games:

-NCAA Football 11 Online Dynasty
-College Hoops 2K8 Offline Career Mode

Despite being wholly different games and sports, they both provided a level of enjoyment that's rarely been matched. College Hoops 2K8 gave players one of the deepest offline career modes to date. You could start your career in a small conference before using the Coaching Carousel to get your dream job. NCAA 11 took a fairly decent offline dynasty and took it all online. Battling for recruits and conference supremacy was ratcheted up a couple levels in an online setting.

When news began leaking out about PES 2016, most fans looked to the usual: gameplay enhancements, tweaks to Master League, and of course, online stability. Become a Legend (BAL) sadly fell by the wayside once again. For a mode that was once the torch-bearer for single player footy career modes, the mode has become stagnant and is in dire need of a makeover.Read More - Improving Be a Legend in PES

FIFA's Ultimate Team (FUT) has a bad reputation when it comes to the games more traditional, offline players. Scour our forum hours, or even minutes after EA Canada releases a "stability patch" for FUT, and you will see comments along the lines of "FUT is all EA cares about," "Career Mode is once again getting the short-end-of-the-stick", etc. While it's hard to argue against that logic, there's no denying the popularity of FUT and for good reason. Ultimate Team can be addictive fun alternative to battling the CPU's sometimes stagnant offline AI. It's with this in mind that we'll take a look at three reasons for offline players to take the plunge into the card mode.
