Pardon our tardiness, but at last, we are ready to announce the round 3 and round 4 winners of our EA Sports Performance Index Premier League Jersey giveaway.
For round 3, the Easter double fixtures, the goalkeeper who gained the most points in the PPI was Wojciech Szczesny—probably because the gods wanted to test my vow that I would get his name right without resorting to copy and paste.
And for round 4, we have two players who gained the same amount of points: Thomas Vermaelen and Jonny Evans, who both gained 19 points in the index respectively. That, of course, means that folks who picked either player are entered into the draw.
So without hesitation, we have our two lucky winners:
- Week 3: sonatine73
- Week 4: NaturalSelected
For the rest of you, don’t forget to enter the PPI contest, opening later this week!

Of all the big sports, it seems hockey loves its character guys the most. And with the real playoffs rapidly approaching the horizon, perhaps this is a good time to explore some potential role player additions to your NHL 12 franchise if you team is a contender at the trade deadline.
Yes, everybody wants to trade for a superstar, but why not explore some lesser hyped players? Those that play on your third line who, come playoff time, can ultimately be the difference maker. After all, the Bruins didn't win because they went after a marquee name at the deadline. No, they got great help from the likes of Rich Peverley and Chris Kelly. And these character guys, hopefully, will give your team the push it needs to go all the way to lift Lord Stanley’s Cup.
In the world of NHL 12, many of these players can be had at the price of a decent prospect and middle pick. Is it worth it? Well, if your team is that close to winning it all, you owe it to yourself to go all out. Besides, it gives me a good reason to write this article.
Ultimately, when it comes to role players, there are two routes you can take: You can look for well-rounded players who do a little bit of everything, or you can grab a player who is good at one particular set of attributes. It all depends on the rest of your team and your playing style.

With the EA Sports Player Performance Index updated, we here at Operation Sports are excited to announce the first winner of our signed Barclays Premier League shirt!
The player who gained the most points in our PPI contest last week was—surprise surprise—Luka Modric, who gained nine points as opposed to Juan Mata’s four and David Silva’s three. As most of you went for Mata and Silva, the hat was pretty light when we drew the lucky winner.
And so, the winner of the signed Premier League shirt, courtesy of EA Sports, is…

FIFA and PES: Like United and Liverpool, Pele and Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo and any player who won't go flying if you breathed near him; ask ten different soccer gamers and it’s likely you’ll get ten different reasons as to why they prefer one over the other. It’s funny how these things work, because there was a time when it wasn’t like this.
There was a time —gather around, kids — when the FIFA series looked like it was going to play perennial second fiddle to the Pro Evo/Winning Eleven franchise. The transformation, from being the game that made hardcore soccer fans instinctively roll their eyes upon hearing its name, has been nothing but remarkable. Who would've thought?
Make no mistake, the FIFA series was never a David to PES’ Goliath — none of EA Sports’ games will ever play that role.
It’s just that, for folks who care to remember that far back, there was a time when PES’ quality was so far ahead of FIFA 's, that we felt confident enough in proclaiming that this will always be the natural order of things. The fact that FIFA has always achieved respectable sales numbers wasn’t the point — EA’s marketing war chest will almost always guarantee that — it was the fact that PES has always been the game for the “real” fan. But that was a notion that gradually became a misconception, starting from when the first batches of Xbox 360s and PS3s hit the shelves.

While PES is busy playing catch up, this would be a good time for FIFA to extend its dominance in the virtual football world. It really is amazing how much the game has improved, starting from FIFA 08. Steady slews of improvements year after year, and boom, all of a sudden the title has become the juggernaut that it is today.

If you’d like to believe the press release, FIFA 12 outsold PES 2012 at a 25-to-1 clip. Even though I’m a little cynical of that figure myself, it’s hard not to anoint FIFA as this console generation’s footy-game king. Yes, PES still has pockets of hardcore support in various places around the world — Japan, Europe (with the notable exception of the UK) and Latin America — but the momentum is definitely on FIFA’s side. PES is looking like an army that’s ceding territory left and right as the mighty FIFA machine marches on.
Is all hope lost? Of course not.
First and most importantly, PES is still making money — which, no matter what game companies’ friendly PR departments will try to have you believe, is the most crucial aspect. And FIFA, despite what EA will have you believe, is eminently catchable and can be dethroned. And so, here are a few humble suggestions as to what the PES franchise should do if they are serious about a comeback.
