Competition is good. It holds game developers accountable, inspires new ideas and forces companies to push the envelope year after year. NBA 2K has long been one of my favorite franchises due to my love for basketball, and by extension simulation basketball videogames. As good as it has been however, the series can get a lot better. Though NBA 2K lacks significant competition in its own niche at the time, there is plenty of competition in the genre of sports gaming as a whole.
Borrowing ideas from other sports games (some of their own), and implementing them in the context of NBA 2K, produced the popular My Career mode (via MLB the Show) and the exciting addition of Signature Skills (via All Pro Football). What are some other aspects NBA 2K can borrow to create a better experience? I have a few ideas.

Recently the guys at 2K revealed all 31 Signature Skills found in NBA 2K13 and their descriptions. There were some who were pessimistic about how these skills would affect gameplay, but after having learned the details, I for one am even more excited about their inclusion in 2K13 than I was prior.
The Signature Skills concept has been done before in other sports games such as All-Pro Football 2K8, but the idea lends itself so seamlessly to the basketball genre that it can be a huge evolutionary step in how we play basketball games going forward.

The NBA offseason to this point has been rich with player movement and surprises. While the acquisition of Dwight Howard and Steve Nash by LA and Ray Allen by the Heat captured much of the headlines, several teams in the league have made significant strides in improving their team and their outlook for the 2012-2013 Season.
This article explores five teams other than the obvious top teams in the league the past couple of years that will be worth a look in NBA 2K13.

When I pop NBA 2K13 into my XBOX 360 come October 2nd, one of the first things I’ll do is what I do every year, go to practice mode and check out the new rookies. In another life, I’d be an NBA scout. I’ve always enjoyed watching players progress from high school to college and analyzing what type of player they might be in the NBA. In the game, it’s fun for me to see how well rookies are captured appearance, ability and style-wise. And with the announcement of perhaps my most anticipated addition to NBA 2K13, Signature Skills, it will be even more interesting this year.
Rookies in NBA 2K have always been rated according to a specific scale which often does not do justice to their capabilities on the court. Granted a part of rating them is predicting how well their game will translate to the NBA, there are certain abilities that players just possess. Signature Skills could be the compromise which allows rookies to play like their real life counterparts though they may be rated conservatively.
The 2012 draft was deep with good ballplayers and there a couple of guys I’m excited about using in NBA 2K13. Here are my numbers ten through six most anticipated rookies, along with what I predict their Signature Skills might be.

What a difference a year makes. For this basketball fan, last summer was painful. The NBA was in the midst of a lockout, the summer league was cancelled, free-agency was on hold and the prospect of missing a full season was all too real. By stark contrast, the Nike-penned motto "basketball never stops" which was conceived during that lockout, seems to be the theme this summer. Less than a month after the 2012 season ended, summer league began and then Olympic basketball shortly thereafter. With the Olympics now over, what has often been one of my favorite times of the year now begins: NBA 2K season.
The NBA 2K franchise currently stands at the pinnacle of video game basketball and, until NBA Live returns, has only itself for competition. This is a challenge the games’ developers seem to acknowledge, as they have repeatedly communicated a refusal to rest on their laurels but rather to push the envelope with each consecutive release. So what type of a difference has a year made for NBA 2K13? We are slowly finding out the details and they seem pretty legit.
So what am I looking for exactly? Here's my list of things that NBA 2K13 will have to do in order to 'win' this season for me...
