Most sports text-sims can be broken down into essentially two sections: the front-office management and the on-court management. Likewise, much of this review about Draft Day Sports: Pro Basketball 2 (DDSPB2) will discuss those two aspects of the game. The game is an amazing, if overwhelming, representation of the former. The latter, however, leaves much to be desired.

One thing I take pride in when it comes to contributing to the Operation Sports community is knowing that the OS voice is heard in the game-development community. Once again, that voice is being called upon.

The following details a couple things that can be drawn from the new survey initiative put forth by THQ regarding its Smackdown vs. Raw series.

Something Has Caught the Attention of THQ

A staple of the SvR series has been simple, bland repetitiveness. This year the company rocked the boat by adding the WWE Universe mode -- a very welcome addition that is a few tweaks away from being one of series’ all-time defining features.

How do you make a "realistic" sports game based on a sport that isn't, well, real? Yukes and THQ seem to have found an answer with WWE's Smackdown vs. Raw 2011, but the problem is they just could not quite pin it to the mat for the three count. SvR 2011 is ailed by repetitive and uninspired core gameplay that is unable to overshadow some great peripheral features of the game.

As per usual with this series, SvR 2011 takes steps back in certain areas by recycling the in-ring action. And while the new WWE Universe mode is tremendously cool, one wonders if the developers will ever entirely focus on improving what needs to be improved.

That being said, this is the biggest year-to-year improvement the series has gone through in ages.

Finally...the Smackdown vs. Raw series...HAS COME BACK...to innovating wrestling video games.

OK, obligatory Rock reference aside, this game has really one main thing going for it: the WWE Universe. This new game mode brings something fresh to the table, while the rest of the game does what every other Smackdown vs. Raw game has done over the past five years (i.e. recycle gameplay and give users a very deep create-a-wrestler mode).

Keep in mind that these are impressions based on just a couple hours of goofing around with the game. A full review will be available within the week.

The ladder match. Pyrotechnics. War Games. Hell in a Cell. The annals of wrestling history are laden with innovation and risk-taking. Many who pull off these new feats with skill are etched into the memory of wrestling fans for decades and become synonymous with the innovation. Many who try and fail are given no points for effort and are instead ridiculed until they fade away.

The same goes for wrestling video games. In anticipation of the upcoming WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2011, here are some of the greatest wrestling game innovations of all time.
